I really wish someone on the forums hadn’t made the “sir, this is a Wendy’s” joke earlier today, because this would be a good spot for it.
I’ve never really bought into the MOBA comparison. If you squint hard enough you can kind of see the inspiration in several aspects of the game, but as you point out it really isn’t a compelling case.
When people say that Overwatch is an FPS/MOBA hybrid, I always understand them to mean - Overwatch is not a standard FPS, it has aspects that draw inspiration from RPG’s. This is true. Overwatch was in some sense the PvP mode of an FPS RPG.
As some people have pointed out, “hero shooter” is the name for this genre.
Then you’re using him incorrectly in your misguided thoughts that this is a MOBA. Hammond plays well as a disruptor but to get real output out of him in the way that you would out of Winston you need to be using your guns or all Hammond does is provide free ult charge for the supports. He doesn’t have the autoaim mechanics that Winston does so to even kill one support he requires a decent level of aiming ability.
Moira is in some GOATS comps but she’s not a staple the way Brig is.
Out of the existing heroes only Brig, Mercy, Rein and Winston don’t have the level of mechanical skill required to play a normal FPS game. If I’m being generous I can add a few others but they have caveats.
Doomfist- Who still requires a small level of aiming albeit up close aim, his playstyle is also one that would be hard for casual players.
Mei- Has a decently easy to aim left click because of the range but still requires projectile aiming to virtually do anything well with her icicle.
Moira- Her aiming hitbox is gigantic, but out of spite for the amount of times that I’ve heard “mOiRa hAs tO aIm her BeAm iS LikE ZaRya” I’m official leaving her off my list.
Torb/Sym- I’d say yes in the past but not anymore. They both flat out require more mechanical aiming as Sym had her autoaim removed and emphasis has been moved away from Torb’s turret and put into his rivet gun.
Killing supports isn’t Hammond’s job. If you are trying to kill supports as a tank, you are way better off picking DVa or Winston.
You know what is his job? Creating mayhem among the enemy team with all of his CC, mobility, and personal tankyness. None of that requires his guns. Will I use them if I end up isolating somebody? Sure, but I didn’t pick Hammond to pick off targets. He can do it, but that’s no where near his specialty.
Yikes… Maybe in Bronze-gold. In the same way that Tracer and Genji can “disrupt” as flankers it’s meaningless if it’s not actually translating into actual picks.
Hammond’s gun damage is so low that it actually requires tracking similar to Tracer to confirm kills or all people are going to do is walk away or kill Hammond. You literally cannot kill many 200hp squishies on Hammond if you can’t use your guns. He’s one of the harder characters in the game to do well on actually.
I can see how just rolling and knocking people around can be fun, but those are the people similar to the hide in invis Sombra hack and teleport away players are. You think you’re doing something but in reality you’re playing a hard character and handicapping yourself and your team in the name of “utility” that’s not going to be followed up on.
Hey man, it’s just a post to discuss a common sentiment here. I’m not going to places where the discussion doesn’t belong and talking someone’s ears off
Yeah, I touched on that briefly a few posts in, then later on in the thread. It just seems strange to me that the term hero shooter crops up far less often than moba like shooter, even though hero shooter is already the name for it and is more accurate.
People say moba shooter because that’s their way of trashing high skill ceiling characters. You will always see this phrase in relation to someone complaining about something like Tracer/Widow or arguing why characters like Mercy 2.0/Brigitte aren’t overpowered. You see it often because it’s a tool that people use to try to hide that this game is a FPS, casual or otherwise.
You will almost always hear a Mercy/Moira/Brig main saying it.
First-Person Hero, 6v6 objective-based game?
I pretty much agree with what you wrote (I was just too lazy to get into detail about so many of the heroes). haha
IMO Junk and Pharah used to be more in the mechanical-lite zone until their recent tweaks too. I’d put Sym in a grey area as her kit really revolves around getting the most of her turrets, transporter, and/or left clicking a shield at point blank range (none of which requires a high level of mechanical skill). If someone players her by primary using LMB and RMB she’s going to be a trash pick.
Casual First Person Hero Shooter. ok got it.
OW is a CFPHSwSHTDS (Casual First Person Hero Shooter with Some Heroes That Don’t Shoot).
Rolls right off the tongue doesn’t it? lol
Why this isn’t on the box art, I have no idea! hahaha
Its a FPS, specifically a hero-based competive 6 v 6 fps.
Kind of disappointed, though. I was all ready to tell Genji to gank mid.
I know, I’m just giving you a hard time. All in fun.
Heres the thing. I dont think its either, but i feel like saying its both is a bit closer to what it actually is than saying its own thing lol.
Why are we still having this discussion 2-3 years down the line? Seriously.
I mean. Sure. It’s not an actual MOBA. No doubt. But I mean, they called it that to begin with. Maybe they had visions to introduce a PvPvE game mode to lean in to that but scrapped the idea. (Although if they had large maps with A.I, like an actual MOBA, I would be very interested in trying that).
But yeah. It’s not a MOBA. Not really. This was pretty much clarified long ago.
How many hours do you have on the game again?
It irks me to no end when people claim it is a MOBA (or even a MOBA hybrid). It’s not even close to a MOBA. It doesn’t even make sense that people make this comparison. It’s its own genre, but if anything it is more closely related to an Arena Shooter than anything else (though I would say that label doesn’t quite fit either). We need to stop with the MOBA comparisons.
I don’t believe OW to be a MOBA but rather it derived from MOBAs, like the metal music genre derived from rock, it’s quite a difference between the Beatles “Hey Jude” and let’s say Judas Priest “Pain Killer”. It’s in own genre but derived from another.
