As controversial as this can be sound. It’s a videogame, what should matter is your ability to play as teammate.
Not your sex, gender, color, region, physical differences, psicological differences or pachimari tastes.
The moment that you open space for that kind of “differentiation” is the moment you open space for toxicity. Due folks being different and have different experiences and views about the world.
That’s why I always was against several kind of stances about anything aside the gameplay in games that wouldn’t matter to play well or not. While lore should have everything about inclusion due it’s world context, the game itself simply ignores it althogether due putting villains and heroes in the same team.
Maybe on PvE on lore related they could had achieved something related to it. Although I don’t actually remember anything about it on PvE related either.
Any kind of theme that isn’t needed for the game actually function shouldn’t be present in the game itself. Folks are different and view the world in a different manner, expect to folks agree in a videogame when we cant’t agree on mostly anything in life is simply utopic, instead of creating cracks to give toxicity space you shouldn’t touch it to begin with on things that work without it, Lore itself is irrelevant to pvp portion, but not to have a link or simpathy or connection with it’s characters outside of it.
The game works without it so, in that regard shouldn’t be in there. While on lore if they want should be present. Folks are passionate and also play games for fun and escapism.
I would rather have several comics and shorts related to several important themes with their animation quality than actually spend time talking with anyone about stuff that we cant’t agree due our lives experiences are different.
Could help to actually reduce the toxicity using their media for it, instead of “putting stuff in the game to meet quota or simply by pressure”. By organically educate that folks are different and have their own backgrounds and experiences, an icon or skin or name will not do that, all 3 we have examples of toxicity being directed towards it icons(flags, more than one), skin(at least one hero), name(at least one hero).

It’s not an opinion though. Well it is, but it isn’t one that is tolerated and nor should it be. Would you defend racism with “its their opinion”? Or sexism? No.
It’s no different. There is simply a right opinion and a wrong opinion, and if you have the wrong opinion you deserve to be silenced because there is absolutely no room for hate in this world when it comes to race, sexual orientation and gender.
