I believe they are paid for their labor. I also believe that if I look at your picture and draw something similar to it because I was trying to do that, you should not get money for it.
Like someone else’s earlier example, if you draw a dragon, and then I draw a dragon, you should not get money for my dragon.
I don’t know who the first person to draw a dragon was, but imagine if every single person afterwards that drew a dragon had to pay them
If I may get your opinion here – why is it that you think having consciousness is relevant?
This is the root of many unanswered philosophical debates about how our brains work and what consciousness is, and as far as many people are concerned, your brain is nothing more than a biological computer doing exactly what these machines are doing (on a much grander scale), and that consciousness is just an illusion.
You just told me that you think people shouldn’t be paid for readily available knowledge… all knowledge is readily available via the internet.
Knowledge is made available through the labour of others. It doesn’t magically mainifest out of nowhere.
By that logic: no one should be paid for their work. Which I’m sure you’re not suggesting, because that would be insane.
If you both drew a dragon and then a billion dollar industry stole both pieces AND every drawing of a dragon ever made to put an artist out of work for an imitation of a drawing of a dragon: and then went on charging their customers the same price for that drawing as if it were made by a human being over many hours…
You’d have cause to be a little miffed, yes.
Such legal recourse would protect consumers as well as artists. You don’t want to be paying the same prices for something that an AI spat out in five minutes as something that took an artist months to work on.
At the moment there is nothing stopping companies doing that. I’m saying there needs to be massive changes to current law to accommodate these changes.
At the same time though, if you came up with a super cool drawing and other humans saw it and imitated it, would you also not be miffed? It’s just odd that because it’s a machine, THAT seems to be what you are mad about.
Why not?
Are you saying that a car assembled on an assembly line should cost less than a car assembled by a human because it took the machine less time to make it? Does that make sense to you? (actually, it does, but isn’t that good?)
I disagree. I think change is good, and I think tools that make things happen faster are also good things. Whether it is in art, or coding, or farming.
You seem to think I’m angry at AI… I’m not. I’m angry at companies being sheisty and conning their workers out of their earnings.
The car assembly lines are worked by manual labourers and engineers. Someone has to make sure the machines do not break down.
People mining the raw resources to make the parts for the cars are being paid for their labour too.
People making the ‘raw resources’ to be used in AI are not being paid for their labour in this case. It’s just some people have it in mind that artists shouldn’t be paid for the work they do. But you’re sure as hell not going to see the savings they’re making.
Are you telling me an AI made skin costing just as much as a human designed one wouldn’t get under your skin at all?
So, do you just know nothing about how AI works? Or computers? lol. Have you ever heard of Nvidia?
I’m growing weary of this conversation. It was nice talking to you. I DO suggest if you want to learn more about AI and how it works, you do some research though.
And to this, no, it would not, at all. Not any more than a car made on an assembly line costing the same as a car made by a human only. If it’s a quality product, it’s a quality product.
nope, no idea where you got that, but you seem to think car production lines do.
Everything, but it doesnt fit with whatever point you’re trying to make so you’re glossing over it and pretending it doesn’t mean anything.
You seem to think making me out to be an anti-tech ‘fire bad’ kinda person makes what you’re saying have more merit. But it just shows a total lack of empathy on your part for the people AI is currently screwing over without it being properly governed by law.
But again why should we as customers of Overwatch care when the general consensus is these “artist” charge absurd prices for a product They make once? I’m not gonna care if AI replaces skin cosmetic artists. Because the gaming industry has done more than enough to prove they do not respect the customer in the slightest. Normal artist can’t be replaced by AI. But the cosmetic artists can easily be replaced with AI and may benefit the customer more long term.
Because thats our livelyhood our soul our work and how we inspire.
AI takes everything and gives nothing back I am sorry but if you feel. The bigest thing about ai art is that its never nuanced and ALWAYS derivative. Over time this just creates the copy machine generator that never really captivates anyone its just the same sh!t different strat. Anyone who thinks artist charge way too much is obviously not one themselves as they dont really understand the struggle most artists have to deal with when trying to replicate what they are asked to do while at the same time trying to keep it as original as possible. As more and more corporate overhead gets involved a lot of that mentality gets stripped away and you end up with mediocre and bland work that may look clean and precise but it often times just feels empty. Thats the biggest problem with ai art it all feels empty as there is not really a touch of human in it.
I hope you all realize if your advocating for this idea at all you will get faster content but in the end you will never quite like feel it has that same soul but too each their own I guess. Sometimes in life the best way to teach a kid how bad something is…is to let them just get burnt and hope that once they’ve learned the hard way they will not repeat it in the future. Thats how everyone will feel about ai art when this stuff starts happening I can guarantee it
Its not like your required to buy skins in order to enjoy the game how are we screwing you over do you say the same thing about the films you watch or the music you listen to?
you do make a good point but it just applies to artists.
Buuuut TBH it should apply more i reckon to actually get people to do 1 good thing. If you can’t help someone up when they fall over or open a door then thats when the whole value of people drops.
As i said, you don’t have to do much as long as something is done. Just one thing for the good of everyone i reckon…
.
Although the grift part is actually right as well. people will exploit kindness and you might be surprised by this but…
I as a customer have actually been exploited by artists before. I have frequently supported people for years on patreon and stuff and i didn’t even get a thanks after nearly 16 donations in too many cases. Sure it’s only like 10 bucks a month but it still hurts because it was the long term support that mattered. imagine 16 months of your life supporting people and no thanks for it.
I know it isn’t something huge but when you do something good you can at least hope for a thanks eventually but it never came in so many cases. Thats why i say people should earn it because some of us did earn it. Well, just a thank you and maybe a slap in the face hahahah but you get the idea.
Thats my own shoes anyways so you can see why i said what i said and i appreciate hearing your perspective too.
but from my own, i see AI as essential. TBH without competition artists could trod and trample on customers and sure we can go to the next guy but i feel like the majority of artists have kinda become buttholes.
I know i sound rude but with my post above, what happens when we support people for ages and don’t get a thank you? Do we just tolerate it and move onto the next guy who may do the same or do we break the cycle and see AI as our salvation…?
People can be rude and AI is so kindhearted it’s a fault of it’s own. but a good fault that helps people.
Even if we loose in the end i’d rather loose and be happy then live and be bitter from never being thanked for our support. I know we can’t do much but it adds up you know. If it keeps adding up it just hurts when we never get a reward. Even something as simple as a thanks or something for everyone to benefit.
AI slop has no place in an honest game. If Overwatch ever turned to it for marketing or skins or voicelines or anything like that, I’d quit. AI is bad news and steals from artists like you said
That is truly awful. I’m so sorry you’ve had that experience.
I don’t want to be seen as someone who says ‘artists good, AI bad’. AI is amazing as a tool and has the power to do great things. I just think it needs to be better regulated for all.
I watched a wonderful documentary on AI copyright and how it is being used currently AND how it might be better used in the future. It was really formative in informing my views on how we should better regulate the technology going forward. It covers both the good and the bad.
I found the concept of ‘data laundering’ particularly worrying. But really enjoyed the ideas put forward on how to combat it.
