"Blizzard has created a new generative AI tool called ‘Blizzard Diffusion’ that can produce concept art for new projects.
The studio’s chief design officer, Allen Adham, told employees about Blizzard Diffusion in an email [seen by The New York Times], and said it places the company “on the brink of a major evolution in how we build and manage our games.”
The email said that Blizzard Diffusion can help create concept art for game environments, characters, and cosmetics. It also suggested that Blizzard is interested in exploring how AI might help it create “autonomous, intelligent, in-game NPCS” and be used to assist with procedural level design, game coding, voice cloning, and its anti-toxicity efforts."

If you plan on only playing games that don’t use AI, you need to grow up and get over it. Because if that is your stance, there will be no games left for you to play, soon enough.
Basically ALL AI models are trained upon existing data, so it’s essentially stealing from everything. You’d especially know this as a programmer trying to use AI for solving a problem that very few people have solved before
Even humans are trained on existing data, I wish AI was allowed to gather information without all these companies denying the AI data that could benefit the whole world.
This whole idea that AI is stealing information is going to set us back decades when we could have massive AI gains today if it wasn’t for it.
You can’t deny Venture’s reveal, Soldier 76’s reveal, and the support for the LGBTQ+ community has helped Overwatch stay relevant. It was just the first thing that came to mind to draw more attention to the game. Surely some people picked up Overwatch after those reveals. As you said, players play heroes with personalities that match their interest. And while the LGBTQ+ community is not a majority, it is still a good portion.
Yes, but it wouldn’t be bigger than if a regular character was introduced.
All I remember from Venture being transgender are people getting upset over it. I don’t understand the point, especially when the VA’s origin is not even accepting of the LGBTQ community.
My point is, being an LGBTQ hero doesn’t inherently make it any more appealing, you’re treating it like a marketing gimmick.
I think it’s silly to say this alone kept the entire game alive, that’s just misattribution. Updates and skins are what seem to keep the players going
It is. Compare OW2 skins quality to the quality of skins from OW1 and it’s as plain as day. The only skins that come even remotely close to that quality are the ones that are primarily bought with real money.
The way they are doing it is the greediest and least consumer friendly way possible. They pick the color palettes and they charge it for nearly, if not, the exact same price as the original. They don’t even allow you to mix and match the colors they give you, nor invert the color palettes in case you want a specific color to be more dominant than the default color.
That’s unrelated to skins. Even then, they’re using most of those things from OW1, while the rest are severe downgrades from OW1.
That’s all I needed to hear. That skin is straight up a spit in the face to any fans of Reaper. It’s repurposed garbage slapped together with a single set of armor and 3 near-identical masks. It not only doesn’t fit the character, but it’s the polar opposite of what Reaper is.
If you think that’s a good skin, then I don’t trust that you have a good grasp at what quality is.
If you are talking about Venture’s VA you are just straight up lying. They are literally nonbinary. I follow Valeria on Twitter and they are a huge advocate for LGBTQ+ rights and is very active in the community. Also, literally every character is a marketing gimmick at the end of the day. I’m just saying that more diversity would attract more players to the game. You clearly aren’t in the LGBTQ+ community, we adore Venture and Valeria.
they shoudlnt be stealing art from others its disgusting and honestly i think the tech needs to be banned or even further more limited than it is currently
World of Warcraft’s team has already said that they have no plans on using gen AI for art and prefer using AI that makes devs’ lives easier on the coding end (aka non-gen AI). I’d imagine Overwatch’s team probably has a similar stance.
They’re already using. Generative AI is as good as an average artist, but costs way less.
Speeds up the process, but it’s skill is from average one. While AI tools speeds up the process for capable hands, also can deliver what an average professional can do.
Their art on menus and heroes, are already using it.
Whatever stance you have about the theme, they’re using it. Surprises me that folks didn’t realized even after them going full throttle towards it a few years ago.
Yes Ai is good at repetitive tasks… Producing the same thing over and over again, such as creating thousands of identical components for an industry.
Art is not a repetitive task. Every piece of art is different and unique, all requiring inspiration that cannot be replicated by an AI.
That is why art should be held to a different standard than factory automation. Ai copies and follows a program that has to be created by a human in the first place so it cannot experiment or be inspired to create.
It is the very definition of stagnation, not progress.
Or you know… Just hire artists and pay them a fair wage for the work they do! so much more economical than hiring an artist to have to teach an AI and then hiring someone else to fix the garbage the AI spits out so it doesn’t give someone extra limbs or glasses for no reason.
Companies are pushing AI because they are greedy and short sighted so they will always chose the option that nets them the largest bonus in the short term and AI has a lower cost to implement at first.
The issue that will be found overtime is that one AI model will become the industry standard everyone will use the same one and eventually everything will start to look like the same bland and generic style.
Then what does a company have to offer a customer that cannot be found elsewhere.
