Not sure if anybody else has seen this, but I saw a rumor saying that OW 2 won’t have as much graphical detail because they are designing it with mobile compatibility in mind. While I don’t like the idea of playing OW 2 with/against mobile phone users, I do think this will help the Switch’s overall performance.
I wouldn’t throw out hope just yet. Having 2 less Players in the game means less visual effects the switch has to render. So potentially OW2/OW1 should run smoother if optimization is done properly.
Yeah, that’s true. As you said though, that’s if they optimize it correctly. I’ve honestly lost all faith in them as they haven’t even tried to fix the switch version since we got those fps drop issues back in March. Before then, it used to run pretty well, but not anymore.
Sigh can’t believe I started this just by making a Reddit post to show why I prefer torbs new gun and it being the reason I’m getting torbs gold gun next
I actually saw those images which I’m sure is where that website I linked got them. From looking at those images the designs for OW 2 do look simpler, but not so much that it looks like a graphical downgrade like what the rumor suggests.
Minimalist designs are actually extremely challenging to pull off well. Complex character designs are easier to do well as even if some elements are hideous, the rest of the elements will carry them regardless.
For minimalist designs, since so few elements are used, even a single element that’s out of place will ruin everything. You can’t hide your mistakes in the crowd so to speak.
Torb’s hammer needs to be redesigned, people should see futuristic + an adjacent relatable attribute. OW1 Torb’s weapons and hammer looked futuristic but very analog/non-digital. OW2’s Torb Gun is satisfactory, but his hammer looks like a Lego piece.
This goes for a lot of things in life. In baking, 4 ingredient Macarons are very hard to master as it requires lots of technique and patience. A 20 ingredient over-the-top cake is easier to bake as even if you screw up 5 of the ingredients, the cake will still be fabulous.
Screw up one ingredient in the Macarons, and nothing will hide your mistake.
Easier/lowered visual quality is a design choice to make a game easier to port onto multiple platforms.
Nintendo Switch could run Wolfenstein 2 New Order but unlike the higher processors of Sony and Xbox certain tricks were utilized to make it functional without crashing the Switch. Things like added environmental details that limit player view of the horizon so they wouldn’t need to render so many details, slower elevators allowing loading to complete and of course, downgrading visuals.
If Ow2 is going for simpler design, then they are focused on higher performance on multiple platforms.
They shouldn’t have to. It’s much easier to hit 120+ FPS with 10 human players vs 12 human players. You can test that out in a 5v5 custom game (all humans, A.I take less resources oddly enough).
I remember hitting 120+ fps with my old amd 460 GPU, and ram in 5v5 but averaging 105fps in a typical 6v6 game.
During archives missions I could hit 120+fps on medium with that dusty GPU.
I don’t think graphics need to be dropped at all, and just a little bit for the switch (just get rid of stupid fog and shadow + light dynamics)
I’m just hoping OW 2 on Switch looks and feels good to play. As I have said more times than I can count, OW 1 on Switch looks decent (not as good as it could look, but not exactly terrible) and, thanks to Patchimari, it runs like hot garbage.
Thank you! I’ve been saying Blizzard should do this since most of us Switch players figured out the particle effects (and anything related to it like what you suggested) should be toned down or removed since the Switch obviously can’t handle it.
Not to mention the lower resolution makes those details hard to notice. Actually on PC 1080p, it’s very hard to tell the difference between medium and ultra. One exception is effects, because medium and ultra effects has the same quality, but ultra just adds a billion more pointless particles and turns Winston into a glowing sun.
Secondly, I played on PC and I remember it looking much better than the Switch version. I might have had my settings at medium or slightly higher as I play on my Lenovo Gaming Laptop so those settings can’t be too high. I would have to see what my settings on it were though because it’s been a while since I played on PC and I remember making the comment of how good it looked compared to Switch (which isn’t a huge feat to accomplish).
Edit: Just remembered that OW on Switch doesn’t even run at 1080p, it runs at 900p while docked and 720p undocked so that’s why a PC at 1080p looks so much better.
From what’s been shown, nothing (except some particle effects) suggests that.
Shadows are higher quality, I doubt the new models are gonna be less detailed regarding polygon counts, Baps new look suggests that if you look closely to at his arms as they are less edgy. Lighting also appears to be more detailed on materials.
Off topic but I doubt overwatch on mobile is gonna be the same game, since I don’t think it’s fast paced nature is gonna be a good experience on mobile.
the only plausible downgrade is for switch, while for mobile … I think that after the bad reception for Immortal blizzard would not dare to try this approach again. on the contrary, perhaps it would propose spin-offs for Ow, just like Hearthstone is for WoW or Shelter for the Fallout franchise.
Finally, I would like to underline that whoever has commented on the graphic quality of torbjorn’s game models … does not understand anything about 3D modeling and does not know the concept of artistic evolution at all. in the simpler polygons of those skins it is forgotten that the previous skins will still exist in OW2, and it makes more sense to compare with those. oops, we have conveniently made the comparison with a cleaner design that indicates the evolution of the character on new technology e new style of OW2 world. and the fake news is served.
I mean, Blizzard did force an esport for OW even though they just tried that with Heroes of the Storm and failed. If the first example wasn’t a good indication of them trying things people already showed they didn’t like, the devs tried to put in the same exact Cassidy mid-air roll buff 3-4 times before the patch we just got even though nobody liked the change every time it was tested. So yes, I believe Blizzard would try to make OW on mobile like the OW we have now just like they did with Diablo Immortal because it seems like they have yet to learn from their mistakes, but that’s just my opinion.
If they’re really downgrading the graphics then why is mercy’s ow2 design have way more detail and polish than her original one? And why do her beams have significantly better animations?
That article only provided 1 example, that being torb… the fact they only listed 1 example is enough to tell you it’s just not true lmao…
Look at widow. Her original design could literally be spray painted on her body and you wouldnt know, but her ow2 design has alot of details and her gun is more complex.
