The more I think about the issues with smurfing & new accounts that play with hacks, I don’t think there is any better solution than this, in a F2P game.
Those people can spend all the money they want in getting & wasting time setting up new Phone Numbers, on top of that, they will have to grind new heroes with Challenges, if they missed the respective seasons that instantly unlocks them with the Premium Battle Pass.
I mean q times are a problem for years now? And game is changed to deal with them?
At the same time they add changes that make q times worse.
It is funny stuff to see them trying to fix this problem and make it worse at the same time, before it was just them fixing one problem by creating other one, this is next lvl XD
Locking comp is as great as separate q someone mentioned.
I mean it will be fun to see people buy pass for access and wait a lot, but i doubt its what devs really want to see… my expectations is they will have to give up on locking comp next pass, because it basicially might turn it to waiting symulator for paying customers, i dont think they pay for that experience…
Just lock hero for two weeks in comp for everyone, thats all.
This doesn’t address that at all. There are max level players that play comp all day and still suck at it. There are players who play 10 hours a week in masters/GM.
This is a monetization tactic and nothing more.

Yes, this is a solution to a problem that they created.
Two weeks with no comp at the start of each season is going to be horrible.
There is a reason why they changed it from two weeks to two days after Season 4.
This is just an unnecessary solution, to an unnecessary problem that they designed. And a middle finger to comp players.
Anyone with two brain cells would complain about this.
And imagine trying to be a new player after two/three years of locked new characters piling up…
I hate people who come back from a 3+ year break and immediately queue competitive just to ruin the game for everyone as much as everyone else does, but limiting competitive mode is a terrible decision. There are just some players, including myself, who can not stand playing another other mode other than competitive and the mode being locked would just make people like me not want to play the game.
Well, at least comp will actually have some barriers.
You want to play genuinely, you put in the hours for it.

They’re are nerfing quickplay as the grinding place for people to unlock heroes.
I only play quickplay. So far I am not liking what I see.

That’s not what this does. You can play a lot and still troll a comp match. People do it all the time.
Oddly enough it’s usually the low level “smurfs” who sweat and try to win while you are more likely to see a high level player get mad and throw.
Eh, at least it forces people to put more time into other accounts even if it is just a burner. No real way to stop trolling but at least it puts a deterrent, between the phone requirements and this, it’s still a lot better than nothing.
It isn’t better than nothing, nothing would be significantly better.

That’s a recipe for disaster.
I don’t see how having nothing is worse than having heroes locked behind a battlepass.
The anti-smurfing element is an interesting angle but if this is going to be the solution, I’d much rather Comp be gated behind something like “get X number of wins in any of the modes in Unranked per season per account” than “you don’t get to play any of the new characters until you complete enough daily chores or cough up the dough”.
Heroes are still unlockable via other free ways.
I really wanna say this has to be fake because they’d do anything to keep queues as efficient as possible… but in light of this most recent reveal, I’m terrified to think it might be real

Overwatch is built around mirroring and countering compositions. If you are locked from changing to a character that can mirror or counter, then you have lost part of what makes the game competitive. The change is anti-competitive no matter how you can unlock characters.
