New Hero Mechanics & “Alternative” Gameplay Experiences

These are fan-made hero concepts meant as ideas to explore rather than finished or fully balanced hero proposals.

The numbers and abilities have mostly been tested “in my head” so far, because apparently my brain is the only QA department I can afford. They would obviously need a lot of in-game testing and balancing, or could simply be used as inspiration for completely different ideas.

What I’m mainly interested in is whether the underlying mechanics and gameplay loops could bring something new or interesting to Overwatch.

One of the main ideas behind these concepts is easy to pick up, but hard to master. The heroes should be accessible enough that casual players can have fun with them without needing to understand every interaction, while still having enough depth for experienced players to discover new ways of using their abilities.

Ideally, I’d like a hero to have abilities that seem straightforward at first, but where a really good player can eventually find combinations, interactions or uses that nobody originally expected. Basically, something that is easy to understand but has a high skill ceiling.

I’m therefore less interested in whether every number is perfectly balanced right now, and more interested in whether the mechanics themselves could create interesting gameplay, decision-making and moments that feel unique to Overwatch.

I’d love to hear what you think about the concepts and mechanics themselves.

A few questions for anyone who took the time to read through the concepts:

1. Which hero would you personally like to play the most?

2. If you ignore abilities, numbers and balance for a moment, which core mechanic sounds the most interesting to you?

3. Which hero do you think would have the biggest impact on today’s Overwatch?

4. How would you personally play them?

5. What hero combinations, ability combos or ultimate combos do you think could emerge?

6. Which hero do you think casual players would enjoy the most?

7. Which hero do you think would become the strongest in high-level or professional play?

One of my goals was to create heroes that are easy to understand but difficult to master.

I’m less interested in exact balance numbers right now (thats the devs problem  ) and more interested in how these mechanics could affect gameplay, team compositions, decision-making and player creativity.

I’d love to hear your thoughts.

Very interesting hero concepts. I like your ideas for abilities and would look forward to the OW devs implementing them!

Thanks for the reply, really appreciate you taking the time to read through it, i know it’s alot!

I’d still love to hear more thoughts on the actual mechanics themselves though, since that’s the part I’m most curious about, how these systems might play out, not just whether the abilities sound cool.

My personal favorites out of the bunch are Sanguis and Umbra:

Sanguis - Support. The whole kit revolves around resource management: sacrificing your own health pool to heal, dont heal and have more hp, then having to fight aggressively to earn it the corrupted health back. Positioning and timing become just as important as healing output.

Umbra - Damage. Lower raw damage than most DPS heroes, but the whole kit is about disrupting enemy awareness, obscuring who’s who, denying visual information, and forcing the enemy team to lean harder on communication and coordination to function.

How many hours did you spend on this?

If you want I could try recreating these with the workshop if I have time.

Anyway good post. (nobody checks workshop discussion topic.)

Thanks LILO!

I’d rather not say how many hours because honestly, I don’t know :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes: But let’s just say it was a fair amount of time and leave it at that

I don’t have any experience with Workshop, and I actually didn’t even know you could do things like this with it.

I’d definitely be interested in seeing if some of these mechanics could actually work in Overwatch. It would be pretty cool to see them in action, so go ahead!

Google AI is a decently good guide for me. ^^
