Never understood the hate behind, 'Shooting Star'

In my opinion, they did a good job figuring out what D.Va’s serious side would be like, but they didn’t depict her bright, quippy outer layer very well. That’s why she didn’t come off as a deep character in Shooting Star: she needs both.

Also I would LOVE to have her hair in that bun but in a skin

Except you’re comparing someone who literally has pages of lore to someone who just managed to scratch an 8 minute cinematic.

Also D.VA literally shows in the cinematic that she DOESNT have a hero complex - she’s not rushing into action because she needs to be the one to save the day. She’s rushing because it’s a matter of minutes if not seconds before it’s too late. She also shows growth in the cinematic as it’s alluded that she excessively puts responsibility in her hands and needs to recognise that she can’t always do things by herself.

We aren’t given much when it comes to D.VA, but from the looks of it, she’s constantly focused on the what ifs and keeping South Korea safe at any risk possible. PTSD or any mental disorder literally can come in any form, mild, severe or moderate. Whilst my commentary on what she is may not be valid, I think immediately shutting off the idea that she might be suffering isn’t valid either because we aren’t given enough materials to be able to make a full on conclusion.

But I, personally, do think that D.VA suffers from some form of PTSD, which is why she repetitively pushes herself out to try to eliminate any danger so that whatever happened DOESNT repeat itself

It’s not bad but it’s nothing compared to the others.

It was good just the weakest of the lot so far.

I like it, it’s great as a solo short, but when you consider all shorts together, it’s not doing as much

It does not affect anything else in the OW universe really, Dva and the meka squad are in their little self-contained bubble outside of the lore

I also felt like they tried to set it up as “the hero must learn a lesson and pay the price” like Rein learning a lesson for being too headstrong and wreckless and losing an eye/his mentor

But all Dva lost for being too stubborn to accept help was…? A hurt leg, that is now fine? idk it just didnt have the same emotional impact to me as the others

She died, and had to wait to respawn, giving the other team more time on the objective.

D.Va: The rest of the squad - the country - they’re all counting on me. If I make a mistake and the gwishin get through us, we lose everything.

She feels like it’s her responsibility to stop them. Not MEKA, not her squad, her. I’m not saying her need to save everyone isn’t justified, but she puts the entire burden on herself rather than recognizing that she is part of a team. This is said before the gwishin show up on the radar.

Based on what little we’ve seen, she hasn’t exhibited enough symptoms. I would rather make judgements based on what we’ve seen rather than make assumptions about what we haven’t seen.

I like that we got to see D.Va in action, the introduction of … I wont even try to spell his name but I really liked him as a character and see the Gwinshin.
But compared to some of the other cinematic… It doesn’t hold up
A lot of the other shorts add to the lore or felt out emotions for the heroes
But this one didn’t do a lot of both.
Don’t get me wrong, it’s a decent story and the animation is awesome but compared to “Honor and Glory”, “Last bastion” or “Infiltration”… This one falls a little flat

If it only focused more on the deep parts. The PTSD was hinted at for like 5 seconds then D.Va was back to her happy go lucky state even while she blew up her MEKA to kill the remaining omnics. It just had too much contrast and nothing in between.

Except this matters contextually. Her MEKA squad isn’t actually present in the base for whatever reason - I have no idea if they’re sleeping - if they are still recovering from whatever happened. But they’re not present and the attack was happening in the moment.

From what we see, she’s the only active member currently because whatever happened, she came out the cleanest out of the incident. Which is why prior to the attack, she is insistent on making her mech be in 100% condition.

I think this would be different if her squad was there, but there absence has some significance in the story.

The context to these is really important more so than anything else.

But you can’t make comparisons then. We’ve seen little of DVA or her lore to even understand why there seems to be an absence of her squad.

Yet to be comparing her presentation to someone, who had a full in depth story written about them.

The cinematic implies that they are either recovering from injury or were wiped out by the last invasion which is why she has to do it alone and not with her squad. Wrong or right that was the feeling I got where the weight of that responsibility was on her shoulders and she faced it head on, not as D’Va, not as a Member of the MEKA squad but as Hana Song and a citizen of the country she obviously cares for.

Does it though? I got the impression they were out doing interviews/public appearances and DVa just hung back to work with her bro rather than head to party town. Which is the smarter/more responsible decision since you always keep a guard on duty. During the fight they mention backup not arriving in time which I interpreted as a reference to the rest of her mech squad given the implication that by and large things that are not mechs can’t handle the bots.

It didn’t showcase any of D.va’s personality, only Hana Song, with it somewhat implying that Hana actually doesn’t like her D.va persona that much. Or at least not all the frivolous things she has to do while presenting herself as D.va to the world. Would have liked to see a little of D.va in Hana. Also it didn’t really tell us much new.

That said, I think it’s still a fun short and I still like it. It’s just not my favorite.

Its an amazing animation dont get me wrong

But it didnt add anything to the story, except for a guy who we might not see again, and a new omnic(?)

I like Shooting Star. I wouldn’t call it one of my favourites but it’s definitely not my least.

The one thing that kind of does irk me about it though is it feels a little detached from the game. That’s not the short’s fault. We get to see the REAL Hana in Shooting Star but we never really get to see that side of her in game. I know there’s a reason for that but it feels like there’s a disconnect between Shooting Star D.Va and game D.Va because the game hasn’t gone out of its way to properly bridge that gap.
It doesn’t even have to be anything major either. Maybe D.Va offers to explain how her mech works to Orisa because Efi’s interested? Perhaps even just one of the other characters acknowledging D.Va burden must weigh on her. Just SOMETHING. Busan existing isn’t enough.
Hopefully Overwatch 2 will be able to alleviate this once D.Va gets her screen-time but, as of right now, that’s my biggest qualm with the short.

It was good, but the others are great. When you set up a series of great shorts and one is mediocre it really shows

Kinda hurts since I prefer character focused stories (like The Last Bastion) but this one just didn’t hit the mark for me
