I didn’t really find the info, I just saw multiple players saying “your hero being meta is the worst thing that can happen to him/her”. Also certain players specifically saying “I don’t want my hero to be meta I just want him/her to be a little bit better” myself included. I know what’s gonna happen if doom instantly becomes meta, he’s gonna get reverted or nerfed into the ground thanks to complaints and I’d rather have a slightly better version of doom for a long period of time over a godlike version of doom for 2 months.
It’s pretty much common sense at this point - hero becoming meta = nerfs below ground afterwards.
Yeh exactly.

Ok, well, i’m a game dev, so i’m gonna approach if from another angle.
If, as a dev, i see a hero is getting picked all the time, i’m start wondering why. They’re at the top of my list, so i look at all the data and try to figure out what the problem is, so i might want to fiddle with some numbers to get other heroes played more.
Also, i want the game to be changing and fresh all the time, so i’ll actually WANT to change the meta a little so people dont get bored with it.
But yeah, i definitely see the pain of meta and nerfs, but from a view from above, i understand why its good.
So you don’t want people to ever get comfortable with your game?
Changing meta is like someone would swap keys on my keyboard from time to time, so I am not too comfortable with typing without looking.
Meta? Meta Skylar? I AM THE META.
Not 100% no - you need a little change all the time to keep things fresh for the long term players. Its impossible to perfectly balance a game, but at least you can keep it interesting ![]()
Well, that desire is why I don’t stay with any of new games.
It’s not interesting, it’s just stupid.
Why you master game? To actually enjoy it afterwards, without doing “newbie mistakes” and messing up.
Nah hes right. Metas have to change. Imagine watching OWL for the least 5 years with no meta changes. I’m not saying characters have to be made bad or good on purpose. But balance changes have to happen. This game is impossible to balance for EVERYONE. There’s a million things going on at once.
Can’t imagine it, as only reason I ever opened OWL streams was for tokens.
Ok, well, that’s how competitive games work. Staleness breeds non-playability. Perfect balance doesn’t exist in FPS games outside of Halo 2. There is 1000x to many variables in this game to make it truly balanced.
I’d become bored of the same meta for 4 years.
Which is why you make it fun first. You can turn blind eye to balance issues, if game is fun.
I’d become bored of the same meta for 4 years.
Winning and fun are mutually exclusive in Overwatch. If you want to have fun, you would want to pick non-meta heroes.
But… It is fun? I don’t do things for 5 years unless they are fun, or mandatory.
Sme, I never want Ana/Zen to be meta defining for diff reasons
Ana : Crying mercy mains (aNa iS uNBaLanCeD), Hitscan dominance, devs will nerf her burst to level of bap, and I will be focused more in ranked
Zen : Tanks getting melted overly often (Im flex, I play tank too), dps players saying that he counters their ults and nerfs to his already low healing and the fact that hes vulnerable as hell without a good mercy/brig
I wish it was. Compared to TF2, Overwatch turned out to be completely devoid of fun.
Yet you are here on the forums, 5 years after it’s release… If you’re not having fun why are you torturing yourself? lol.
It still can be recovered. If only Blizzard would finally grasp, that tank/support kind of fun often doesn’t revolve around “pew-pew” stuff.
Its even more ironic that Dva was the least important character in goats. Zarya and Brig were the most important followed by Rein, Lucio then Zen or dva. And even in OWL dva was sometimes swapped for sombra
It’s a team based FPS game. Do you mean recovered in the normal sense of recovery? Or make it like you want it to be?
I don’t understand. Overall I feel like the game is pretty balanced according to what it’s supposed to be… There are problem characters sometimes but the game itself works very well… If it didn’t none of us would be here.
It’s the team based aspect that trips most people up. Nearly all characters can be played exactly how they are intended… If the team synergises. But if they don’t? Thennnnn this game isn’t for those people
Unless they play with friends obviously.
