It’s actually painful how literally perfect you have to be on some of them though coughzenyattacough
Agreed! I want to see a lot more Zen because playing as him, with him AND against him is loads more fun than any meta I’ve seen in a while.
He’s only “fun” to play against because the dude is easy to steam roll over. And he’s been a strong pick since his buffs in the early 2 seasons if not directly involved in half the bigger metas. Everyone is punished for mistakes and nobody plays perfectly, if you’re playing perfectly it means your scripting and playing like a bot. And that’s really no fun since mistake are just generally part of life a whole and the best way to learn in the first place.
So what you’re telling me is that if I play better than I did pre-GOATs and I get my bum kicked through the apartment roof and out of the atmosphere, that I have to learn from that when I’m 19/3 and I still manage to lose?
Wow.
metagame comes from META
metagame is when the MOST EFFECTIVE TACTICS AVAILABLE shape how the game is played
its still derived form the OG META meaning
No darling, metagame is the prefix meta + game, meaning game about the game, there is no “OG META meaning”, it all comes from metagame which is a word formed by the prefix, with no acronym whatsoever.
Which is a refrence to the 1960s game theory, that has absolutely nothing to do with the implication of meta in the since of “metaplay” because it has literally nothing to do with video games.
meta gaming and meta play are entirely different
Meta gaming refers to transcending prescribed rules to solve a problem. It was made popular by the nuclear arms race, and to try and apply that term to gaming is not only disingenuous its asinine, because there is no problem being solved
METAplay is a refrence to using the most effective tactics available to win a game.
The transgression to metagaming from that is just a colloquialism, and has nothing to do with the actual term metagame at all.
If you’re going 19-3 and still lose then you can still improve by playing the objective which people seem to forget to do. Your K/Da does not matter simply since elims can be gained by just doing even the smallest amount of damage and if the target dies within a period you gain an elim.
I can end a game with 28k healing, 4 mins objective time total, and 12k damage and still lose. Not much that can be done about it other than hope for the best next game, if you maintain a positive winrate you should be able to climb pretty steadily but Overwatch ranked is I’d say much more frustrating than most other games due to the lack of objective play and people getting their mind wrapped around kills instead of team play.
It has everything to do with metagame. Games before video games had meta, they are the same concept applied to different things.
Metagame analysis was developed in the 60s about the arms race but the term was not coined then. It was based of game theory which goes back to Neumann’s work and it was about games, same as it is with eletronic games.
which literally proves my point that the term “metagame” moving to mean the same thing as “metaplay” is just colloquialism as I just said.
If your have to use the statement:
it literally means the meaning you are trying to apply to it is a colloquialism and not the actual meaning.
More specifically…
Metagaming is a term used in role-playing games, which describes a player’s use of real-life knowledge concerning the state of the game to determine their character’s actions, when said character has no relevant knowledge or awareness under the circumstances. This can refer to plot information in the game such as secrets or events occurring away from the character, as well as facets of the game’s mechanics such as abstract statistics or the precise limits of abilities. Metagaming is an example of “breaking character”, as the character is making decisions based on information they couldn’t know and thus would not make in reality.
Metagaming is considered unsporting or cheating in a competitive gaming context,[ citation needed ] and is generally poorly received as it subverts the emphasis of accurate character depiction based on in-game experiences and back-story that defines role-playing games. Outside of role-playing, metagaming simply refers to players using knowledge or understanding of external factors (such as community trends or coincidental events) to gain an advantage in competition.
More broadly, metagaming can refer any or all aspects of play that occur outside of a given game’s fictional setting. This most prominently includes any discussion among players and/or the game’s master about the game’s events and contents. Traditionally, metagaming is generally frowned upon in role-playing communities, as it upsets the suspension of disbelief and affects game balance. However, some narrativist indie role-playing games deliberately support metagaming in “Director stance”[ [vague]/wiki/Wikipedia:Vagueness) ] and encourage shared storytelling among players.[1] It can be contrasted with live action roleplaying games with a more cinematic style, where the use of metagame references to specific books and films, either before the game or during play, prompts the players as to the atmosphere the organisers are aiming to create.
In the case of Overwatch and general competitive play, it is specifically referring to popular strategies and performance and can also be defined similar to “min-maxing” or “power-gaming”.
Last time I had a discussion about the word META I got someone complaining at me for almost an hour.
its always been like this, and society has always been ruined
also lets argue about this hang nail i have
except it shouldnt happen with skill based heroes, they should always be meta, allowing everything else to be valable down the high end
…I’m getting a huge sense of deja vu
Min-maxing, imho, is pretty much the best parallel to draw when it comes to games like OW. Due to the team based nature, the various compositional elements, etc, you are trying to min max your entire team. That is, as far as this game is concerned, meta. Every new meta starts off as some min maxed sort of fringe theory, look at how GOATs evolved and took over. Hell, it’s a comp named after the contenders team that popularized it. Look wtf it did to the game.
Min-maxing as a team is basically what dictates the meta. The better the min-max, the higher the chance it forms the new meta. We run meta not just to give us the best chance to win, but to also understand what it takes to run the meta so we can develop ways of breaking it. Evolution. Natural.
There is no escaping meta. It will ALWAYS be a thing in this style game and so many others.
Not once have I heard of meta being an acronym until now. If anything, it seems like people are just retroactively making it one.
