Mercy Fanaticism?

I mean… half of his body was lost, he didn’t have much choice, i guess.

But then again, i assume Mercy wouldn’t just let him bleed out and die.

She saved his life, yes. She’s a doctor, it’s her job. But the reconstruction was up to him, that’s all I’m saying. A lot of people seem to think she made him a cyborg against his wishes when that’s not the case. If it was the case, that would certainly make her less of a Mary Sue.

Also, as a 36 year old woman I would like you all to know we don’t start looking like old crones in our late 30s. Her appearance isn’t weird for her age.

We only point this out because they acknowledge this in her lore and in the game.

“A guardian angel to those who come under her care, Dr. Angela Ziegler is a peerless healer, a brilliant scientist, and a staunch advocate for peace. She is one of the most gifted doctors in the world when it comes to medical technology, and has applied such technology to her own body; effects have possibly included slowing/halting her aging process. She likes Swiss chocolate.”

Then there’s Mercy’s interaction with Mei:

Mei: Doctor Ziegler, I don’t think you’ve aged a day since I last saw you.
Mercy: And neither have you, Mei.

I personally don’t believe that whole you turn old once you become 30-40 thing.

Ah sorry about that :cold_sweat:. I always assumed Mercy looked a tad too young to be 37, honestly i find her looking a bit more in her late twenties, or like she just hit 30.

Because I’m a big fan of fair and fun to play heroes while maintaining a balance within the game. Mercy’s very character represented all of those things extremely well to me, more than any other hero - a lot of Mercy mains would feel the same way as well…

She was mostly perfect while only needing a few very minor changes. She didn’t needed a full-on rework. Which was/is largely a failure.

Besides being approachable to play at all levels, from the casuals to the MLG, Dorito/Mtn. Dew guzzling edge-lords, her lore is intriguing. Her design and angelic theme is amazing. Her voice lines are iconic (was even more so in 1.0 in my opinion). Her personality is darn charming as all hell, and she gave her players a sense of pride in that careful planning, strategy, and movement from the back lines can be just as effective as being in the heat of the battle fighting for the play of the game in the front lines. Doing it all with class and grace.

Mercy has been my favorite hero since I started playing this game. She will continue to be my favorite long afterwards, and no amount of gutting or nerfing will change that opinion.

a Lover of True, Fair, and Fun Balance.

People like her because she is the easiest hero to play. Mercy is the only hero currently that can essentially just zone out and still be just as effective. This is why she ends up being the most played by a lot.

It’s fine. I don’t know what they could do to make her “look her age,” unless it was give her some gray hair because that’s the only thing that’s changed in my appearance from late 20s to now. Of course, I dye my hair to hide the gray, but that’s a different story… She’s apparently not supposed to look her age though, which I still find irritating because to me she doesn’t look like she wouldn’t be younger than what she is.

It’s the simplicity of the character’s kit, the character being a support and the impact the character had in all her iterations that caused the fanatacism.

She is approachable and in the beginning of the game she had one of the best ults allowing you to ressurect your entire team and potentially swing and win a game in the press of a button. The character wasn’t overpowered but the ult was extremely strong and easily recognizable as impactful as the ult literally won games singlehandedly. The feeling of being in overtime and ressing your team to pull off a win was probably one of the greatest joys in the history of the game. Even being a teammate it felt great to be like damn we lost and then hear “Heroes never die” and be like yes we have a chance to win!

Mercy 2.0 turned her into an overpowered beast so not only did the ult win games but it won every fight if you had it up. It felt less impactful than multiman res but it was just objectively stronger.

So when you take a casual crowd and put so much power into their hands(even when the character wasn’t overpowered) it causes them to disregard all the other benefits of the character. Suddenly the mobility, highest consistent healing, self regen, damage boost isn’t enough and they don’t get the same “fun” feeling that they used to from feeling impactful.

There has been no other character designed this way and the combination of all of the above leads to sections of her players being very vocal as their attachment to the character isn’t “traditional” like you would see in any other competitive games. People like their characters but it’s generally a video game staple(especially in hero games) that things will be subject to change, even radical change.

Oh yeah almost forgot, the old forums like/dislike design contributed to the casual players who are more likely to spend time on the forums to become a huge hivemind. Already you see more opinions being expressed on the new ones and the Mercyhive no longer dominate every conversation involving her.

I think that’s just the reason I like her so much, there’s more to her then we realize.

There’s a reason she has so little backstory even though Blizzard knows she’s a fan favorite.

Mark Jelly’s words😂

Gameplay wise, I still love Mercy. She might not be as fun, but at least she isn’t the monster she was a month ago.

She appeals to people who would normally never ever play an FPS game. For many players, such as myself, she is the sole reason they even started playing Overwatch. Mercy represents everything that makes Overwatch stand apart from other FPS games, and what really makes the game a diverse game with the potential for many different tactics and strategies, and a game where everyone is welcome regardless of past FPS experience (or supposedly; toxicity really has put a dampen on that factor though)

Valk is bad for two reasons
It dosen’t feel like it has any impact on the game at all (or at least none for the amount an ult should feel)
And it makes a very simple hero a boring mess for entire fights at a time

Valkyrie is kind of bland more than anything I think, at least in its current form. When you play Mercy it doesn’t feel impactful at all, and sometimes it doesn’t really feel like there’s a big difference from just toggle healing/boosting your team-members (and if only one of your team-members are taking damage then there is absolutely no difference if you need to heal, as only one person will benefit from the heals).

Flying really isn’t very engaging. You can fly high, and then just hover and use your long beam to heal/boost. The rest of Mercy’s kit builds upon flying back and forth, staying mobile, reacting quickly to changing situations and looking around to get a good overview. Valkyrie is kind of the opposite… fly high, hover, look down, press one of your mouse buttons… that’s it. It’s not very engaging so it’s boring and not that impactful.

Mass Rez and Valk are like the difference between a roast turkey and a turkey sandwich. You can make a turkey sandwich from the leftover turkey, but it’ll never be as good as that Thanksgiving dinner was. It won’t be as filling either.

I’d rather have a turkey sandwich, though.

That’s good for you. Most people miss that big fat roast turkey with gravy and stuffing.

She is a sassy, young, brilliant Doctor and Scientist, with a classically beautiful design and an angel theme. Not to mention her suit tells you enough about her body to imagine what kind of proportions she has but doesn’t actually show you.

In other words, she was basically designed to have tons of fanart made of her.

On top of that, she has a simple to understand kit that allows you to play at a wide variety of speeds (from “I frequently forget the MOBA elements of this game” to “I DON’T NEED MY ULTIMATE TO KEEP THE WHOLE TEAM ALIVE. LET’S f-ing GO!!!”) while still being useful to the team. Also, she can bring back people from the dead, she’s essentially a goddess.

And why do people feel like Valkyrie is bad? Because it doesn’t feel like it has an impact at all. If you re-watch a match you might be able to point out the many times Valkyrie saved the day, but during the match itself you’re more often than not questioning if you even needed to use the ult at all. It’s just too subtle.

I’m honestly not sure why Mercy is very popular, gameplay wise I get that because she’s fun to play (I think so too), but I see people obsess over her character and character design as well.

To me, I think her personality and design is pretty bland? She just seems like the stereotypical perfect character that are shown in many games/shows (blue eyes, blonde hair, white, very intelligent, looks to young to be true, sometimes representing an angel which in Mercy’s case is true haha, not saying anyone who looks like this are bland or bad etc, but these designs are particularly used for characters that are to be portrayed as perfect) so I just don’t really find her intriguing as a character since I find so many generic characters like her that most of the time as well lack personality.

No disrespect to anyone who plays or likes her, but I just don’t find her interesting whatsoever.

Man, I must be really tired, because I read Mercy Fascism at first.

Don’t worry, that thread’s coming.

Because she can fly, and she can heal.

Thats why I love her anyways.
