Maps, models, UI, audio unreliably loading; "Cannot load resources"; Repair/reinstall fixes nothing

Hi folks,

As the title says, I recently have experienced several issues, making it tough to enjoy my evenings after work playing my favorite game. :’(

  • Some maps never load and I get infinite loading times. This started with Kings Row, and now it has spread to Rialto, Junkertown, and Havana.
  • In game, models, sound effects, and UI often do not load - leaving me in a bizarre, silent arena fighting points of light.
  • After quitting the game, the next time I hit ‘Play’ I often get the 'Could not locate resources (0xE00300E0)" error. Scan & Repair will usually bring the game back for at least one launch, but the game will break again. Sometimes, I get ‘Whoops! Looks like something broke. Give it another shot.’, but the game then lets me update and “works” (with the above issues).

Here is my system information and the things I have tried based on other peoples’ solutions:

  • Windows 10 Pro, 16gb Ram, i5-3570k, GTX 1060 6GB, 2 SSDs (128gb boot disk / 512gb data disk). All drivers definitely up to date. While trying to play, I have few background programs and plenty of RAM in Task Manager. This PC has worked with Overwatch for years.
  • The ‘Cannot locate resources’ error and model render errors have been happening with increasing frequency over the last month or two.
  • The map-loading/afk timeout issues surfaced only in the last couple weeks.
  • I have Scan/Repaired many times.
  • I have uninstalled and reinstalled, even to a different folder (cannot install to a different drive, my boot drive has <20GB free).
  • I have reinstalled ‘Battle.net’.
  • I have removed the ‘Overwatch’ folder from My Documents.
  • I have set ‘Run as Administrator’ in the Compatibility tab for Overwatch (and Battle.net).
  • I am using the lowest possible visual settings at my recommended screen resolution.
  • I have disabled Discord overlay and tried closing Discord (and other programs) altogether.
  • I have tried switching between ‘Borderless Windowed’ and ‘Fullscreen’ at various points during play.
  • I have removed/re-added Overwatch Firewall rules.
  • My UI is re-appearing (sometimes), so Alt-Z is not the reason THAT is happening.

I will add a comment with my DxDiag.txt.
The reply-limitation and character limits make posting my DxDiag.txt difficult, but here is the first part of it, once I have a reply let me know if it would help and I’ll reply with the rest:

Thanks so much for your time, I am usually pretty good at troubleshooting but I really need help on this one. :frowning:

In order for drives to run properly, you need to keep 15% free. At a minimum you’d want 12%, but you’d probably start seeing issues if you don’t reboot often.

Because of the error you’re getting, I’m wondering if your hard drive is on its deathbed. I do see some other things that can offer trigger issues, like Wacom tablets confusing the Windows output (unplugging may help) and VoiceMeter is sometimes a culprit as well.

Instead of posting the rest of the DxDiag, please post it all together on Pastebin.com and link us here in a reply.

Thanks for the response!

My C drive has hovered between 8-12 GB free for about a year, I can work on getting that up to ~20GB but since its been that way awhile I’m doubtful that is the problem by itself. However, your deathbed comment sadly might be right - both my SSDs are quite old. :frowning:

My Wacom has been installed a long time, but VoiceMeter (via VoiceMod) is definitely a new piece of software I installed recently and didn’t consider - I could try disabling the virtual mic while not in use to see if that helps.

Here is the full DxDiag.txt: https://pastebin.com/23Es2kZP

Thanks again, you gave me some things to try - and definitely looking for any more ideas you might have after seeing the whole diagnostic!

Unfortunately, I only saw the addition of some app crashes (which could be the hard drive or the RAM) and some Windows updates errors.

Hey there!

Disabling the VoiceMod temporarily and disconnecting the Wacom tablet physically are great things to test in this case. Though targeting any other running background applications may help even if they don’t seem related. For example if Photoshop was running in the background while gaming it may consume resources from the GPU! Similarly, a security program might block the game’s ability to read data from the drive.

It might also be good to test reinstalling the game to a different storage device if that is possible. Though I noticed C has limited disk space so I wasn’t sure if there were any other available devices to test with. This would be more of a hardware test since our problem is related to loading resources.

Hope the info helps. Let us know how things go!

So after trying the above along with a CHKDSK, my Battle.net wouldn’t even open Overwatch - it just said ‘Initializing…’ forever in the update status. I tried an SFC run and a few other fixes, cleared out more of my C drive, and totally removed Battle.net and Overwatch from the machine. I reinstalled Bnet onto the C drive (which now has >15% free space).

Sadly, now the drive is stuck at 100% activity, and windows is crawling. The data disk writing only a few megabytes per second, and re-installing Overwatch has been a very slow day-long process. In the Event viewer, I’m seeing thousands of ‘Bad Block’ errors on the disk.

I’ve ordered a new SSD. I’m hopeful that I’ll be able to get my important data off of this one before it completely dies, but I think that short of a major driver issue I somehow have missed, I don’t know what else could be causing this kind of behavior.

Hopefully I’ll be able to get Overwatch working on the new disk. If I learn anything new I’ll let you know!

That is the behavior of a dying drive. I have a media drive dying right now, and while I was able to get some stuff off it, other things wouldn’t start moving.

An update - Removing Battle.net, Overwatch, and all related caches/files seemed to force a true redownload of Overwatch that finally worked. It took a long time on my dying drive but after a few hours it completed, the drive activity lowered back to normal, and I was able to try it out.

The process overall worked - I’m able to play without AFK timeouts and the rendering - while still slow (points of light/no models for a few minutes at the beginning of some matches) it is tolerable, and this will tide me over until new hardware arrives.

Thanks for all your helpful feedback, kept me motivated to stick it through

Not to necro an older thread but I am experiencing the exact same issues (save for my disk going 100%), but otherwise the issues are an exact copy of what I’m experiencing. Slow loading, models sometimes being a ball of light, random pause in the loading of maps, crosshair suddenly being gone for a little while.

I am sure my harddrive is not dying, but otherwise my issues are an exact copy. Should I make a separate topic?

Hey there,

It is an older thread but it’s within 20 days so I’m personally fine with it if it’s the same topic. Thanks for reaching out! We’re always happy to help regardless <3

Do you have any other storage drive to test the game installation on? C, D, E, F, etc. If not it’s totally ok but that would be the easiest way to verify an issue with the storage device vs other types of issues.

Let us know how things go. Cheers!

Figured I’d give that a try (moved it from D:\ to C:) and it worked like a charm… still I feel my D-drive works like magic with everything else but Overwatch… could it be anything else? If not I’ll just keep a good eye on the drive

Huzzahs are in order! Huzzah!

Possibly a bad sector or corrupted data. We have a bit of info on troubleshooting drives here. Though if the problem is only with a specific part it may be better to discuss it with a local PC technician (or replace the device, whichever you deem more cost effective. Though neither is 100% necessary if it’s working on the other drive). Our ability to assist with hardware is limited since we are an online service. ><

Super glad things went well. Cheers!

Fair enough. Thanks for your swift responses! Have a digi-cuppa coffee! :coffee:
