[Main Thread] EU Servers - high latency

You’re not the only one, a lot of people in EU reporting this issue from today.

Hello,

I’ve started experiencing high ping (200-300) on Overwatch only. All other games and programs are unaffected. I restarted my router and computer multiple times to no avail.

Looking at previous topics, I noted that running WinMTR is often requested to I have done that. Results below:

WinMTR:

yeah ive been having the same problem. when i open the network graph and try to test the IP that it shows (15.184.41.93:26544) in winMTR it just tells me that it is unable to resolve the hostname…

If you’re trying to test EU server connectivity, you can use either of these addresses:
185.60.114.159
185.60.112.157

This is the Americas & Oceania forum, but I see this WinMTR was run to an EU server. It looks like the connection is originating in California.

Are you playing from US-West and connecting to Europe? If so, the ping looks better than great and there are no glaring issues in the test.

No, I’m playing from the UK.
Didn’t realise I was on the US forums, my apologies. Will I have to repost it there?

This is an IP and a port number after the colon, which (the port) is not used for a WinMTR. I don’t recognize the IP from my time here in tech support, but it could be a new datacenter I suppose.

You could repost, but I think it’s going to be very difficult to track down an issue with the WinMTR software. This is because the home router is showing an occasional ping of 119ms (between PC and router), but the average is only 2ms. It’s probably some sort of mechanism ignoring the ping traffic, but it also prevents us from learning much about it.

All I can discern from the test is that your ping to the Netherlands server is quite bad, and there might be some issue happening with the Blizzard peering partner. But again, the EU staff would have more knowledge about the happenings on that continent

ok ill repost on the eu forum, thanks for the guidance

I imagine it’s just a one-off ping spike to my router, which to my knowledge wouldn’t affect the consistent ping issues to Overwatch. I’ll repost this on the EU forums but thanks for your time

Definitely post the WinMTR you posted here. The first one does seem concerning. Unfortunately, the US staff is not in their offices for several more hours, so I don’t have any point of contact to EU.

I think you’d both have more luck with PingPlotter. WinMTR is has not been updated for… decades. It’s the standard tool Blizzard refers to, and has documentation for, but I believe that’s due to the simplicity of the software – which isn’t a helpful feature in every case.

It can’t be a player issue…

About 80%, maybe more, of players are having the same issue.

Usually their ticket queues and forums are flooded when it’s a server issue (haven’t spotted any floods of posts here or on EU forum), so it’s hard to be sure. Plus, only the one EU WinMTR is showing issues, not both. I’m sure if there is a server issue we’ll see a tweet from Blizzard, or perhaps they’ll share some info in the EU forum.

There were on EU, but some unhelpful mod keeps merging them… I know you shouldn’t have laods of posts about the same thing… But the game is unplayable on EU atm…

There is clearly a fundamental issue. That shouldn’t require any tickets. They should be monitoring server health/performance.

They did reply to a tweet when someone asked what was up… Almost immediately. Then when provided details they went silent. So they can reply quickly, they are just deliberately choosing not to. Which is concerning and generally poor practice (but Blizz haven’t really got a great track record there).

edit. Just logged back into EU to see if it was fixed. It isn’t (this has been over 12 hours now…).

I am in the Practice Range and my ping is 218… It says I am on the CDG1 server… that is Paris… I am just outside London.

I know you neglect the EU forums, and rumours were that they only care about NA and Asian players… But I never thought I’d get proof so quickly… Only been playing 3 months lol.

I wont expect you to reply… Blizzards standard is to reply once, be unhelpful, then never reply again leaving everyone in limbo lol.

They’ve said they are always monitoring.

The training range will always use a deprioritized server, so that’s not a good tool for checking latency or server location.

Just to be really clear, I’m an MVP (volunteer, not staff), but only for the US/Oceania forums. I don’t have any access to EU staff.

Cool.

Get the same ping in game.

And many many more…

I appreciate that. And while that is great for moderating some of the weird behaviour on these forums… Maybe someone from the actual tech team should be looking into some of these.

And there should never be a need to regionalise the forums for tech issues… Unless you don’t see EU as important as NA… because responses to support tickets and forum responses don’t happen in EU.

Also high ping here, and when I asked in game a couple of people noticed the same latency (approx. 140ms) compared to a usual latency of about 40ms. Also EU (for me, specifically UK).

Not having this issue elsewhere.

Seems to have coincided with the launch of BC for WoWC.

About a year ago, there was an issue whereby a bunch of EU/UK people were being routed to Blizzard login servers in the US resulting in a strange, very consistent elevated latency of about the same. It took a couple of days to be diagnosed. I wonder if something like this happened again?
