Honestly? You’re probably right about that.
Lucio was written as Afro-Brazilian in his backstory on launch.
There was just nothing about him in-game that distinctly reflected it.
They fixed this ludonarrative dissonance with the capoiera skin- a martial arts invented by Afro-Brazilians- and Portuguese voice lines- the language a favelan resident would speak.
Because there’s a difference between black Americans and black Brazilians. Not all black people are the same.

No it wasn’t? The lines were, but the fact that he is Brazilian is something that we’ve know since ever. He only didn’t have much to show in game for it. Until last January, he had one skin (Seleção, as the other football skin isn’t really representative of Brazil due to the colors, and football being popular around the world), against four that represent things that are more often connected to other countries rather than with Brazil (both his hockey skins, Andes and Jazzy). Now he has Capoeira too but that’s it.
100% this, i don’t know if you are a brazilian too, but if you don’t, gratz on your informations man, you got it right.
Oh, and this guy called Eggcelsior it’s just a troll, c’mon Lucio has always being brazilian.

I never said he wasn’t? My point was it’s tidiculous to say someone is xenophobic and apparently now racist to not like his new voice lines
If you suddenly have a problem with non-English lines being added after launch despite there being precedent for this as demonstrated on the most popular healer in the game- who happens to be a white woman- and you didn’t care then, then yeah I’m gonna pick up what you put down.
You can dislike the lines because of Jonny’s performance however. No one is stopping you from just not liking how they sound; I’ve seen natives go in on his “Obrigado”. But let’s cut the crap and get down to brass tacks here. This is now only a problem because it’s Lucio, and people have been adamant on sticking up for his previous characterization despite the fact that he wasn’t all that different from a black American in-game. Not all black people are alike, you know, and it’s great that Blizzard agrees with me.

It depends on why you don’t like something. It is not just “not liking”, it is “not liking because it isn’t English” that is xenophobic.
And before we start going in circles again, read the previous posts to see which post has the xenophobic statement.
By this same logic people who prefer dubbed anime over subbed are xenophobic too

Haha, I’m not Brazilian at all! I am black American though, and it always annoyed me that Lucio was the only hero without proper cultural representation (“can mah boi at least get an accent?”) It got to the point where I’ve been writing my own fic about his life in Rio, and from there I started doing research and talking to Brazilians to get an idea on what black Brazilian and favelan culture was like. It’s been a good experience for tangential learning. Lucio has an amazingly rich history tied to him, and I will be damned if Blizzard doesn’t start capitalizing on it more.

Plenty of people have said they just don’t like the lines. I haven’t called them bigoted.

Can’t wait to Lucio get a cinematic. For real man, he deserves it. Oh, and some new voice lines, not the “hi” basic ones, i’m saying the ones you can get in loot boxes and stuff, event lines, in portuguese of course.

Not really, since on that case, you need to understand pretty much everything to understand what you are watching. In Lúcio’s case, you literally have to know three lines (for a total of five words). You don’t even need to know what they mean, you just have to know more or less how they sound and what they are connected to, if that much. We all had to do that at some point in the game for every bilingual character that speaks a language we don’t know. So that’s a false equivalency, the argument that it is “because you don’t understand what he is saying” doesn’t hold any water when you actually examine it.
While you guys may have gone over it, you still don’t understand what he was trying to say. That’s apparent when you call him xenophobic.

Hanzo has his ult at least. Lúcio had nothing and I think we ought to appreciate Johnny’s effort.

I believe Mei has native spoken voice lines for abilities as well, but i don’t play her enough to know that.

What’s apparent is that people can’t just say “I don’t like the new lines because they sound weird.” There’s been a bunch of hemming and hawing over people’s sudden magical inability to form basic psychological associations between words and actions because the cut off point is apparently a game’s release date. Like, you could perfectly understand Mei’s enemy ult in Mandarin because it was in the game at launch, but with the black guy people are acting like we’re asking them to move a frikkin’ mountain to associate “non-English” with “enemy ult,” like that’s a novel concept in Overwatch, because it came out after the fact. Give me a break.
The arguments against the inclusion of Portuguese have been logically inconsistent and transparent, and you should ask yourself why black people and Brazilian natives aren’t falling for them before getting offended that we think it’s stemming from some level of being uncomfortable.
