It’s kinda crazy that almost nobody talks about how backwards the system is for lootboxes considering how little they offer in return, especially in comparison to the old system. You used to get credits for skins and actually were able to purchase any skin you wanted every once in a while.
Now we just have:
Get a duplicate → Get points to a new lootbox
or
Get a duplicate → Earn enough dupes for a lootbox → Open new lootbox → Get another 4 duplicates
I watched Frogger last lootbox video to see how many he actually got and out of 85 lootboxes (340 chances to get new cosmetics), he got 13 non-duplicate cosmetics. That’s 1 cosmetic for every 6.5 boxes. 327 duplicates for 2 months of grinding and watching streams for lootboxes.
I’d contest your argument, but it’s such a narrow-minded take that it’d be like arguing about art with someone who’s blindfolded. I’m not falling for the ragebait.
That’s because he already probably had all the white, blue, and maybe purple quality items. What is he supposed to get if he already has them? It’s a free to play game, they are not going to give ppl free premium currency from boxes that are already giving skins that cost 20 dollars for free.
As someone who has played since the start, I already have all non legendary items. In the first season of lootboxes having the past 6 seasons of items added to them, I had all the white, blue and purple quality. So the next 5 seasons is just getting legendaries and duplicates for more boxes for more chances at those legendaries. Which is totally fine imo. I get pretty much every shop skin for free after 1-2 years.
In the old system I had everything in the game the second any event dropped and any duplicates (even if it did mean coins) meant nothing. It was pretty pointless to ever open boxes for me
All I ever did was accumulate those coins and not use them….why I had like 100k of them when ow2 dropped
New system I at least know that any duplicate means I’m building toward an item I don’t have
And it’s worth mentioning that I don’t have those items because it’s a paid system now…the point of which is to get people to spend money…kinda defeats the purpose if they don’t lock out stuff
I’m not a fan of f2p monetization, but I’m not going to complain about a system that gives me access to said paid items for free either
Is that a self-synopsis? Thanks, but I already knew that about you. Please comeback when you have something meaningful to add.
He had several purple items as well in his lootboxes, if I recall correctly.
Those $20 skins are also only $20 dollars because their prices are hyper-inflated. Blizzard makes bank just by selling one mercy skin, let alone every skin they’ve released up until now. Also, they aren’t concerned with rewarding players hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of skins as is evident by how much they dumped over in China. This game can continue to sustain itself quite comfortably even if they give out a tiny bit more.
13 new cosmetics every season is what you get (for older accounts like ours) if you grind for every lootbox including watching streams that promote the game and earn Blizzard even more money. The time and effort put in far out-weighs the rewards received by a considerable amount.
That would fine if the system for purchasing things wasn’t so absurdly greedy. $20 per cosmetic is absurdly high and a single mercy skin at that price can sustain them for quite a bit as we’ve seen in the past when they showed how much money people spent on them. Now multiply that buy x20 - x30 for every cosmetic released in a season and you’re telling me that’s a fair system?
I just want them to expand the lootbox pool because this is my problem. I basically have everything so lootboxes mean nothing to me. But there are things I don’t have. They just aren’t in the lootbox pool. And I understand they don’t want to put collab items in the pool. That is fine. But perhaps they could include more stuff. I spend plenty of money on the game. It’s not like the things I don’t own are things I would have bought anyway.
I will say, that it would be nice to get the current usable credit for duplicates to go toward buying items. But that needs to be hedged a tad. A suggestion that would fall equally on both sides:
For Normal and Rare item duplicates, get awarded points toward a box, same or similar to how it is now.
For Epic and Legendary duplicates, award say, 5 and 20 gold respectively for them (new credit, not legacy). It’s not a lot, but it can add up. But we know that will fall on deaf ears. Those numbers could be tuned as well, just suggestion. Didn’t want to come across greedy. Maybe 20 and 50 respectively?
Personally, I had 114 loot boxes that I opened this past Saturday. I went in knowing I already have the first 3 tiers complete, so would be getting a lot of duplicates out of those boxes, with the exception of the OWCS ones. But here’s the thing:
Out of the Epics and Legendary boxes, I got 9 legendary items. 2 from the Epics, 7 out of 7 on the Legendary. Okay?
I got another 10 legendaries out of roughly 100 normal loot boxes (factoring in duplcate extras). That came out to roughly 1 legendary ever 10 NORMAL loot boxes. O_o
So yeah, I got 19 Legendary items out of 104 boxes. I don’t really count the OWCS ones, as those have a different loot pool.
I also watched Frogger’s box opening video. One difference there too, he had more than one account to open them on I think. You can find mine as a VoD on Twitch. Same username as here if you want to see how those went and what I got.
What do you want in the lootbox pool that isn’t there? I mean I wish they didn’t wait a year to update them, but other than seasons 1-3 items, and colab/bpass items, what isn’t in there? I guess some esports stuff. But pretty much all the ow1 and shop items are in boxes.
Well for starters I do wish it updated seasonally. But also not every skin is in there. I basically want everything that isn’t a Mythic or collab skin available. Some items are definitely still locked. And I think that there are nameplates and titles that would be nice to include eventually too.
Any idea on what is missing from the lootboxes that isn’t collab, bpass, or esports items? Cuz I already had all the ow1 items, so idk if any of those are missing. The single legendary shop skin I know is missing is a Kiri time skin; the original blue and white one. But other than that, the boxes seem to have everything.
I guess some limited time event things too, like Lego bastion. But I never expected those to be in there. Or like pink mercy.
Than you live under a rock. There were countless of topics about this, but it was long time ago, since it´s in game for a while now. those topics were talking exactly about this. I remember that, cause if you played OW1, you also sit on a hoard of useless white currency, that you can´t use on anything these days AND you get tones of duplicates, that gives you just another box of duplicates sometimes.
(I even conected this topic to a fact, that rewards for endorsment in OW1 were boxes, while now you only get useless xp).
They’re right though, it is just complaining about free stuff for the sake of it
The game has to make money somehow. If the lootboxes just rapidly gave you everything for free then they wouldn’t have any incentives for you to spend money on the game and without money they would lose reason to keep developing the game at the current pace with the current quantity or just altogether.
The current system is very generous for a free game of this caliber, so I’d measure the criticism reasonably
I’m pretty sure almost all OW1 things are in the boxes, barring esports stuff, Blizzcon stuff, and things like Lego Bastion(though I think that was the only skin like that in OW1), as well as the origins skins for buying the game back in the day I believe
Though I think I remember them doing something with those origin skins, so people might have those now
If you buy most of the skins when they come out or if you are like frogger who gets codes for them and gets them for free, then yeah loot boxes are gonna be pretty lame for you. But if you’re like me and almost never buy anything apart from the battle pass then you are gonna get a new cosmetic more often than not. On top of that they give you so many loot boxes for doing almost nothing. It’s actually crazy. I don’t think any other game does this.
Speaking of the esports loot boxes they straight up gave you over 20 for watching the grand finals a couple weeks ago. I got two legendary skins (water warrior soj and azure hanzo). Actually crazy.
Exactly. If you’re an active player, you’ve got everything in OW1 without paying for anything. You were just building credits at that point. I’m still sitting at around 150k because they barely give you anything to grab in the gallery. Even then, I still opted to use event boxes to get the new stuff rather than just buy them, so I had a reason to get excited opening them. Now, as someone who only ever bought the battle passes and a few starter bundles, getting skins that I passed on, like the summer Illari skin, for free makes me happy for my patience.
