LGBT Representation

I never wanted to identify with her. I wanted her to be written as something more than a token lesbian. And if that cant’ be dont, don’t just make her a token character in the first place.

then at least 10%-25% of the cast should be LG (2-6 characters), more than 1% should be trans (at least 1), and some additional portion should be Bi… some people theorize in a world absent of homophobia there would be very few on the extremes (heterosexual / homosexual) and a lot more people saying i’m into whatever. and blizzard should acknowledge that my guy. if its more accepted, it should be more visible. not the reverse

…How exactly is it supposed to have “meaning” in a video game about beating people up?

What is it that you want? Reaper and Sombra calling her names while she flirts with Dva in the corner?

I’m a gay man. When I want my Gay Fix in a video game I pop in Dragon Age 2, not Overwatch. Blizz announced it so we can write our fanfics and go to bed.

What…story?

Overwatch, the game, has no story aside from “12 randomly selected people show up at an undisclosed location to beat the crap out of eachother.”

Whenever people say Tracer isn’t lesbianing hard enough I really don’t know what to offer aside from-- write a fanfic or play another game where the focus is on romance.

LOL you mean more is coming in 20 years?

Then yeah

I’m sure we’ll get more lore on her, in fact, it’s rumored that Tracer saves her sometime during uprising. Just a rumor😂

I’m just hoping it doesn’t shove political stuff down our throats👍

I think they said they will be careful with it.

They have to be unless they want an implosion of anger lol

We already know that reaper is getting more lore april 10.

We might get some random lore tidbits every now and then but the bigger lore stuff is more likely to be released during events and other stuff like that.

Why does representation of any kind matter?

I rather important things be focused on, such as the gameplay, over something trivial, such as ‘representation’ of any sort.

insert comic about mondatta rigging his votes

How did the Mei animated short make people literally cry? It had depth and meaning and showed humanity in a character.

I haven’t really figured out how to argue with a strawman. Leaving the lore up to fanfics? People write them no matter what blizz says, they aren’t in direct control of that.

Except blizzard has an ENTIRE WRITING TEAM with a LEAD WRITER to write the story of the game. They’ve put out Animated Shorts and comic books. You’re blatantly incorrect about Overwatch not having a story.

If they gonna do this, then they have to do it for everyone. It’s never gonna be enough representation for people. There is no trans (couldn’t finish the word, because it’s banned by Blizzard OMEGALUL) character. Not that it matters. Etc…

It is what it is. Don’t need anything special. I wouldn’t mind if they gave Tracer some kind of a skin or whatever to support it, but if they don’t I dont care either. The heroes sexuality is the least interesting about them to me.

What does her sexual orientation have to do with being a hero? That was just a snippet that shows our heroes have someone or something to go back to during the holidays. Why should someone be defined by their sexual orientation. I think Tracer is another person in the world and she shouldn’t be considered any different than anyone else because she happens to have a girlfriend. What you are calling for is actually segregation. You are asking for her to be treated differently. That is not what civil rights are about. Civil Rights are asking that you put aside your differences to treat everyone in an equal manner and all their rights are equal.

Also, games should not be used to push a political agenda. They’re supposed to be fun and help you relax.

Did you know, the people who write the lore for Blizzard are not the same people who fix bugs and balance the game?

Exactly, very true👍

(Character 20)

Uh… (Jesus, it’s getting hard to navigate these again.)

That’s a bit much. It’s pretty accepted as it is right now (At least…in most western countries.) I kinda doubt people would just be sliding into the middle like that or it’d become this thing that everyone secretly is. It’s a thing one cannot control after all…You’re either one or the other.

That doesn’t answer my question at all. Why did you respond to it?

the problem with that is that blizzard already created lore in the first place for it and are barely following through. They should have just released it as-is wiht no shorts or comics and it would still be an amazing game. I actually like the little glimpses we get into the charcaters lives, and of course people are hungry for more. My question here is, if you’re not going to develop characters, why give half-***ed plots and stories about them in the first place? If they decided to start doing it, they should improve their storytelling abilities and release something bigger so that we actually get something really awesome to experience from it. I love the little mention that tracer is a lesbian and would love to see the story of overwatch expanded more and to see the kind of personalities the characters in the universe have. Fanfiction is awesome of course, I’m all about it. Every ship is pretty cool to see- gay, straight, bi characters that people create based off of their headcanons, but seeing it implemented is actually really cool. I think the main problem stems from the fact that we have nothing to go off of, and that they started something that they couldn’t keep up with.

That’s the thing, no where do I demand representation. My entire point of this thread is that if they’re are going to do it for anything, they need to get it right and not make this weird tokenism thing okay.

I’d rather not have token minority characters at all if they’re done the way Tracer was done.

Your right, your right, I take my question, I take it back👍

its really easy to see you’re someone who frequently sees themselves in everything they consume. so i really have a hard time connecting with you. you’re most likely a white heterosexual dude in his teens, twenties or thirties. and i cant criticize you off that alone. but you have to at least recognize that in the history of games, most characters look at least to some degree like you. They’re likely white men. and yeah, there are exceptions, but in the sea of video game characters, a splash of them are women, and like a tiny raindrop are gay.

i can’t make you understand why it matters because you don’t have a stake in this whatsoever. but you should at least recognize that you’re extremely lucky because right now you’re represented all the time, in every single game out there in existence, if there are human characters. technically speaking, that is your representation.

try imagining if the situation was reversed and every single character was a lesbian poc woman and whenever you asked for a white man they shouted at you telling you that seeing yourself didnt matter, didnt you have that one dude in the bikini to “look up to” or whatever. he had a fling with a girl, and like…he died, but he had a meaningful role in the plot!

if you dont understand it, you dont understand it. but its hard to take your viewpoint seriously if you dont at least consider what the other side is actually dealing with.
