It’s essentially become a taboo topic, in the same way that extreme politic discussions, pro-choice/pro-life, and other widely controversial topics tend to drag towards.
A simple way of saying it would be that it’s just the nature of the beast.
I don’t rightly care who they make LGBT as long as they do it respectfully (like how they revealed Tracer) and that things continuing on from the reveal are not treated like a joke nor a stereotype.
For men there are several really good candidates as far as where a reveal would further their character development positively and also not be something that could end up as a joke, but that’s for a different thread likely.
All in all we desperately need more lore for everyone, and this reveal can be counted as lore. We’ve been getting tossed bread crumbs for two years. I want the dang loaf already.
the first part. I think you might be missing a comma, but if that’s the case I get what you mean. Im not saying there isnt hardship, but the toxicity between the two are still different.
Still? Missing that comma even after the edit?
yeah, meanwhile most of us here know it wouldnt be that hard to avoid those stereotypes and create a successful gay male character.
I suppose so, but I think I addressed the issue twice now anyway. unless im still misunderstanding
Exactly, it’s not really rocket science imo. They’re regular people, so idk why media insists on doing these messy stereotypes.
if there’s one thing i appreciate these new forums, it’s that they no longer have a limit to how much you can say on them. we’re nearing 1000 posts, people!
right I see it now. allow -me- to reiterate. you never hear the same opposition to that, nor the same quantity or arguments against it. it’s still there, but the problems against it are different. there’s blatant double standards for the worst reasons when it happens.
There was still come legit criticisms amid the hateful backlash.
I think they should take into consideration some of the qualms of the Tracer reveal for how they handle the next character’s reveal whenever that is.
What were the issues? I didn’t really see too many at the time, but then again I wasn’t looking for them either.
Sorry, I can’t recall them to memory.
I just remember reading several posts that actually were actually pretty interesting from a lore standpoint.
My only gripe was that she took off her chronal accellerator or whatever. Why even keep it around in the first place? Why wear it ever? Raised some questions for me.
Nothing to do with the reveal, since I don’t really care for the romantic adventures of the Overwatch crew
I think one of them was that it was too obvious to be tracer?
She needs it in close proximity. When out and about, it’s more convenient to wear than to carry
I remember seeing a tweet from Chu I believe where he said she doesn’t need to wear it constantly as long as it’s very close nearby. When she’s out she needs it on for ease of access since she’s moving about, but if it’s charging in the living room she can be chilling on the couch no issue.
yeah, he confirmed it right before he confirmed she was a lesbian and not bi.
Okay ty! I didn’t have a twitter at the time so I only saw screenshots.
i dont have one either honestly. i just check in on his and a certain voice actor’s page every now and then, craving news and lore.
this game is based on real world stuff, Symmetra doesn’t need to be autistic to push the story of overwatch forward, but she is. Because autistic people are every part intrinsically apart of our world as everyone else. Torbijorn doesn’t need to suffer from dwarfism (which migraines are known to be a common symptom of, which he does complain about them inside the game itself), to be a genius engineer, but he is because he exists in our world.
Overwatch, is meant to be special to people because it was and is marketed as a culmination of various cultures, ethnicitys, walks of life (for the record 9 of the characters in overwatch, 11 if you want to consider some of the fantasy ones like tracer’s chronal disassociation and reapers rapidly dying cells that have to be required by stealing the life force of others, are disabled. Just throwing that out there.), religions, and yes, genders and sexuality.
Overwatch takes place in our world, overwatch takes place in a imaginary future of our world. However many things are based off of what is here, right now. The diversity in the game, is nothing but a meager representation of the true diversity that exists in our world right now.
You say sexuality and gender “politics” have no place in a game, but yet are as innately human and natural as the world. I’m from the native american Wampanoag tribe and people who are “two-spirit” (commonly thought as identifying as both man and woman) dates back over a hundred years. And for the Iroquis, texts show this dates back to 1722 for them.
LGBT people have always existed, and gay relationships are see not just in humans but in other species as well. They’re very much real, and expression of sexuality and romance is often of importance for people in games, where they can pick their partners and such (mass effect, fable, etc.)
These things are important for people to relate to and share an identity with someone on screen, because many people including me don’t share an identity with a big rough and tough guy with guns. Some people feel more in-line with zenyatta, a more peaceful and tranquil outlook on the world. Some people don’t relate to a junkrats irrationality and dull logic, but are more in-line with moira who’s purely factual and orderly and proper and disapproves of flawed intellect.
You may relate to a character being heterosexual, I personally don’t, i’m pansexual, I swing for literally any team that likes women. So even with tracer being gay, I don’t really fully relate to her, because I like a lot of genders, and that’s super okay. Because many, many people out there will relate to her, and that’s a good thing. It’s good for people to have people who they feel attached to, that they feel like is someone they share a connection with.
Imagine that in our world, the majority of people were gay and the minority was heterosexual. But everyone just assumes you’re gay, all the time. But you’re not, you’re heterosexual, you don’t like people of your own gender. You’d like your own platform to express yourself, have characters you relate to, people you share this experience with. But you don’t have that, that platform is constantly being struggled to be pulled away from you. You get told to stop making heterosexuality your life, you get told that we don’t have to make straight characters just to please you, a small tiny minority. This all sounds pretty ridiculous to you, but it’s not, that is a small piece of the struggle we go through. And this is a fact, people assumed tracer was straight until it was revealed she isn’t. People probably believe i’m straight until I reveal i’m not. You say it’s not necessary. But until people stop assuming people sexualities and gender identities (this is too lengthy so i’m not getting into that right now), everyone assumes everyone in overwatch is straight. Including tracer unless they read the comics dude. So you say it’s irrelevant, that it’s hidden, you’re right, tracer doesn’t run around talking about how she loves chicks, but signs of heterosexuality all evident in various parts of overwatch including sprays (widowmaker & geralt). People wouldn’t know a damn thing. But you just accept that because that’s what you expect.
Also small bone to pick “Stop trying to push to have things shoehorned in because some 2% of the population will identify with it.”
For the record, 2% of the american population is 6.51 Million people. Can you imagine how big that number is outside the united states?. It’s measured that 21% of men and 22% of women in the USA are gay. So 1 in 5. About 71.65 Million Americans are gay. Yeah you underestimated that by a little bit huh? Also the transgender population in america by the last recording is thought to be 1.4 million. Even if that’s a much smaller number in comparison. I hope you realize that 1,400,000 people is still a pretty amazing sum of people. 1.4 million unique, personal, individual lives. You are saying should not have a stage, should not have representation in that aspect of their lives.
That’s disappointing that you feel that way.
tldr. just play the game.
