I feel like that phrase is almost never not called out as the blatant attempt at derailing conversation about queer iconography it almost always is- I’m genuinely curious as to what the ideal “straight pride” icon/flag would look like. I mean, there are people who’ve tried to make them, but they look bad to the point of “I want to physically hurl at this.” It’s like a poorly colored semaphore flag with gender markers poorly edited on top.
Edit: I wish I could post it here but have no idea if I can. I could give less of a crap about the message behind the flag, as a graphic designer it makes me go huuuueeeeeghh
Agreed, but in the name of fair discussion on aesthetics totally ignoring the historical significance of the LGBT+ flag, I’m genuinely curious what a straight pride icon would look like them.
But as the topic of the thread is that there aren’t any pride flags in the game anyway, if they really want something straight to rally around and feel at home with the fellow heteros it’ll have to be something unofficial. Maybe the Atlanta skins, or San Fran; they’re pretty edgy huh?
Hmm… I was kinda thinking Washington Justice or NYXL actually, since they tend to be red white and blue. A lot of real-world straight pride events are more closely tied to nativism and conservatism than they are… uh, celebrating straight history and speaking out against the oppression of the long silenced and misunderstood heterosexual community.
The new Florida Mayhem skins would work for that edgy vibe you’re talking about though, with the blue and pink they’re looking for to signify the “strong family values” of straight men and women.
The big deal is people might make it a big deal. So, to play it safe, just don’t bother (the game already gets criticized enough). That or, I like I said before, they might not be able to cause it’s a kind of symbol (like they need permission for any flag).
Same question I asked the other guy that said the same thing but is yet to get back to me; what would a proud straight icon be? Or a specific straight male icon, if you like.
Yeah, you said that. I’m asking what you’re suggesting that icon is. The “LGBT’ers” have the rainbow, what icon can represent heterosexual pride, then what icon can specifically represent male heterosexual pride?
It’s not bad, but like… how do I explain this?
It doesn’t tie into anything. There’s no reason for it.
It would purely be a grovelling marketing thing. Disingenuous.
If they could bring it into the game with idk, a limited edition rainbow unicorn skin or something. Sure.
I’m mixed on the subject. On the one hand people from the LGBTQ+ community should be able to display their pride… but on the other hand this is just ASKING for a political fight in game.
To play Devil’s advocate a bit, should people be able to have icons displaying their religion in game? Everyone should be able to display their pride of their religion, but it wouldn’t do anything in Overwatch except start fights unnecessarily.
Another point I would like to make is that when people tilt, they latch onto anything they can use against you. If someone is flaming you, they could potentially see your banner and make homophobic remarks because of it, and that would just plain suck for everyone involved.
This is true. However people want to display their pride in their religion sort of like how people want to display their pride in their sexuality. It’s not quite the same, but it’s similar enough to hopefully provide some perspective on what it might mean in game.
I wouldn’t complain if there was a flag icon, but I’m not sure it’s the greatest of ideas to implement it.
Because it’s ‘‘institutionalized’’, I agree it’s just a rainbow, but it can offense some people.
i.e.: St-Peter Cross is traditionally use as a Christian symbol, but people see it as a satanist thing.
It’s the same for the rainbow, it’s just a rainbow but people see it as a LGBT emblem, and from this it’s a systematized understanding.
So, no rainbow
Sure, this could be an inspiration from the rainbow pony which appear in this funny vid (LGBT people can see it as their rainbow, there’s no issue here:
St Peter’s Cross being a satanist symbol is just Hollywood BS; Its true and only meaning is that St Peter asked to be crucified that way, because he believed that he wasn’t worthy enought to die in the same way as Jesus…
