You mean the article that doesnāt actually call the developer racist, but says they made a creative choice that was inadvertently racist and went to talk about why it matters? I agree with the articleās right to exist in the conversation. I donāt know if Iād agree with the arguments simply because I havenāt played the Witcher series.
There is low precedent for āpersonal attacksā and even outright lies about a personās character being admissible in US court as crimes. Libel is extremely hard to prove here because it requires proving an intent that the person knew what they were saying was wrong (calling someone racist doesnāt usually come from a place of malice as much as people who simply donāt believe in racism anymore like to say that) and that they knew that the accusation would definitely result in harm to the person. Have fun proving in American court that Projekt CD was deliberately slandered to ruin them, and not simply critiqued from a personal viewpoint. Again, thatās the double-edged nature of free speech. You can pretty much call anyone anything you want to and not suffer any legal pushback. Look at how often on here people will defend the use of outright racial slurs, for example.
Not really. Developers arenāt sacred. Iāve called Sega a lot of really bad names and words for years. What are you gonna do about it? Call the police on me and every other Sonic fan? Get real.
To be fair, it took a solid two years before people began to wonder about another LGBT hero once Tracer was revealed. And the only reason people brought it up in the first place is because Blizz has repeatedly brought it up themselves, and have reiterated each year since 2015 that there was more than one LGBT character.
It is what I would call āfan service,ā and voice actors indulging in it is basically the next best thing to outright confirmation. It gives me life:
Hm⦠Iām unsure when it comes to the voice over cast! Voice actors themselves do not have much say in the way their character is written (though they can certainly give their opinions for some things in games that are more open like this).
The voice actresses for Sombra (Carolina) and Symmetra (Anjali) have been palling around for months now, usually making videos āin-characterā with each other and they have produced some more āshippyā content with one another for fun. Occasionally they bring in Mercyās va (Lucie) as well.
Matt Mercer (McCree) said he loved McHanzo, and even came up with a whole au of the two of them owning a tacky apartment together and has mentioned them together unprompted in several panels at this point.
Hanzoās voice actor (Paul) mentioned that Hanzo likes to eat sushi off of people and that heās got a big d*ck lmfao. These things arenāt really canon but thatās not gonna stop people from running with it because itās fun.
I am aware the voice actors dont have a say in whatās canon, but in matt mercerās case, he has openly supported that particular ship, even gave fans of it a nod with his decaf latte line. itās fun, but I know itās not canon.
I think its more accurate to say that theres been a relatively steady stream of LGBT advocate threads since Tracer, but that theres been ups and downs depending whats going on.
When Moira was introed, there was a spike in the threads (Is She trans? Are we getting another LGBT hero finally? etc etc). Conversely, when big events or huge balance issues were present, the LGBT threads got typically drowned out simply because people were more focused on the game. (Mercy balance threads, etc).
As for Blizzard, its a PR thing, a thing I wish they wouldnt do. Best case: They have good intentions and are trying to let people know they havent forgotten. Worst case, theyre pandering milking PR to say āHey Look, Diversity and inclusion and all that. Super important! Were progressive hereā
It would honestly be best to just Do instead of Say. Make the hero, develop the lore, reveal it. No need to iterate it in press releases. Just do the damn thing and let be what it is. People get what they want, and it cuts against pandering argument.
Stop right there. No, for many of us, it does NOT matter. Please do not pretend to speak for all LGBT people. I donāt care one way or another whether they add more LGBT characters. 0 cares given either way. Do not act like all of us NEED this in our lives.
Iām done, sorry. You clearly support double standards, what you wrote just proved it.
We can argue about Free Speech all day, which is pointless cause in the end Iām all for it, and youāre all for it, but at least I donāt flat out support double standards.
As is usual for posters like you who believe that doing or saying racist things isnāt nearly as bad as being called racist. Iāll mark another notch on my wall.
I havenāt seen those threads. At all. I have seen people that are LGBT saying the exact same thing that I have said, that it isnāt something we NEED to have. Some want them, some donāt care. And I donāt care how many people want it, nobody āneedsā the characters to be LGBT.
