🌈 LGBT and Diverse Heroes matter!

It’s just a word, you can label every hero LGBT now and you have your dream game? I mean, every character is already LGBT on deviantart.

Jeff should just say that every character is gay, and we can finally stop these posts.

Ham-fisting LBGT stuff into games happens because there are people who think its the “right thing to do.” The focus on characters revolves around the sexuality, rather than the person.

Tracer was liked well before it was revealed she was a lesbian. Its because of her personality and who she is, not what she is.

Sure, some people hated on Tracer following that. Screw those people. And some people all of a sudden thought tracer was the best thing ever. Screw those people too.

Your opinion of a character shouldnt rely on their sexuality. Thats like saying Soldier is better than Mercy cause Soldiers a man. Its a dumb point. The average person is gonna say “Err what? Thats dumb.”

People should not be speaking on behalf of others, Trans or not, unless they have their permission. Being trans doesnt make you the arbitor of all trans experiences. Thats a disservice to everyone that you think you can speak on behalf of other peoples lived experiences.

That being said, you are your own person. Its not wrong to have your own thoughts and ideas on things, even if others may not agree. You should share them, and your view on a subject if its relevant.

There are some that do, and it’s questionable.

World, what have you become O_o…

Just wanna toss in my 2c. You could just say that they’re selectable characters in a video game, however, I argue it’s more than that. I think it’s very similar to the comic book world. You want to see people like you, you buy Tshirts, you look forward to new content for that character. I’ve always said that in comic books, every kid needs a hero that looks like them. How heartbreaking is it to hear a kid say “how come none of the heroes are like me?” That sucks. I think the same goes for any kind of identity, including gender and sexuality.

I think it’s a noble goal to shoot for, to be all inclusive, and I salute Bliz for taking the first steps. I think it’s on us not to overreact when the next inclusive character isn’t ours, they can’t all be next, maybe it’s further down in the queue ya know? Just one dudes opinion, but lets not throw a fit when the next charity event isn’t for the ailment that’s most important to you, or the next hero doesn’t represent who you are. Instead, how 'bout instead you just be happy for those who benefit and hope you’re up next.

The gays will conquer Overwatch and there’s nothing we can do to stop them. Head for the hills! They’re coming to make your favorite characters a tiny bit different from what you wrongfully assumed they were, without altering the core of the character in the slightest!

hide the gameplay!!!

To be fair, overwatch isn’t really a universe with a lot of lore.
Nor does the lore really matter in the game but it is interesting.

There absolutely are no benefits. It’s a video game. Are you freaking kidding me? It’s not affirmative action at Harvard, it’s a video game.

There’s more nuance to this. I personally hold the opinion that it doesn’t matter in a specific context said context being that LGBT characters are more “relatable” to LGBT people, which I think is ultimately bad, why?

Because it makes the impression that LGBT and straight people are inherently so different it’s impossible to relate to the other person, I don’t like that.

To me it does NOT matter whether a person is attracted to the opposite or the same sex, there is still an attraction, and all of us who are not asexual can relate to that.

Other than that I feel both parties are annoying, I don’t see a reason to throw a party about an LGBT hero in a video game, because in the bigger picture it’s irrelevant, Tracer didn’t stop Third World countries from executing LGBT people, it didn’t stop conservative countries like mine being aggressive and possibly violent against them, it creates the impression that we just like to feel good but without necessarily doing anything significant.

As for the party who said “Keep politics out of games” or “Don’t make all heroes LGBT” I also disagree, political commentary has been in video games since video games had stories!

I hope my comment has at least opened up your perspective as to other possible reasons not to celebrate a newly announced LGBT hero.

Overwatch is a video game, there is no need for this type of promotion. I agree that diversity is important, but with the devs making tracer gay, that is forced diversity. Diversity that does not affect the game at all.

3.5% of the ow roster is confirmed LGBT, which is close to the percentage of LGBT people in the real world (either the whole world or the US I forget)

Black Panther’s highest grossing country after the US was South Korea. Interviews conducted of South Koreans who watch it (who were, as the interviews say, historically not exposed to them much other than the knowledge that they were slaves in America) shows that the movie helped change their attitudes towards black people (South Korea is historically colorist). Representation helps folks

Statistics don’t matter, actually.

My point is I don’t want 75% of the heroes to be LGBT just for the sake of “muh diversity”

Nobody’s asking for 75% of the cast to be LGBT. Mostly we’re asking for the “multiple” (more than one) we were promised. I think a gay man reveal would be nice.

probably wont be 75% anyway. they keep adding heroes so that is always growing.

But you’re fine with Americans and white people being over-represented.

You mean the two Americans in the game? And the white people are from different countries, which is pretty diverse if you ask me, it would only be a problem if there weren’t enough non whites in the game but there are.
