Layoffs in the industry

I am happy I work in Japanese company tbh. :stuck_out_tongue:

I’m just happy everyone agrees!

Hopefully. They did an awesome job doing MR, so maybe they can do the same for OW.

I’m thinking more like an asset grab similar to TikTok – they close up shop in the US and just do it exclusive overseas. Just speculation on my part, though.

This was only a team in Seattle that got hit by the layoffs. The main base in China is fine and they said this would have no impact on the game or future content. Most of the links about this topic have been VERY misleading. (Media doing what media does best).

Yeah, it is why I had written what I did down the bottom.

Do you think it was because it was the US office, or just part of a bigger cleaning house?

Tbh I’m not sure. There has been a lot of rumors circulating around this from the “self-proclaimed marvel director” laundering money to simple explanations as this is how the industry goes sometimes.

Have also seen other people mention it seemed once they reached a goal with this team the layoffs came. But ALSO read somewhere else that they have been planning and preparing to layoff staff since 2023 and that it was not a suprise to them.

So in the end who knows.

Gaming journalist wishing they were anything but…

Outside of all of this how are things going with you?

It’s very routine for big online games to “fire” their dev team once the game is made and online, and then put a maintenance team in its place.

Not in the places I’ve worked, but to be fair, that was a different time.

It is an odd choice for a live service game.

Success is only as successful as the money it brings in.
It’s easy to layoff employees in other countries as well. So they already did their job, aren’t really needed anymore and as much as that sucks that will get you canned from a job in certain countries. They don’t really protect foreign workers. I see it all the time as a software engineer.

It was a support team of 6 people in Seattle whose contract expired. Game “journalists” like to spread false news, specially about companies that don’t follow their ideology.

I am really only half joking when I say, you would need to have some medication to handle studying politics in the current political environment.

Anyway, good that you are going well! Long may that continue!
