Launching Overwatch Now Causes PC to Restart

With all due respect, you honestly think that a bunch of us magically gained hardware faults overnight on patch day, and the ONLY way to reproduce those hardware faults is via launching overwatch? That’s absolutely ridiculous.

I can play every game on my computer fine. I can stress test my GPU or CPU with furmark for 4 hours, no failures. I’ve updated every driver. I’ve uninstalled and reinstalled overwatch. I’ve reinstalled overwatch on a different hard drive. I’ve run memtest86 for an entire night of passes, no issues.

ONLY overwatch has an issue ONLY after busan patch, and there’s at least half a dozen of us reporting the same issue since Tuesday in the forums here.

It’s not a problem on this end.

I installed the latest patch and I have no problems at this time. Not to say there is not a problem with the game that is affecting a small number of users, but to be honest it happens every patch. In fact, I wouldn’t even be a forum MVP here in the technical support forum if I didn’t take the time to troubleshoot random crashes back during version 1.3 through 1.5 and took time to learn how my computer works with Overwatch. I can’t guarantee a solution if you do begin the troubleshooting, but I guarantee a solution will NOT be found if you don’t start.

If my environment hasn’t changed, hasn’t even been turned off for that matter, and overwatch no longer works after a patch, the onus is absolutely on blizzard to be fixing it.

I’ve rebuilt my system. I even tested a 2nd set of RAM despite the first testing clean. And i’ve done the troubleshooting in the aforementioned post. My event viewer doesn’t even catch any fatal errors, it just has normal entries up until a small break while restarting and then “The shutdown @ x time was unexpected”. Short of reinstalling windows or obtaining entirely new parts, i’ve done what can be done.

Thank you for posting, unfortunately, there are no reported errors in the DxDiag which is possible if you are getting stuck with hard reboots. So it is very unlikely there is any software issues at this pace.

Can you please elaborate the power supply you recently installed? Specifically a model number or at the very least how many watts it runs?

In addition, lets check for overheating issues. The best way to do this is to download and run the free program HWMonitor. This Blizzard Guide has details on how to do this:

Post the results of the HWMonitor test if you can.

The BIOS is the firmware that controls your motherboard and how your computer boots up. Look up the manufacturer support of your motherboard (or overall computer model if you have a prebuilt PC) and they should have details on how to update your BIOS.

I think I’m a bit lost on what I should be googling to update. When I look up my system I see

Processor - AMD FX™ 4100 Quad-Core Processor 3600 mhz, 2 Core…

Would I go to the MSI website or the AMD? I’ve been to both under the “Drivers and Downloads” sections and both make me choose items under a drop down menu that I can’t seem to match to anything I see when I go to my system information

I’m unable to post links but if you google for “MS7641 bios update” you can find the msi . com link for bios updates for that model.

That’s the download page for bios updates. The top one should be the most recent (confirm that by looking at release date). There is a link near the top of the section that is a youtube link on how to do a bios update.

It’s definitely ‘risky’ in terms of computer things. It can brick your system if for some reason something goes wrong during the update, but i’ve done it a dozen or so times in my life and never seen an issue.

No promises on the fix but i’m basically willing to bet money everyone with this issue since busan patch is in the same boat i was, which was bios update required. And it’s clear your system is older, the most recent bios patch for you is 2015, so ur definitely in the group of potentially needing the update.

So I followed the video and am currently on the step where I restarted the computer and am on the BIOS screen, although it doesn’t look anything like the video (I’m guessing since it’s so old). The option it gives me is
“BIOS update or boot 2nd BIOS from USB Drive
M-flash function as [BIOS Update]
Load BIOS source file from [USB:Sandisk Cr]

I’ve been hitting enter on the “load bios source file - usb sandisk” which just gives me a red pop up box that says
“options
USB: Sandisk Cruzer”

However when I hit enter nothing happens, am I entering the correct option?

Havent worked with mflash before but i think you want the mflash function as bios update choice.

Chances are you cant break anything by doing it wrong so just click around until it seems like it’s updating something :stuck_out_tongue: Just don’t turn off the computer or anything during that update.

How much for a plane ticket for you to come and look at my computer? I think I screwed something up lol…

I exited out of the BIOS screen (it wasn’t updating of anything yet, it wasn’t even recognizing that there was anything on the USB), and at first the computer loaded normally, now when I try to restart I get a black screen with a blinking white underscore line…why does technology hate me???

All you get is a blinking line, like not even an option to go into bios settings? Or can you still access those.

If yes go into bios and make sure that the boot priority or boot order or however it is called in your bios, make sure that your desired main hard drive is the first device.

Also if you still have the USB plugged in, it might be trying to boot to that or something, try booting without it.

Unplugging the USB did the trick! I plugged it back in and this time it let me select everything in the BIOS menu and it looked like it installed everything and rebooted, however now all that’s on my screen is a message that says “input not supported” which after googling seems to be an issue with the monitor? Is it safe to turn off the computer if I can’t see what screen it’s on and safe to assume it’s done installing everything?

You can definitely turn the computer off/on to try and get a monitor signal. If you continue to get input not supported that’s a bit interesting/concerning.

If you continue to get that message when you turn the computer on, if this is a desktop system you could try plugging the monitor into the onboard graphics of the motherboard, instead of a graphics card. Might for some reason have disabled the graphics card or something like that.

I do want to let you know i’m going to bed for the night soon and i’m quite busy tomorrow, though having gotten you into this pickle i feel pretty obligated to help you.
