I live in Dallas, Texas my normal ping should be around 72-95ms, but I’m getting connected to the wrong server. The servers I’m connecting to now are [sac1] 200.29.32.231 or [sac1] 170.84.209.100. This started for me after the summer games update as well. The ping spikes I’m getting now are making the game unplayable for me. I ran the WinMTR and here are my results.

I submitted a ticket yesterday to blizzard and received the following response:
Thank you very much for providing your system files and the WinMTR test. Looking over the results of the test I see that the latency increase is part of an issue between your internet provider and the NTT network before it reaches the Overwatch servers. We have been tracking this issue and collecting info from players, so I will add your info to what we have already.
Since the issue is between your internet provider and one of their peering partners (NTT) we would recommend reaching out to your provider to make sure they are aware of the issue. We are also going to be doing what we can from our end to help put pressure on NTT and the ISPs so they can get this resolved.
In the meantime if you are able to use a different connection, like a mobile hotspot or use a VPN, that may get you a better route to the servers and get your ping to come down. Once NTT fixes the routing issue your ping should go back to normal.
Hopefully this helps clear things up. Have a good one!
I followed their suggestion and provided information to my ISP (awaiting their response currently). My gut tells me I will just receive runaround from my ISP and they will say it is an NTT issue that is outside of their control. But hopefully awareness will at least help bring notice and resolve. For now I’ll just wait it out and see what happens. I don’t have a VPN or hotspot to use as an alternative.

Yeah, except I’m using a mobile hotspot and it’s doing it to me.

So small update from my end, while i still get placed in wrong servers across all 3 regions plus disconnect issues and unusual ping. On PTR everything works as it should be.
So in short it is blizzard’s fault and they are shifting the blame to buy time to fix it.

Still waiting for Bliz to even acknowledge they broke how their servers optimize routes with their new fancy server optimazation tracking software in the patch notes… Figures, I push for role que for so long and Bliz finally gives it to us, and now its all for nothing because the game is unplayable for millions of people.

I use Nord VPN for my mobile so I installed their desktop app. When using the VPN my ping is down to 25ms (where it should be). My ping is still at 150ms without using the vpn. I get better ping (110ms) playing on europe servers (im US central based)

WinMTR v0.92 GPL V2 by Appnor MSP - Fully Managed Hosting & Cloud Provider ~~~~
Hi, I just wanted to add my name to the list, I hadn’t played for almost a month but when I tried again a couple days ago, I had ~160 ping and am getting stuck on a far away server where no one seems to speak english. (I’m east coast) In the network view ingame (control + shift + n) it’s connecting me to [sacl] 170.84.210.62.
I did the WinMTR thing, here are it’s results:

I appreciate any assistance as this is kind of making Overwatch not really playable. I don’t DARE to try comp like this.
Thank you <3

Before the July 16 update I was averaging ~80ms (Sprint), but have since been very consistently getting ~200ms. From what I can see here, my traffic is also bouncing around Japan for some reason.

this is to south america/brasil. it works fine to get me to that server. but central it jumps a lot higher at about 7, im us east btw.
I also have this issue but the weird thing is that I am playing on west coast servers with other people in california (where i live) but get a nice stable and unclimable 125 ms. right when im about to hit masters too. The best part is that my vpn i use to get my ping back down to 35ms dc’d me and i lost 50 sr just gotta .
i tried to put in my trace but it has links in it so i couldnt put it in my response. but this ticket number has my trace Ticket Number: US67930309.
I’m really sorry to hear about those connection issues. Sadly, it looks like your path is getting routed to over seas and back. Blizzard doesn’t have any control over how internet traffic is routed.
Take care,
xd ADD SERVER LOCKING. THIS IS BS MY ISP CANT HELP ME FIX IT AT ALL.
FROM MY ISP - apparently you have to contact your backbone isp people or it wont ever be fixed since its routing wrong…
[Rebecca] We have spoken with them and they will not do anything about this issue either.
While waiting for a solution from Blizzard, I went ahead and downloaded ProtonVPN which is free. I connected to its US option and I can finally play without constant 180+ ping times.
I would still prefer a full fix instead of having to use VPN to play a game, but at least I have a workaround.

As for me, I’m having around 170 ping in matches where I’d normally have 30-50ms (as shown in my screenshots folder). I’ll have this in various different servers, of which it seems relatively common for me to get a Brazilian competitive match. This isn’t isolated to my main account, it also happens on my DPS practice account (I’m really bad at DPS). My latest screenshot of normal ping was 2 weeks ago (07/04/2019 MM/DD/YYYY) and it was 29ms in a competitive match, with the rest of my SCs having around the same ±5ms. Current troubleshoots attempted: Restart PC, Reinstall Overwatch [Live] (Also PTR Has Issue), Reboot Router from its LAN IP. This is all on ethernet with 110mb/s DownL and 10mb/s UpL East Coast servers. I just restarted my PC after flushing DNS and renewing IP and the ping is still a problem, my first QP was in South America/Mexico according to teammates
Thanks for the tests everyone,
For those of you who are having this issue, it currently looks like the vast majority of you are going through NTT nodes such as the ones I quoted earlier:
For those of you who are seeing this problem, you need to check your test to see if you are going through nodes that end in jp.bb.gin.ntt.net, as in this example trace. The reason for this is that your ISP is sending you to a backbone provider. That backbone provider is sending your connection to Japan on the way to a US server. That’s what the jp in these tests stands for.
We cannot fix this ourselves because it is not our provider. We are still collecting reports to see if we can help work around it or reach out to people, but please keep in mind that this part of the internet is not our responsibility, as much as we know it’s frustrating for you all.
For the time being you should:
- Run a winMTR while you are having problems and see if you are being routed to Japan using the information above. If you are, post it here*
- If you are, you need to report this to a tier 2 or 3 technician with your ISP - complete with a copy of your test. You need to tell them to contact NTT on your behalf to have them fix the routing.
- Use a VPN to work around the issue if it is legal in your country. We can’t walk you through how to set these up, as they are third party software but they are the most common work around for a problem like this.
That should help with the latency while the ISPs work on this.
*If you do NOT go through the Japanese NTT nodes, you are having a different issue and should post your own thread.
That is absolute garbage and YOU KNOW IT Drakuloth. Stop lying and admit that you guys screwed up. This happened after YOUR patch. YOU changed something.
Why in the hell do you guys feel the need to get so cute with selecting what server to play on anyway? If someone is in NA… THEY ONLY PLAY ON NA SERVERS! That is not a difficult concept.
STOP DEFLECTING BLAME FOR A PROBLEM YOU CREATED.
