Seems like you acted just as inappropriately as the other guy. Saying do it in person could easily be seen as a threat. You are not innocent here, both of you should be banned.

I don’t think it matters that it’s a meme because it’s a joke designed to intimidate and scare people who don’t recognize it. At least in this particular context. Which are the classic types of “jokes” bullies engage in the world over.

The OP did start the RL escalation though. Both should take a chat time out, imo.

The problem is how you handled it. That’s what people are disagreeing with. Standing up to bullies is fine, just don’t stoop to their level.

The actual mature thing would’ve been to just block / mute / report them outright. And in the first case where the guy was making fun of others, it’s fine to step up and say something like, “Alright man, come on, we’re all stressed. But let’s chill and stay focused. We can’t win if the team’s divided,” etc. etc.

Granted, most people won’t calm down and sometimes it just makes them worse, but you never fight back or let it get to you, else that just escalates the situation.

Mute the second they get hostile. Trust me, it’ll save you so many headaches.

And if you still feel you need to do something to “fight back,” then simply comfort their victim and let them know they’re doing fine, or whatever. As long as the person feels like they’re not alone, they probably feel less crappy about themselves, making the bully’s words far less powerful.

When dealing with these people the goal is never to win the argument - it’s to stop it from progressing.
