I literally came in expecting nothing and it was so much worse than i could have imagined.
It is still free. It does not matter if you or me bought the game, now it is free and that is what matters.
Yeah, free, like when a restaurant changes from fine dining to all you can eat buffet. But jacks the prices up on all the amenities because now anyone can eat.
Paying full price for a game you were intended to get free skin through events is what we paid for… its ridiculous for you guys to expect old playes to just roll with it and deal with paying 20-40 bucks for single skin additional 10 for BP.
It’s only free if your time has zero value ![]()
After reading through most of this thread, I agree with some arguments.
Yes, the game is free, free updates, free maps and everything else. Which is okay, it even allowed for a larger audience to jump in and play the game because they didn’t want to pay for the game when they weren’t really sure if they’d like it.
This was the case for my friends, when I told them the game is free now, they said “Oh sure, since it’s f2p, can’t hurt to give it a try.” So they did, and they liked it! They still do, which is a happy occurrence, because now my usual circle of friends play overwatch with me.
This is where the good things stop though. My friends and I HATE, the skin shop system. It’s extremely overpriced for what you get, compared to how it was handled before. We don’t have a problem paying money to buy skins. But 19-23 bux per legendary skin is far too much and a disgrace. At least to me it is a disgrace.
Note: We do not have a problem with the battlepass to be honest, it’s pretty okay, but could use the “Buy the battlepass and have the ability to collect enough coins for the next” like in so many other games that do it well.
Now, where does this leave us now with this update?
I felt like it’s a bummer, there is not much you play for anymore, other than making your own fun. Not much rewards to look forward to as a free to play player. (Disclaimer, not a veteran, but I played OW1 during the launching phase.) Every skin is behind a big fat paywall that you can spend on something else with much more value, than a skin that you won’t see anyway, except if you are dead. It’s a tall order.
When I looked at the shop, there was a 4 skin bundle of the event, where the normal price for the bundle is 7600 coins (which is 76 bux in dollars or euro, depending where you are), for this amount of money you can buy an entire new triple A game, which just seems…very extreme to me. Sure you can argue you don’t have to buy that bundle, and it has a discount too. But man, it just feels sad now. ![]()
It would’ve been nice if there was some way to still gain a free lootbox you can open for a chance at a legendary skin. Like a daily/weekly reward or something. Or the free battlepass drops lootboxes here and there. I don’t know, some ideas from the top of my head to make it more rewarding for free to play players. Not everyone on this world has the money to fork over 20 bux for a singular legendary skin. But before I start a philosophical discussion I am going to stop here. You don’t have to reply to me, I merely wanted to have my voice heard, even if it doesn’t ring true.
I am just bummed.
I get it man, I know the feeling.
I read a ton of posts and honestly haven’t seen the “it’s free” argument used in the fashion you describe.
everyone that is trying to hold blizzard accountable and trying to make the game better and calling them out for their sh*t “sequel” game are told to just “dont buy it! its a free game! youre such an untitled or ungrateful brat.”
its literally easy to find those comments… everyone that is trying to hold blizzard accountable and trying to make this game better
So f’ing much this. Blizz can ban me for a refund.
It’s the fact he bought a disc he now that disc doesn’t play the game on the tin.
Ahh yes they could also never update it above ow 1.0.0 og hero map pool, game modes, skins. Is this good enough for you?
They’re not told this though not for fair criticism of the game, in fact I’d say this is the overwhelmingly supported narrative so far, maybe even a overzealous with the criticism.
I’d be willing to wager that I’ve seen more vitriol directed at those who have something good to say about the game than I have towards those who have something critical to say.
There’s also a fine line between “accountability” and “toxicity”. I think I’ve seen more toxicity in the form of directed criticism than I have constructive and thought out criticism.
sure
yea well im just a doomer
Aside from buying the battle pass to get new heroes in order to stay competitve
I guess you do have the option to put yourself at a disadvantage, though…
I bought a chess board and pieces in 1986.
I can still play with it.

You will own nothing and be happy.
Now eat the bugs.
Yes. Still free. New players do not need to pay to play, but cosmetics now cost money.
Most people would be fine with a legendary costing around $6 tops. It’s the excessive price they are putting on the skins that’s the problem.
Legendary Skins and Highlight Intros: $5-6
Rare Skins $2.50
Voice lines and Emotes: $2-3
Sprays, Charms, and the stupid souvenirs should be free via in-game things.
I would imagine in the end Blizzard would make even more money from this.
Imagine this, 1 person paying $20 for a skin while another 10 people passed over it because it was to much OR 11 people paying $5 for that same skin. Oh look, Blizzard just more than doubled their income.
I wish people would stop with the, “We paid $60 for OW1” argument. It’s irrelevant, and really unhelpful in getting Blizzard to ease up on the scummy monetization.
The TOS in OW1 made it pretty clear that they could disrupt service at any point without the need for compensation. This goes as far as shutting the whole game down with no way to play it at all.
Focus instead, on complaining about these ludicrous prices in the shop and not buying anything in an effort to get the prices down.
Yup, I don’t care how many “years” the game has been out, the game should have been kept intact the way it was for OW1 owners, you want the change the gameplay? Fine. But taking away content from OW1 owners is not only shady, but illegal in some places with good consumer laws.
But they didn’t take away content from OW1, they just changed it into a different form. 2CP and its maps are still in the game, but in custom only. All of the old skins/characters are usable in game. Hell, you could still do 6v6 in custom games too if you wanted.
The only thing gone are lootboxes, but those are illegal in a lot of countries now so they didn’t really have a choice but to get rid of them.
