You do realise that some people spent that and more (thousands) for loot boxes, right? Someone had to foot the bill. It’s why OW1 made so much money, preying on people with gambling problems and similar.
Yeah, I never personally bought a loot box either but that did not make them less predatory. The are objectively more so than battle passes or MTX WYSIWYG cosmetics. As a community we needed to stop being selfish and help Blizzard pivot away from exploiting the vulnerable. OW2 needed a new way to generate income, not only as it is entirely free (a bonus over the first), but because legal proceedings were being pursued. Game development, especially continuous GaaS, is expensive and game studios aren’t charities.
It was never a “sequel” in the first place. They just didn’t update the game for 3 years, then updated it all at once, lol.

I’d have to see some proof of that because it honestly sounds ridiculous.
You could open the 10 free loot boxes at the beginning of a holiday event and get 2-3 of the legendary skins if you were lucky enough.
Any time I got unlucky with the free boxes, all I had to do was actually play the game and I’d get almost everything. Anything I missed, I’d just be able to buy the next year when the event came around again.
And that was before I had all the items and was sitting on tens of thousands of coins from all the loot boxes I got after.
In the last few years of OW1 I could just buy every item as soon as an event dropped and still have coins leftover

Didn’t they release missions? This is under the “things they removed” section of your comment. Yeah, it’s not exactly the same as the PvE that they showed they were working on, but they still released PvE.
Um, basically they added tons of new content, changed it to 5v5 (which is better imo and they stated they have NO plans to remove), and now seem to be making enough money to continuously update the game for the foreseeable future.
Overwatch 2 was, from the beginning, basically just an expansion pack masquerading as a sequel.
It’s functionally not any different from how WoW expansions work, just with less content after they scrapped a bunch of stuff.
I think a lot of people would disagree with at least a few of those, but nonetheless even if we take all of those things as the case, I’m not sure how those things make it a sequel.
And dont get me wrong, I’ll be the first to tell people to suck it up because it doesnt matter what the game is called. I’m just not really understanding your rationale.

I remember when people thought loot boxes were a bad system. But I actually got skins for free then.
Now you only get whatever garbage ones they feel like giving and charge out the bum for anything good.

we can play overwatch 1 the exact same way was designed in 2016 launch, ow1 arcade modes came back, you can play the same maps ow1 had, same characters, same abilities, same skins, please, there is no new engine, is another lie from developers, the new engine was being made for pve, no pve, no new engine, ow classic is the proof ow2 is just an update, to make a new engine or change the existing one you need to fully scrap ow1 and start from 0 and do everything again, thats why duke dukem forever took 12 years to be made, they keep changing engines

The only other thing that’s gone I can recall is LFG.
I beat ya to it by 10mins and 10 words 
But I truly do miss LFG. Saves me on nights like this where it’s the final night of the season and I’m trying to fight off the moody edgelords in solo queue.

The SR system is the same, the actual number is just hidden behind a percentage bar.
The monetisation is 10x worse. Could earn everything in OW1 for free. Would take you several thousand years to try to earn everything in OW2.
A lot of new content like Sojourn, Queen and Mauga were supposed to be added to OW1 but were intentionally withheld. Not to mention a lot of new content was scrapped.
5v5 stinky and now 6v6 is coming back.
