Is There a Difference Between Ping vs. Latency?

With the patch that changed Ping to Latency, was it ever mentioned that there’d be consequences with it showing latency as opposed to ping? Is the 20-30ms difference just informational or does it affect gameplay in the regard that it’s higher?

It will always be higher, as it’s a more accurate representation of the actual time it will take to see server responses in-game.

Latency is distance related. So let’s say your in China, playing someone from America. There will be a large delay in what happens onscreen because the actions take a long time to send over the network due to the long distance of travel.

Ping is basically how good your internet is by itself. If you have a bad ping, or high ping, expect stuttering movement, and crappy gameplay overall.

That’s technically the ‘gist’ of it all. I probably made some errors, so feel free to correct me.

Ping accounts for distance as well. There are technical differences in how these metrics are calculated, but the purpose is the same: They measure the travel time for data sent between your client and the server.
