In my very short experience he seems to be heavily picked over other tanks. He feels very strong.
Hog is a crutch pick for low/mid elo players

I see more Mauga, Sigma, Orisa than Hog but heâs out there a lot, yeah

He used often in the lower to mid ranks because of his self-healing tends to do a better job than many Supports in those same ranks. Often times, those Support players will play the role because theyâve noticed its easier to do damage and self-heal with them than in those in the Damage-role.
Heâs also capable of killing most non-Tanks in one shot with his Hook combo; so he can be very disruptive to a lot of team formations (of the few that exist at that level), and most maps played by lower ranks tend to be Escort and Hybrid maps which tend to keep engagement ranges around 20 meters; which is the typical and optimal range for most Tanks, including Roadhog.

Itâs just the simple response to âheals are bad and dps are badâ.
Just do everything yourself. And with the current balance it actually works, Hog can do ridiculous things.
I donât think Roadhog is the most popular tank, but I do think heâs maybe top 3. Reinhardt and D.Va are both extremely popular. Anytime you see either one of those without a high pick rate it isnât because people donât like playing them but because they are bad. If they are even remotely good (like even barely viable) then those are the most played usually.
Hog I think is #3. And you can tell this from not only playtime in game but things like Reddit and um⊠certain art.
But as we get more tanks, this gets diluted a bit. Despite how much the community hates them, Mauga seems to be popular. Hated, but also loved in a paradoxical way. And Domina seems to be getting a following. Iâm sure DMon will be popular once sheâs released.
Every tank has a group of people that hate them. But not every tank has a significant group of hardcore fans.
Tanks that have relatively large fan bases that outnumber their haters: Rein, D.Va, Roadhog, Mauga, Doom, Winston, Domina, Ram, and Queen. Some of these tanks have people who truly despise them but they still have a lot of extremely loyal players. There are a few tanks in this group I personally hate. Roadhog is one of them.
Tanks that have a lot more haters than lovers (some unfairly): Hazard, Orisa, Sigma, Ball, and Zarya. These just donât have a ton of actual mains. Sigma probably has the largest number of mains here but itâs just because heâs strong not because heâs beloved. Orisa gets a lot more hate than she deserves IMO, but she still hasnât got a lot of true mains. I personally love Orisa, but I am in a minority on that.

Seems he is 5th in both ranked and qp. Surprised ram of all Heroes is picked more.
700 health, gun that can instantly kill any hero under the tank, Hook combo insta kill, self healing damage reduction, ult that shreds shields, and very generous displacement tool.
Take your pick. No other tank has that much.
Oh I wasnât saying he was 3rd most picked but 3rd most popular. Those things can correlate but they arenât exactly the same. And I canât really prove popularity but letâs just say that someone cursed me with the knowledge that he is the most searched hero on certain sites. I have no idea why. I threw up in my mouth a little learning that information.

Hes a pubstomper in metal ranks. Above that you barely see him and he becomes just a liability as an ult battery and get deleted so fast. As the mmr get sweatier you mostly see zarya,rein,hazard, domina which is way more tedious to play against than hog.
Really, because I am mid elo and I never see anyone switch TO hog. The more usual pattern is someone starts on hog but after 1-2 fights switches off because the entire enemy team has switched to counter.
Mauga, Orisa, Zarya and DVa are much more clutch picks at mid elo.
he has a level of solo carry potential that not many tanks are capable of reaching
his self-sufficient nature is also a big draw for people who dont have much faith in their teammates

This, the amount of games Iâve been sruck with some Mercy/Cat/Moira/LW combo i just lock hog and heal myself
I donât think heâs the most popular, but he is a crutch pick in most ranks. Heâs also not doing bad in GM (exactly at 50% winrate as of writing this post).
Hopefully they dial down his sustain in the mid-season patch.
