Why do people keep on saying dota is a moba or something similar to that? I play dota, league, hots, and smite. But i dont see why poeple keep comparing them. I alwasy though of overwatch as a hero based shooter not a moba?
Genuine question

no ow is not a moba, it is a hero shooter.
hero shooter but MAYBE the other hero shooter competing with it is kind of a moba… that being paladins. do you think paladins leans more to the moba side? compared to overwatch?
It’s not a MOBA
Because people were struggling to describe the abilities and archetypes in OW which weren’t common to the tactical shooters and battle royales they were used to. So they latched on to the MOBA descriptor as it that game type sees similar abilities and archetypes.
MOBA? Mister Olaf’s Baked Apple?
I’ve never really understood it either; classes and abilities in shooters are not new things and show up in pretty much every genre. The vast majority of mechanics that define mobas just don’t seem to exist here.
I can only infer that people describing it as moba-like either specifically came from mobas, or that it has to do with how people are looking at and thinking about the relative duration and level of organization in team fights in Overwatch and how that may be, at least at times, more similar to team fights in mobas rather than common popular shooters.
Ofc it’s not a MOBA, but it shares principles from one.
You have abilities, ultimates, Ressource management.
On most maps 3 lanes to attack or defend on etc.
It’s somewhat inspired from MOBAs (emphasis on abilities, rather than weapons/tools like older hero shooters) but it’s not one itself. There’s no shop, skill trees, minor objectives, minions, etc.
Some players will say it is in order to argue that mechanical skill should not be as impactful as it is.
Much more non-FPS elements of OW stem from MMORPG(wOW) rather than MOBA imo, but both are heavily influenced by RPG so it’s somewhat interchangeable and people today are more familiar with MOBA, esp. when it’s PvP imo.
But I think OW is a shooter after all, cause the game itself doesn’t have much support for RPG gameplay. It has very static environment, only 2 very simple abilities, no items and no character progression. OW has everything and more when you approach the game as FPS, but if you approach OW as MOBA, it’s just a degenerate mobile MOBA for 7 yrs old kids.
OW has nothing in common with MOBAs. No lanes, no creeps, no items, no leveling, no builds.
Its not a moba, but its inspired by one. You can sorta tell with some of the level designs literally having lanes and such.
I’m assuming you meant overwatch here
Nah, DOTA isn’t a moba.
I don’t think they know what a MOBA is.
no its not a moba, thankfully
overwatch 1 was a hero shooter
overwatch 2 is neither a moba nor a hero shooter, it is a bland boring basic fps and nothing more
I believe a MOBA requires minions, towers, bases, leveling systems, farming systems, etc. If a game like DOTA or LOL were pure PVP matches or even with some OW-like Objective game modes without those other features I listed, would they still be MOBAs?
Its a shooter with MOBA elements, not a MOBA in itself. though with how heroes are being designed as of late it is leaning a lot more towards its MOBA elements so I’m guessing that were the notion of it being a MOBA is coming from.
I think OW2 is a fighting game. There’s punching and kicking so I’m not wrong.
