Is matchmaking really fair?

Than why does Gold plat and Diamond exist. Make one rank and be done with it. Also, I doubt Q’s would increase. Simply because that is the largest pool of players. Masters+ have that problem. Simply because they are 1% of the population.

Either they have time to play or they don’t. If they’re just sitting there staring at the queue screen, that’s what we call a skill issue.

To have people have some measure of their “progress”. I would love to think I’m actually 2-3 ranks above silver… but really it’s just I’m an infinitesimally small bit better at random aspects of the game. Degrees within medals are cosmetic mostly. We all kinda play the same.

… OK. I’m sure you are the best at waiting, but lots of gamers, especially the F2P crowd do NOT have patience for queue times. And you can tell them to get better at it all you like, they’ll just move on to other games and the queue times will get even WORSE. What are you on about? Git gud at waiting? You need people to play against or the games won’t happen and that involves at least a mildly broad brush to keep those queues in acceptable levels for your average player.

You’re basically admitting it’s a time waster. So really It’s Bronze- Early Diamond. Mid Diamond-T500.

Is that supposed to be wide?

They don’t. They get boosted by the broken anti smurf system and slowly fall back down

Or, y’know, T500

Sure buddy. Gotta love the conspiracy theories. My personal favorite? Ryujin is gonna steal Sayeon’s Godling deal. It doesn’t make any sense but it would be cool, right?

There’s probably 2000sr difference between me playing at peak versus me playing while taking a phone call. Things happen. I can’t stress about the matchmaker

My dog jumping on the couch looking for attention from me can easily cause a death which can so easily cause us gamers to throw the match because they think I’m terrible. It’s all kinda funny

People like seeing “progress” even when that progress is meaningless or minor. If you call that a waste of time then ok… I didn’t make the system, I just observe. However nearly any competitive game ladder is like that. Lower ranks really don’t have much difference and there’s usually a cutoff point where the “real” competition starts and your rank actually reflects your “tier” of skill.

They start you relatively low on your scale, you feel good as you move up, and then you hit your wall at the top of your current skill and the actual drive to improve kicks in. It’s and engagement mechanic of the oldest type.

If you don’t like it then take it up with the devs as some sort of argument for abolishing the medals, but a lot of people do not want to hear it or would actually miss their little “improvements”.

No. I don’t care. But skill is basically determined by the devs. Not really you.

Here’s a few problems I see with Matchmaking:

  1. EITHER people aren’t using the Report feature enough to get rid of bad actors OR Blizzard has the metrics set too low for bad actors to get banned.
  2. New accounts and players that obviously have zero idea of how to play the game at all do not start low enough as a baseline. While new accounts of experienced players adjust upward too slowly.
  3. The match spread can be pretty lopsided. The favored vs. unfavored adjustments to rank do not adequately reflect the size of the gap.
  4. I think stadium is pulling a large amount of the player base out of competitive causing wider gaps to fill games.
  5. Tanks are still a pressure role in 5 v 5, and the better tank team is going to win a lot higher percentage than Blizzard calculates in their who’s favored metrics.

You’re welcome to your opinion as well, I don’t know what their outlook on the medals is but I know what I’ve seen time and time again in every competitive online game with “ranks” ever. Most people can move up and down through the medal ranks at will with minor improvements or slight changes of tactics and mostly just throwing time at it, but you hit the last few tiers and you have to practice very specific things and do it a lot to move anywhere.

The matchmaker will NEVER be fair because smurfing is now unlimited and free. It’s literally impossible for the matchmaker to actually function properly.

This is driving away paying customers in favor of those who pay nothing.

Ok so what does MMR covers?
I kinda research about how it works and as far as I know it is simply win rate based.
Does it considers aiming? How good you are with every hero and their abilities? your criteria to counter pick and decision making? Because all of that is crucial in gameplay.

I took another screeshot of my last match.

Look at the junkrat, I censored his name for integrity reasons, but does his stats looks balanced or similar/equitative with the rest of the players? Same happened like 2 match before that one with a soldier, but worst than that, he left.

Anyways it still results frustrating that you don’t feel rewarded for your personal progress.

I wonder how many smurf account are down there in Bronze and Silver.

If you look at the market for new accounts, comp ready you see all 3 roles bronze for 30$ and none settled for around 5-10$
There is definitely a good demand for these.

I’m so sick of reading this sort of excuse, “it’s nothing extraordinary”…

Why even HAVE those ranks if everyone just thinks they are the same?
I had a game this weekend that was BRONZE TO DIAMOND. Honestly the game may as well remove all ranks under Masters at this point and make us a bag of a mixed lollies.

Stop justifying this garbage seriously, it’s asinine :sob:

Nowhere did I say i think the ranks are the same. No idea why you’d think that either.

That spread is a bit over one rank size, which would be 5 div, so it is nothing extraordinary.

You get bronze to diamond lobbies if you’re in open queue or wide grouped. If you dont want those, stick to 5v5 rq and narrow groups.

I mean, the devs think Gold, Plat, and Diamond are the same. Since they allow them to group.

That doesnt follow though.

Narrow groups in gold are 5 divisions and actually in all those ranks. So if gold groups with diamond they’re in wide group and treated different.

This is in 5v5 rq. Open queue is treated different because it has lack of players.
e.g. in open queue grouping is not restricted etc because there arent enough players to keep queue times low otherwise.

It’s only based on your wins and losses. Your rank mirrors your mmr, so what you see after match your rank change your mmr is changing the equivalent amount in the background.

Basically to rank up in ow you have to actually improve so your “average” gameplay is consistently better than before.
And also better than others around your rank. Keep in mind, everyone is constantly improving in the game alongside you. The whole playerbase is gradually getting better and better.

Unlike some games that just reward playing more over actually improving, ow doesnt do that.

It was 5v5 RQ. I am Gold 2 and the friend I was playing with is Plat. We usually never have issues, but as every season progresses the match maker gets noticeably worse.
