I feel like things like this, that episode of Golden Girls that was removed for something that wasn’t even blackface, are things that… aren’t really progressive? Like instead of fighting against systematic racism and brutality from people in power, we get things that - in the long run - don’t actually matter.
Blizzard could censor racial slurs - or better yet, punish people who do say them. But instead we get this action, which changes nothing about rampant racism in this game - and, it’s on par with other actions of the same caliber that don’t address the same issue at hand.
I hope I make sense.
EDIT: I understand the removal of things created with racism in mind - especially characters, toys and mascots of earlier times. But I don’t mean those things, sorry… I’m not American, but the police in my country aren’t known for treating our indigenous people fantastically, so I guess I understand in some way?
Yep. I love westerns and cowboys, any rational person would not have such a big issue with this but the sad reality is some people on here are racist and/or very ignorant and it unfortunately shows far too often.
Your guess is as good as anyone. I’ve already seen triangles as “racist,” eagles as “racist,” even Abraham Lincoln… the guy who freed the slaves as “racist.” But what is it really all about? Is it about race? No. The majority of people actually think like you do. It’s really just about power and control. Race is the justification used to garner support from gullible individuals that would otherwise be against it.
You know I think it’s time we take back the swastika. Screw Naz1s, let’s make a game where Symmetra battles omnic Hitl3r to take it back
To your point, this is why I don’t get all up in the old woman’s face about her swastika I occasionally see in her house as I walk past. Also why I wouldn’t get up in the face of a skin head if they were doing the same… In one scenario, it’s clear what the reason is behind the swastika (I try and maintain a healthy dislike of all religions but everyone should be free to do as the like so long as it doesn’t require sacrifices/etc).
In the latter, I don’t wanna get the noose/knife from Grand Wizard Lynch McKlan, so I’ll find some authority with guns to do my talking for me >_>
Are you really? Because the hangman’s noose is known as a hate symbol much like the swastika. This is neither a new thing or an association of times long past. They hanged effigies of Obama when he was elected. Several black people were hanged after the BLM protests started. The hangman’s noose has long had an EXTREMELY negative association due to the rampant lynchings of black people and the intentional use of the noose as a symbol of hate to terrorize and intimidate black people. The lynching of black people is, BY FAR, the most prominent association with the hangman’s noose in America.
Sounds like you aren’t familiar with anything.
And I say it’s good that it’s gone. Now what?
This is a load of bullcrap. It has been proven time and time again that NOT bringing up racism does NOT stop racism from existing.
The noose has an extremely violent, racist history in the Us. Even today black protesters end up with them hanging in their yards. Blizzard is a us based company. Its not exactly shocking they’d want to avoid that publicity during these times.
Well, I’m not black but I’ve got no connections or even much of an interest in the Wild West and I’m pretty ambivalent. I’m just not a huge fan of the way people take things out of context, put them in a new context and bam racist/offensive. On the other hand if people were actually bothered by it (I hate the word triggered) than I guess whatever get rid of it, but if we get rid of everything that can be interpreted as offensive…
I like it when it’s nice and simple, like getting rid of statues (stick them in a museum perhaps) of confederate generals cos they were fighting for a separatist nation bent on slavery or arguably more useful, removing some of the worst elements of the police force and actually have an independent group reviewing their performance with some teeth (I don’t think disbanding them is a realistic or even helpful solution)
Dunno most likely no correct answer. It’s either too high a bar or you end up with a tyranny of the majority scenario (or at least that’s how it seem from those that find it offensive).
That’s why I personally try to take things in whatever context they’re put in buuuuut if something I’m doing genuinely bothers someone I’ll generally stop cos, like, why bother people when you don’t have too on the flip side, will it end up being that everything I say/do is the worst cos I’m a cis white male and I’m not checking my privilege enough I’m a pretty left leaning guy in Australia and the way people take offence (when none is clearly meant) at everything and demand it must be changed just seems crazy to me.
Yes, you can report them. I don’t know if audio or a text-to-speech of the audio is saved but you can absolutely report them for abusive chat anyway. You can add in the comment that it was over voice chat. Bans are automated anyway, and given out when the number of reports exceeds a certain threshold, so anyone behaving that way regularly will get banned swiftly if people make a habit of reporting them.
Personally, I’ve never seen anyone using the spray in a racist manner or accompanied with racist speech. I’ve personally only come across overtly racist speech a couple of times, once because someone ‘sounded black’ in the chat, and once just unsolicited racist humor.
I do, however, come across toxic behavior in general daily and make extensive use of the report button, including the cases of racist language of course.
The thing is, everything offends at least some people. The level of offensiveness varies with each case and even then, can change over time. Take for example the Washington Redskins which have been under pressure to change their name in recent years. 4 years ago when polled, 9 out of 10 Native Americans did NOT find the name offensive. 3 years later, that level decreased to 68%. Fast forward just 1 more year and it decreased to 51%. So what exactly changed to warrant the change in perception? The name & logo did not. But the growing trend has forced ownership to scrap the name despite previously saying they would never do it.
And even if you take race off the table you can just look at these forums as sort of a microcosm for society as a whole. Any decision the devs make regarding the game is met with some sort of criticism or backlash. Those with the loudest voices get heard, regardless of whether they are in the majority or even right.
But if someone shares a different opinion on the matter, guess what, they get silenced by you know who. But hey, it’s nothing new in this forum. This place has been plagued by these types of people since forever.
Nice try flipping everything I said to make the racists victims you people are too predictable i didnt even report this post as theres nothing here worth taking down except the banning of some of these people.
The sprays was mainly used for the people who wanted to tell the enemy that they killed to go “off themselves” because they are better, it’s basically the silent way of saying KYS, i’m glad they got rid of it, because it’s lost it’s actual intention, and people just want to make suicide jokes and spray it on your dead body while they teabag you.
Blizzard removed it because it would’ve been bad PR on their side, especially with them coming out with a sequel in 1-2 years, and with the way politics is right now.
