In lore, is every match the last mission?

This is just a bit confusing to me. Some of the old hero’s like Soldier and Ana say “my final mission..” as if the match ur playing right now is their last mission ever

Note: sorry its so d*mn long, i got into a ramble lol.

Please feel free to bring up some more lines from them that say this, but the only one I can think of is Soldier’s “One more mission…sigh”, which kind of always felt like less of a node to this actually being a mission and more a poorly delivered joke about how people always say “just one more thing” and then you’re still on one more thing 20 things later lol. Or just him being exasperated and trying to convince himself that this really is his last mission.

I think Ana had a line similar, “One more mission. Lets get this done.” or something like that. To which I always attributed to her talking about how she was tying up loose ends in egypt for a while, finally being done with Soldier’s bullsh*t (which has express, post split voicelines now). Although she had been planning to retire in full the new problems have pulled her back into the middle of things again, to which she has more voicelines about how “this is why [she] cant retire.”

This is all to say that I dont think their “last mission” lines are really them calling it their final mission, but more attributed to them TRYING, or even hoping, to let it be a last mission to close out a specific chapter, even if its not actually their last time fighting for people. I dont think the matches are even remotely about being lore accurate missions (otherwise they would force the teams into picking either Talon members/allies or Overwatch members/allies) and are more just sh*t happening because thats kinda how the game works. Though a Talon vs Overwatch game mode where you pick the faction to play as would be fun, they’ve done similar modes before with the starwatch event, picking the empire or the rebellion and getting specific hero options depending on the choice, so it wouldnt be impossible.

I don’t think ingame voice lines and interactions are the true canon but more like “what ifs”. It wouldn’t make sense either that Winston decides to kill Tracer and Brig for example.

Or that Tracer escords some kind of bomb into the omnic disctrict in London.

The PVP isn’t canon. The payload push, capture point, push bot, whatever map/mode, the PVP matches are not canon.
It’s just set in canon location and canon settings, that’s it.

Some voicelines / interactions reflect the character and how they would react if put on the same team together, but everything are more “what if’s”.

Ive always wondered what the OW matches really are: simulations? Training? Some kind of VR experience?

Nothing. It’s a PvP game, that’s really it.

well….thats not totally true. The payloads on Junkertown, King’s row, Paraiso, and a few others ARE canon events, the EMP on kings row and the treasure bomb pile especially are cannon. I’m pretty sure the dorado one is too. I’m pretty sure most of the maps are canonically accurate mission/conflict locations. while the people on the missions arent canon, the places are, at least to some degree. and the TS-1 is also a canon machine, if not entirely accurate for the maps theyre put on. so the gameplay aspect is canon to some minor degree, and its kinda fun to pretend they matches are more important than they actually are sometimes.

I do sometimes wish the barricades in push had a bit more theming because, while I like the game mode, it’s very strange conceptually lore-wise compared to the other modes.

Locations are canon, but gameplay on the missions (pushing payloads and stuff) are not canon missions.
There are some canon setting on those maps/payloads, but the only canon missions are the story mode ones.
