Imagine if Snipers wouldn't exist

That’s not a telegraph however.

Hanzo lighting up during storm arrows is a telegraph.

Doomfist screaming, glowing like a tree, and whirring like a vacuum cleaner is a telegraph.

Heroes calling out their ultimate line before hand, is a telegraph.

Imagine if Mccree hit Q, then didn’t glow red, didn’t say a thing, and then insta killed everyone during his ult.

Now imagine I’d be here telling you “that’s ok”.

“You just needed game sense

“You could see him. that was your telegraph”.

Telegraphs and game sense aren’t the same thing.

Not haphazardly jumping a corner is one thing.

Being a Jedi reading the future is another.

Fair enough telegraph in this sense would be the red line trail

although it doesn’t take long before you can see what the enemy team is, play cautiously until you can confirm they have a widow or not

The red line that happens after your dead?

A telegraph would be seeing the redline before hand- like the snipers do during the archive events.

Only if you get hit~

It is possible to know there is a widow before she even shoots is my point anyway

Sometimes I get a feeling that people on these forums treat snipers like Sombra:
Aw I got hacked, better go afk
Aw they got a sniper, better stay in the open with no cover and stop moving

It’s been a few minutes Chief- chill.

I saw it the first time. I saw it the second time.

I’ve got multiple people responding to me, and I can only type so fast on my touch screen cell phone while dealing with the other people I was initially more involved with.

Your response that “people want it” is nice- but doesn’t really justify why we have to have it. Plenty of things have been altered that some players “wanted”, because the game ultimately didn’t need them despite their being some players who did.

Its important to look at why things like those were changed, and of those reasons are applicable here.

We’ve been getting a LOT of well supported threads lately questioning the “need” for this specific mechanic. It’s not unreasonable to question why, if at all, we need this mechanic or if the game would be better as a whole without it (or altered on some way) considering the growing community concern over it.

You press Tab.
You see a sniper.
You pick a counter.
What counter? Shields, dive tanks, flankers.

But this is not just a “thing”. This is not one skill. Snipers are an entire large part of gameplay, both playing for and against them is a huge addition to the game. You don’t just suggest removing a thing. You suggest removing a whole layer of gameplay just because… why, again?

Too bad a good Widow can just counter her counters with her mobility then, huh?

Too bad anyone being good can counter his counters.
She probably can shoot through shields too, amirite?
Respect sniper LoS.
Her mobility is not infinite. She’s almost stationary when she’s scoped.
Also, do you forget how to move when you play against snipers? Lmao.

I’ll admit this thread is more unique in that it’s talking about the removal of snipers as a whole (however it’s not my thread and I don’t explicitly agree with the sentiment presented in the OP).

Most don’t go this far

And I don’t myself-

Which is why I’ve clarified so a few times along the way.

But allow me to do so again:

I’m not against snipers.

Nor am I even against one shots, quite the contrary I’m all for them

Personally however I’m against un telegraphed one shots (within the context of overwatch). One shots without more apparent precursors than “this character had unobstructed LoS on someone for .1 of a second”.

As for why?

Because of what overwatch presents itself to be, admittedly to me.

Yes it’s a shooter. Yes shooters have snipers. But overwatch is also a hero based game built around monitoring resources, both friendly and opposition, capitalizing on those resources advantages or disadvantages, and having complex hero fights built around those interactions.

It’s has what is often described as a “mobaesque” feel because of this (albeit without the lanes, towers, forts, etc. just straight pvp hero goodness”)

Un telegraphed deletes, for many players, goes against this concept of heroes “trading” and responding to abilities and resources (largely by limiting the appreciable response window).

To be more clear on the matter:

Ashe is I feel, power wise, more in line with what snipers could and “should” have been in this game. She’s quite powerful (hell one of the highest winning heroes in the game), but she doesn’t rely explicitly on oneshots to do so.

She’s a very powerful marksman with auxiliary abilities that augment her kit.

If I’d had my way, this is where I would’ve gone with widow.

Give her similar base RoF and damage- no extra crit multiplier, burn maintained the lack of fall off. then give her abilities that augment her “sniper” qualities.

I’d even argue to give her a OHKO mechanic- but with some degree of telegraphing. In the vein of what was discussed before, a temporary buff similar to storm arrow that telegraphs slightly, but hugely augments her power for the duration of. Give her “magnum” ammo, doing 130-140 per shot for the duration of, during which she has a red laser sight similar to those of the snipers in the archive events.

Give her scope 2 zooms, a small zoom similar to ashes ADS, then a closer zoom similar to now, with a click quickly cycling between all the modes.

For an ultimate- keep her thermal sights, but for the duration of allow her (and only need her) to see a new vulnerable spot in the chest of her targets representing the heart. During her ult allow chest shots to have their own crit multiplier, around 1.5c or so. Augmenting her easy “consistent” damage during her ult, while still rewarding and encouraging headshots.

Still a powerful sniper. Still capable of one shots. A better ultimate. Better situational awareness possibilities with a dual magnification scope. Etc.

While I get your point, I can tell from experience that ANY kind of telegraph is not going to work properly on a sniper like Widow.

Hanzo is a terrible example here at all. He has telegraphed ability, but not the one that oneshots. His oneshot arrows, though, not only untelegraphed, but WRONGLY DISPLAYED. His arrow can pass you by half a meter on your screen, but headshot you on his screen. And now you’re dead from something you didn’t even tried to dodge.

As to Widow… she is a long range sniper. If you give her OHKOs a telegraph like glowing weapon - no one will ever see it, too far away. If you give her a telegraph like laser sight in PVE modes - it will make her useless, completely. People will use the numerous arsenal of escape abilities and shields they have the moment they see it and just wait it out.

I don’t see a reasonable way to telegraph it.

what does this mean this is so cryptic i

Are you out of your mind, can you imagine how summer would be infested with insects without spiders? I always leave them in the house, you never know they might eat the freaking mosquitos that are far more annoying

Wdym? Spiders are good bois

If snipers don’t exist in this game? Simple, people will be back to complain about flankers instead.

If all of them are gone? I guess heroes like McCree, Bastion, Torb, Mei etc will be ask for deletion next.

Imagine for a minute… Pharmercy in every match unable to be kept in check.

DVA, Winston, Genji etc are all can easily catch up to widowmaker even after she used her grappling hook.

DVA booster has half the cooldown of grappling hook, similar to winston (with almost half a cd), and genji wall climb has no cd.

That’s funny because doing that as Zen is impossible. There is no one-shot.

There is a Widowmaker one-shot, though.

Imagine complaining about snipers in a FPS game in 2019. One specific game with counters to it besides making an Eco round and getting an AWP yourself.

Dont need imagination, just load OW US forums.
