Oh no its way deeper than that. The game is pooped from a fundamental level. Fixing it would require making it a completely different game.

This is his third meta, deathball in season 2, goats but then was replaced with Winston because he was kinda weak, and now with a double shield but then again only sometimes. Other times Orisa and Sig.
He’s a very flexible hero. Not at all a must pick.
Also you may make anything sound boring by doing that, “this meta is boring, it’s just a gorilla jumping”.

He wasn’t total garbage the whole time, he had his moments. This revisionist history where he was “bad” the whole time after Moira / Brig is just wrong.

Mei/Reaper with Double Shield was literally just meta and it was terrible
if only the devs stop doing that with their balance changes causing hitscans - sombra - bastion + shimadas + rein + ana to nearly always be staple picks…

Shooting stereotype OW gameplay is still infinitely better than say, a Moira or Brig or Mercy or Mei Meta.
I don’t really care about the meta, but the matchmaking changes they’ve made have ruined the game for me personally. I can be tanking to GMs in an intense sweaty game and then after winning those games suddenly tank for plats or even golds while my opponents are babies too (which is boring and unchallenging = ruined) or for some reason my opponents can still be my MMR while my teammates are babies (which is struggling, stomping and frustrating = ruined). I can count the number of enjoyable games I’ve had as a tank during last weeks with my fingers. It’s just been awful
i have a simple solution…dont play the meta…and play what you enjoy…

To people saying all these other heroes were meta and it was terrible what do you exactly want? If other heroes cant have a share of meta then OW is a failed game (partly true). It cant all be shields with hitscans and flankers.
Everything is too damn niche in this game besides 8 heroes.
Genji has always maintained a high pick-rate regardless of his meta status because a lot of people find him an incredibly fun hero to play as.
Also, correct me if I’m wrong, but summer 2018 was a between meta phase, the shift from dive/double-sniper to GOATS was still in effect. It’s natural for some characters to see higher playtime when the meta hasn’t had a chance to settle.
He wasn’t total garbage because his ult has one of the highest potentials in the game. His game outside of that was very sub-par though and was regularly outshone by other DPS heroes, who require much less resources from their team to make them effective.
Game sucks right now. Period. That’s what happens when players on certain roles are marginalized and others laugh all the way to the bank. That secret Discord really opened my eyes. It feels like it’s a good ol’ boys club, and we ain’t in it.

Yes, but you notice that his HIGHEST pick rate is in GM here. So it has nothing to do with overall popularity.
Hanzo for instance has a higher overall pick rate, but didn’t have the same GM pick rate as Genji.

Yes, Stronger ones in GM tend to be picked, it is a time where the meta isn’t forcing hero picks, so it falls back to pure strength.
Which is TOTALLY part of strength. If you have a strong ult and can carry with it, you are not garbage.
I’m not arguing that he wasn’t weak before this last set of buffs were put in. I am saying that to say he was garbage the whole time is not just totally wrong, it is provably wrong.
He wasn’t just a high pick in GM for DPS, he was literally the MOST picked in GM for DPS.

Except Ashe, all the hitscan’s winrates are below avg apart from Widow’s in GM. Ashe doesn’t win a lot at all ranks because she’s hitscan, it’s TnT/BoB.
Stats suggest either McCree is dirt tier or massively overpicked on ladder, with the avg player picking McCree at all ranks losing more than if they had picked pretty much any other hero. Players just have a rather strong preference for him.
