Hey, I play Overwatch in Darwin, Australia and understand that the Australian server is currently located in Sydney. Usually I play at 72ms but for some reason it’s currently sitting on a steady 180ms. There are no lag spikes, I use NBN and from what I understand there’s no issues with my internet provider. This is really random since nothing has changed since yesterday. I’m still connecting to Australian games so the server seems to be correct.

We’ve seen some reports of higher latency on iiNet Limited/Internode on your area, and it looks like that’s what you’re using at the moment. I’ve updated your thread to reflect this. Can you help us identify the cause by running a WinMTR test which catches a disconnection? You want to restart the test every match until you catch one of these higherproblems. Once you’ve caught one red handed, run the test for about 5 more minutes. This will let us look for problems between your house and our servers which may cause this.
If you have problems with posting it due to a link error, go ahead and copy paste this into your next post, and replace “WinMTR goes here” with your test.

As someone who’s also having this issue, the WinMTR tests are timing out after the 7th hop for me - But a traceroute ran on my mobile phone shows clearly that the connection is diverting to the states before going to the Sydney server.
Also there’s no disconnections at all, just a high ping as if we’re being placed on US servers.
These issues are not present in Diablo 3 or World of Warcraft Sydney servers.

EDIT : Here’s a WinMTR showing what I mean - I only had one server yesterday that was showing me an Amazon server in a traceroute around the 17th hop - The server was 54.240.192.109 - I’ve since tried 4-5 IP’s but always get this result

I am also experiencing high latency with Internode from Brisbane. Usually a very steady 45ms but now a very steady 160ms. I’m not receiving disconnections, just high latency.

--------------------I don’t think this is limited to iinet / internode. I’ve had friends on Optus and Aussie broadband report identical issues yesterday afternoon. He confirmed WoW was fine.
I’m getting the same problem today, but I’m iinet / inode - I opened the network graph and used a traceroute to the server listed:

Since that point, high latency has been in every game I’ve joined (4 games)

I’m with Internode in Sydney, below is my WinMTR output when playing on a server with IP 54.79.111.170
I called Internode last night after I’d started experiencing high ping yesterday afternoon and they said there was no problem – and obviously ping tests to their name servers and google etc showed around 3-10 ping with my NBN connection.
I did find a thread on Whirlpool about it that indicates the problem is with Amazon’s AWS infrastructure (or the routes to it), google “Horrible ping to Game Server in Sydney” (I can’t include a link here)
So this means all game servers using AWS may have the same issue. I can confirm that both Overwatch and Battlefield V had me at pings from 150-200 since this issue began.

Interesting find - I might start a 14 day trial with the ping software they suggested to route around the issue until it’s resolved
I’ve called Internode and asked them to forward the issue to their network team, and emailed support with the results of tracert and links to these forum threads.
A devops mate of mine informs me that TPG and AWS servers reside in the same data centre in Ultimo Sydney.

ping is steady 150+ where it used to be <50ms

Still having problems. Internode, ADSL2 (no NBN here), lower Blue Mountains West of Sydney. Normally 40ms, but this weekend every single match has been about 150ms. No disconnections or lag spikes that I’ve observed, just an abnormally high ping while playing.

Same here, Internode ADSL2 in ACT. Constantly between 160-180 ping in any mode the last two days.

Same here in adelaide asdl 2. When i contacted internode and showed them tracetrs they just brushed it off saying it isnt their problem 
My temp solution atm is to use mudfish vpn when playing OW and just selecting an Adelaide or Sydney based node

Same here with Iinet in Brisbane. Usually 30-40 ms but up around 140-150ms the last couple of days. Using a sydney vpn server works for me tho. Getting 32ms in overwatch with my vpn on.

Can confirm that using a Sydney VPN works for me - takes it back down to 40-50ms.
Glad to hear that y’all are able to get around this with a VPN. This is something we’re still gathering info for though we don’t currently have a timeframe on a resolution.
