I want to turn off the "Defeat" announcement, forever

We can’t even use the word filter system to quickly punish idiots who use slurs, so sadly I don’t think it’ll happen. :pensive:

I want to replace Athena with The Administrator from TF2.

I love how instead of defeat she says “YOU FAILED!”

If your team gets wiped she’ll say “HOW COULD YOU ALL DIE AT ONCE?”

Other than it being a kick while you’re already down… having more choice is always a good thing. We could also turn off the Victory announcement too.

It doesn’t say “YOU SUCK” or “LOSERS HAHAAAAAA!” It just says Defeat. As in loss in a contest.

If you can’t stand confirmation of that, again, maybe don’t play competitive games.

Generally I am for more options and choice, but there are fiddly points like this that I really question how far that philosophy should be expected to carry.

The idea that the game is at fault for “rubbing in” the fact you lost, when … well… you lost and it’s within seconds of you losing and then not again unless you look at a recording or you lose again, is extremely sad to me. Enjoy your wins, accept your losses.

If you want to get technical about it then it’s due to the amount of loss streaks. You can win 3 games then lose 3 or go on an extreme downward spiral of ~10 games due to how the matchmaker organizes games. It would be fine if you bounced between losing and winning but the loss streaks make it far less tolerable.

Negative emotions tend to stick with people far more than positive ones and too much negative reinforcement can be bad for ones mental health. Even if it’s something as simple as a game saying “defeat” - when you hear it 10 times in a row it can’t be good.

Losing streaks aren’t part of the design. Preventing them would be intentional manipulation. They should make you seesaw back and forth so that multiple losses don’t happen?

Again, accept you’re going to lose. Accept you may even lose a lot… or stop playing games where that can happen.

Every part of that screen is tailored to push the idea that the loss is entirely your fault and/or you never had a chance in the first place.

Whereas the victory screen pushes the idea that the win is entirely due to your brilliance and/or the opponent had no chance in the first place.

“I don’t think it’s that way at all because question mark. Prove me wrong.”

How so?
The defeat screen says defeat. That’s it. It doesn’t say “because of you”, it doesn’t show you any sort of quantifiable measurable comparison with your teammates or the other team. just Defeat. How so?

I gave you several examples of how it’s not. please give me some of how it is or are you just going to rely on “because you can’t understand how much that word persecutes me”?

Yeah but think about it, in “real sports” whether it’s high school or professional, when a game ends a big sign doesn’t pop out in front of the losing team and saying “DEFEAT.” I think a lot of people would have a problem with that. Like, they know they lost. What is logical purpose of telling them that?

Some might take the same issue with say a band playing a victory song loudly and all their fans cheering and maybe the stadium erupting in the winners colors and in the case of more major organizations the “SPORTSTEAM WINS” on the scoreboard and colored confetti?

What is the logical problem with confirming you lost? it’s not a logic thing, it’s an emotional problem and extremely subjective. Logically it’s fine to have a definitive result on your screen. There is no question as to the outcome. If you lost you lost and the screen says you lose. If you win, the opposite. There’s like a 3-5 second screen and 15-20 seconds of metrics if you care to stick around and read them all. None of it is absolutely necessary, but it’s part of a contest. Winning should feel better than losing. Losing should be undesirable.

So you just confirmed there’s no logical purpose in the “defeat” announcement.

(Please keep in mind, I’m not advocating for its removal or for keeping it. Like most things in life, [especially politics], I don’t choose sides or even care. I just point out fallacies.)

Anything?

3000 SR, take it or leave it.

I confirmed there’s no logical reason to remove it. Logically it’s fine. It’s there to make sure you understand the outcome and is function focused to do so.

Does it need to be super flashy? Not particularly, Does it need to SAY “DEFEAT” in audio to make sure that even if you are illiterate you know what happened? A little.

Does the Defeat screen absolutely need to be as function focused as it is on making sure you understand you lose?
No. But it isn’t as egregiously negative as some people seem to portray it.

Now that I think about it, the word “defeat” is an interesting choice. In sports when looking at teams records it’s win/loss, not win/defeat. Defeat, in colloquial English, implies that you got owned. If you beat your friend in a close table tennis game by one point you wouldn’t say “I defeated you!” It’s just not how the word is usually used. Like I said, I’m not sensitive enough to care, but I can see why some people feel the “defeat” announcement is a little obnoxious.

I feel like defeat is more mild, myself. The screen should just flash “LOSER” instead, imo.

Keep your mind in context with the game you are playing; Overwatch.
It’s just a game that is designed to have a winning or losing team.

Do not relate or apply the word “Defeat” to any aspect of your real life.

When I see it, it is just an indication that particular game is over.
Defeat…awww… :disappointed:

My mind...

I wanna play again!!!

It’s not that I cannot see it at all. I think it’s a pretty nitpicky and overly sensitive thing to ask for a change on.

TF2 uses borderline abusive announcements. “YOU FAILED!” and has disparaging minor key depressing losing music. I honestly never heard one peep about it on the forums.

Defeat is just the opposite of Victory. That’s all there is to that. If someone wants to read super far into it and get raw about the word choice I’m thinking they probably just have an issue with any sort of negative feedback at all.

I’m not ignorant as to the context of the request, I’m asking questions for clarification as to what I already suspect, which is that people are asking for absolute kid gloves when informing them they didn’t win the video game.

Back in the day, when you failed at teh gaem of video, you needed to cough up them dolla dolla bills y’all. No, not in-game currency. Real cold hard cash money!

Personally, I prefer not doing that. The screen could flash, “kys” and I would feel less despair as I did when I needed to go find some fallen quarters because my mom said “last one.”

When I lose, I want it to say “GG next” instead :smirk:

Good. I don’t wanna get suspended for mentioning a certain Afro-Cuban percussion instrument…
