I tracked my last 100 map votes….yup

Tracked my most recent 100 matches for science

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1XV0sSSLwydrabFd_9CNOIjeQMja_kgahBEcK8QRBzoU/edit?usp=sharing

I also tracked my first 50 however this time i didnt vote at all. i wanted to show how the map voting affects what gets played without me trying to influence it

theres three sheets (the last one being overall data). first tab is first 50 and the other tab is the second 50. I split it just to see if there was any change over time or in case any obvious changes were made by blizz that might affect the numbers (nope). theres also a line at the end of the first week when Aatlis got its own game mode (i was curious if it would be pushed less - it wasnt)

My thoughts after doing this for basically entire season up until now (and theres some notes in the final sheet that speak to this as well):

I HATE it

i get that people want to influence what they get to play, but in reality what is happening is that this system is just deleting most of the games variety/content. If not for blizz’s foresight in not just making it top vote automatically wins this game would absolutely be an escort the payload simulator.

but its not like its far off anyway. almost 2/3rds of my matches were payload escorts, with the h/e maps getting the top vote >80% of the time, and the only reason that number isnt higher is because sometimes theres more than one h/e option. the non-h/e maps often go with 0 votes, Of the 40ish non-h/e maps selected HALF were because there wasnt a h/e option

Some maps dont even see the light of day, and im not even talking about the “dreaded” flash or clash maps. Busan with 10 appearances but only seen once and that was because there was no h/e map available, Antarctic Peninsula not once, Oasis not once. Control in general showing up 75 times and being selected a paltry 20 times. how often do you hear people complaining about control maps? never, theyre just getting diffed by the almighty h/e maps

other things:

i mention it in last page, but something else that is now happening and i think im pretty confident i can blame this squarely on map voting. since they added leaver penalties i have backfilled into matches a grand total of ONE time. Thats over a year of playing with only 1 backfill. this season? 5 already. why? ill bet a good amount its people complaining about map selection

why is 2cp not in map voting? surely it cannot do worse than some of the available modes. its apparantly ok if a map get votes anyway so its not like it would matter

What i would like to see:

at bare minimum? blind voting - too often do you see votes fluctuate at last second (people literally seem afraid to vote for some things)

the preferred option? just go back to random voting. i want to play OW. Not this filtered corner of it

I like that flashpoint and push aren’t beimg ignored!

now this is what i want for blizzard to do. i would vote for them all the time. i wonder if they would be popular, more than any other maybe besides hybrid, escort probably

Another trend I noticed that I didn’t point out was that older/OW1 maps tend to get picked over new ones even within the same type of map

And what’s more older/OW1 than 2 cp

Yup - just what I said would happen at launch of this bad idea and was poo-poo’d by short-sighted forumites thinking that there couldn’t possibly be any down side.

Map choice is dumb, restricts variety and just causes more delay before we start playing.

My preference is to do away with map voting, and allow us to choose the maps we want to opt in to. I would think it would add an extra min of wait time to find a game, but it would be a better use of our time by not having to deal with backfills as much, as people would be playing the maps they want to play.

I think they’ll add it, people will see that its voted for frequently, and that’ll blow a hole in the “no one likes it” narrative. I’ve said it before, but my Assault games were always populated. Sometimes they were over fast, but I never had mass leavers.

Yup it was a dumb move to add map voting in qp saw this coming from a mile away. Really kills the game for me, having to play the same 5 maps and weirdly always on defense

today I have noticed that new trashpoint map’s artificial boost as third option has been replaced by the other trashpoint maps

they are there every single time, whereas before it was always analtis (whatever its called)

Because it’s bad

I love map voting. Its the best thing they added in ow since role queue.

I’m sorry but i dont enjoy getting koth/push or fp for 70~80% of my matches for literal years. I rather have payloads/hybird and from time to time koth/phs/fp that ppl vote for. Its way more balanced this way for me.

Oh no you have to deal with such a thing for the first time in your life and its such a big deal. Imagine how it is for ppl like myself getting “bad maps” for literal years on end.

Fun > Variety

Quality > Quantity

The maps are just garbage.

Same

I used to get excited seeing Kings Row before map voting was implemented, cause it was so rare.
Now I don’t wanna see it again unless it’s the xmas version of it (best map ever cause of the nostalgia from the first winter wonderland event in ow1)

I don’t even understand what people have against push or fp maps?
Majority just jumps on the bandwagon and shuts of their brains and vote escort or hybrid.

That’s some data dedication. I am also very disappointed that the community has been allowed to effectively eliminate the majority of maps. The maps and mode they like aren’t better than the others. There’s no problem with the others; they’re just on the wrong side of prevailing sentiment.

OW is the only game I’ve ever played where like every map. It’s a shame we’re missing out on so many of them. And if the devs keep listening to the community and just design more of the one mode they say they like, they’ll make themselves bored of their own game and still somehow blame the devs for it.

And strong yes to putting 2CP back in the map pool.

Also, maybe map voting should be its own arcade mode instead of in the main modes. I’m normally against splitting the player base, but the only people we’d lose are people who don’t want to play OW anyway. They can just play carefully-crafted diet OW in their arcade corner. People who only like one mode aren’t the kind of people who have the capacity for strategy and team play anyway. By isolating them everyone wins.

Devils advocate, if I log on to play a few matches with the bro’s a few matches every night. I want to play my favs, not play variety for the sake of it.

System is working as intended, if people wanted variety, they would vote variety, but they choose the same maps, and the same heroes every time because that’s what they enjoy.

To me it seems that familiarity is important. That explains why the oldest modes are voted the most and why “New Queen Street” is the most “popular” Push map.

I just dont like multi round gamemodes, takes time, encourages counter swapping and all around just unfun.

What’s going on with push. The worst map is the most popular and the best map is the least popular?

Precisely. The more garbage maps they release, the more diluted with garbage the map pool gets.

There is a reason players prefer the OW1 maps, they are the best ones.
