I got to GM as (almost) a monkey otp. And what I’ve learnt

I’d like to see Winston return. He’s particularly fun to play (I love Orisa but can’t stand playing Rein, so Winston is a good go to).

Monkey is my favorite tank, it’s nice to know he can be played at the highest levels without requiring a swap.

I can usually play around a single counter like reaper, but add a hog and I have to swap to not feed.

Uhh yeah umm can you switch?

I never reached beyond 3.4k and here’s what I learned:

Athena: select your hero
Me: selects Winston
Teammates: we need a shield

If we’re losing: gg Winston. You are playing $%^&ty tank.

If we win:

i prefer they rework his shield like:

fast cd shield, but low hpshield

like 8-9 sec cd with 500 hp

so it can sync with his jump more

idk…

He’s fine. Winston requires faster gameplay which isn’t going to happen in lower tiers. Unless you’re standing still, your Ana won’t be able to heal you lol.

Winston jumps has its own ways. Like there are too many to write. But in general you can jump and make it a 2s cooldown.

do u think 3s cd jump would be op?

came here to post this

While there is many ways to virtually reduce the cooldown with roof-sliding, longer airtime and such, I wouldn’t say it’s the most practical solution in all situations, it’s not even doable everytime depending on the map.

If you’d ask me a few weeks before, I would have said Winston is fine, he needs no buff. But with how they buffed D.VA Boosters, I wouldn’t be mad if they buff Jump pack too. Not to 3 seconds, because he doesn’t need that much. But 6 or 5 for example.

Yes very much so, it would make him very hard to punish and he would almost be a better ball. Also with the fact that jump gives him the little burst he needs if that time gets halved he would be way too burst imo. Like any time a hero like reaper or cree got to him he can go straight out. Similar to dva rn where she can now get around everywhere and straight back out with ease.

I wanna try him in gold. I always liked playing Winston plus my Aim aint that great. Are there any coaches or guides how to play him you recomend?

I personally never got coaching until I was on that last push to GM but usually I’ve never found youtube videos etc to be that good. Sure they can help you learn general tips and tricks but I’d personally join a discord that offers free coaching. Hell I’m in one rn I could invite you if you like.

You got me to laugh. :face_with_hand_over_mouth:

I’m gonna play your psychology card again =). A Hammond will devastate your team and then roll away and for awhile it’s like he doesn’t exist. D.Va is just free farm after her DM is down. Winston has staying power thanks to his kit and it’s just hard to look past him when he’s jumping on your team. Winston’s like a white elephant. You just can’t play the game until you get rid of the Winston on your screen first. Just my opinion. =)

I don’t necessarily agree with the buffs since i find monkey one of the most balanced heroes in the game and i don’t want him to become another dps tank. Nevertheless a very interesting read especially considering it’s from someone who reached GM and clearly knows what he’s doing.

Winston has the best voice lines

Oh 100%. I can’t tell you how much I spam the “excuse me” voice line. Gotta win the mental warfare as I zap the enemies to death.

Hi Jet! <3

What would you say are probably the easiest/hardest comps to beat in doing this? Referring primarily to Tanklines, but, it can be an entire comp you may have encountered.

Yes I could’ve asked you this over Discord, but why would I do that??

EDIT: Also, what was your preferred second Tank for when you went Monkey?

Hey Isen! <3

Ok so many different comps can be annoying however worst of all is if it includes cree and hanzo. They are horrible to play against, poke me before I can even get in and if I try to engage and mess up my shields it’s gg go next. Brig can be very annoying also because the armor can make my damage almost negligible. Moira should theoretically be hard for me however a badly played one is much easier to kill than even an Ana. Zen can also cause problems if he is aware, some poke me down any time they see me. It makes it so I can almost never engage on them. Other than that Reaper, hog and doom can sometimes cause problems but usually handle-able if I actually use my brain xd.

To do with tanklines is interesting, sometimes some tanks are ok but sometimes they ruin me. Dva for example, she is a good peeler however doesn’t usually damage me enough to force me not to engage. Her boop however is very frustrating, some high grounds I use are very thin and easy to fall off (e.g statue on KR, or bridge on Gibraltar). If they boop me off and I’m not prepared (or at least my supports) I will probably feed. Hog can also be frustrating since most of them chase you everywhere and theres almost no way I can kill them (e.g against reaper I can sometimes win a 1v1 with a shield). Reins are very interesting to fight, some do nothing as I build ult charge off them and their team and just carry on pressing w, others decide to randomly charge me (when im in the backline) leaving their frontline exposed, sometimes they catch me ngl but if my team is smart sometimes they can engage on the “broken” frontline. Most frustrating is ball and kinda orisa, orisa mainly for the halt but the CC off ball is just pepega-similar to dva. The slam however just completely cancels me MID JUMP, it tilts me very much haha. Sigma is a usually win in the 1v1 but I usually have to invest shield, the rest are ok.

Usually it depends on the enemy comps however generally I like the zarya, dva and sometimes ball. Though I don’t usually care what they go since I play a very solo monkey or maybe opportunist you can call it? I generally go for out of position targets, targets which my team mate is 1v1 or a safe opportunity to make space and build ult charge. However I love playing with a decent rein, a lot of the time I can make 2-4 enemies focusing me in the back line while the enemy front line (usually rein) is going without any support, as you probably know a lone rein is almost powerless. If my rein is smart enough, a lot of the time they can push and run over the front line and by that time I can jump back or keep engaging with my team and it’s an easy clean up (so easy to win team fights like this if everyone plays it right).
