I agree with this with the exception of the late night comment. My experience has been the exact opposite where I have what feel like newer/placement match players and leavers during peak play hours and better odds at night.
I don’t know.
I used to feel this way, but I was just at a skill plateau.
My stats bear it out too. 1/1 fb/death, low elims and damage, high-ish healing… And I was convinced the game was screwing me with terrible teammates.
But over the course of a couple weeks a while ago, something ‘clicked’. My fb/death approached 2/1, elim/death was insanely good. Average healing went down slightly, average damage and elims skyrocketed.
Then, guess what?
I started winning a lot, and jumped an entire division and have been holding it all season at 60% win rate. My stats are back down, because I’m playing with people who are as good or better than me, but they’re balanced between healing and damage. Plenty of elims.
So if you feel like you have no agency on support it’s because you don’t. You’re not good enough to make a difference, you can only hope the MM gives you opponents that are worse. Can’t climb that way, and can’t expect to win that way.
As a support/dps player, I’d suggest learning how to kill things WHILE AT THE SAME TIME not allowing teammates to die. You need to become a lethal member of your team. You need to, as a support, see a lone Soldier and think ‘imma go ice that grandpa’ and actually, consistently do it.
Then you’ll win and climb.
Whether you like it or not, how you perform does matter. You are a comstant factor in every game you play and your rank will reflect that given enough games.
You’ll win and you’ll climb, as long as your backpack is big enough for the burden around you.
You have no say in preventing a Dva from force feeding herself to a Zarya and refusing to switch, or getting a 2 and 12 Venture to stop flinging themselves in fights they’ll never win, or getting your team to stop doing random 1v1 battles anywhere but the point.
You have no agency to win the game alone on support, no matter how great of a game you play, if you can’t make up for whatever the other teammates aren’t doing.
except that this worst case scenario that you described isn’t all that common.
‘agency’ isn’t being able to hard-carry 1v5 every lobby. some percentage of games you will win regardless of what you do, some games you will lose regardless of what you do.
agency comes with your skill being great enough that in any match that could go either way, it’s really likely to go to you because it’s also really likely that you’re the best player in the lobby.
and that’s when and only when you SHOULD be ranking up quickly. In the case that you are almost always the best player in the lobby. otherwise why would the game prioritize getting you to a new division or rank?
It’s basically story of all team-based games I ever tried - game gives me idiots as teammates and expects me to beat pre-made stack as enemies.
It doesn’t. If give you randoms.
Occasionally they turn out to be having a bad game, sometimes they pop off. But you’ll be the same to them.
Never. And they are idiots, since they seek to die.
Last straw was PvP mode in one Korean MMO. When you have more damage dealt to enemies, than your team combined(it’s 3v3). Teammates running away from team to be ganged by entire enemy team is regular occurence.
Worst part is, I am not even dedicated PvP player in that game.
Oh. Stats. Ok.
Not really interested in out of context stats. I’ve literally won a game doing zero, just sat on the payload.
But back to the point. It doesn’t give you “idiots”. It gives you players. If those players make “idiotic” choices that is on them, not the game.
And people will be making the same complaints about you, far more often than you realised. You don’t play perfectly every game (or ever), and until you do, you aren’t really in a position to complain about what others do.
It does. It basically demands me to solo entire enemy team, if I want to win. Unsurprisingly, it doesn’t work out.
It’s not on them, because such players exist in any game.
I am in position to complain about it, because unlike them I am not eager to die. And to be specific - that PvP mode doesn’t have respawns, so if you die, you stay dead, until next round.
Exactly. You can’t win every game. And if you just sit their claiming everyone is the “idiot”, then you’re just wasting your time and never going to achieve anything.
I won’t achieve anything anyway, when such players are given to me as teammates. Especially when I am not even dedicated PvP player in that MMO, yet have to face pre-made stacks of 3 players from PvP guilds.
Team mates don’t stop you climbing.
They absolutely do. Got no time to waste in games, that “were rigged from the start”.
If developers think me dumb enough to not see hopeless case, jokes on them.
I think you need to look in the mirror more when you question the intelligence of your teammates.
Team mates do not stop you climbing. If you have the skill, you’ll always get to where you belong.
I won’t, since I am just 1 player. And I am not eager to grind.
Counter-Strike 2 had similar situations. And gunning down all 5 enemies is unlikely to happen, unless all 5 have brain damage to run into your Negev spray together.
So every account I’ve had, playing solo, climbed to roughly the same peak… Doesn’t matter who I play with. Some games are terrible some are terrible for the enemy. Just the way PvP games go.
Team mates don’t stop you climbing. They might ruin a match, but you’re the one in every game. You’ll have ruined enough matches yourself without paying attention to it. The wrong position, the wrong hero selection, performing badly, not paying attention. Many times over your team mates will thing your as much of an “idiot” as you think they are.
Except you said “rigged”, so you might be worse.
I didn’t ruin anything, so you can forget trying to shift blame on me. And teammates eager to ruin matches are in hundreds, if not thousands.
Even back in Team Fortress 2, I learnt simple lesson - teammates are idiots, and unless you can manipulate them to, at least, run towards same place together, you got no chances.
The total lack of awareness. You’re not a perfect player. No one is. We all ruin games, we have all been the reason a game was lost.
But you’re the only reason you can’t climb.
(But I’m getting the feeling you might be trolling)
Yes, you are. You refuse to see reality.
Unfortunately, in most games you got no tools to manipulate idiots into doing useful things.
