I’m also not saying that Overwatch is overall cringe, but the latest marketing for overwatch 2 is beyond cringe and is driving adults away.
Compare how Ow1 trailer doesn’t take itself so seriously to Ow2 that takes itself way to seriously
I personally don’t feel they’ve changed the tone or style of writing for the OW2 short. It’s always been kinda cheesey heroic, which has been fine for something with the tagline “the world could always use more heroes”
They just got a new writer as well I believe?
I just don’t agree that the story is too “cringe”. Same feel it’s always had… Superheroes and Supervillains.
I’m 41, and I liked the OW2 trailer. I took it for what it is. I found nothing really all that cringy about it, it’s supposed to show off the personalities of each hero involved so of course it’s a little exaggerated.
A cinematic short like Dragons though is actually showing lore of the characters. If you want someone to get into something you gotta show them what deep lore there is, because the OW2 cinematic is more of a promo/introductory thing. I mean think about how many times you see Army commericals on TV those are pretty over the top too.
The Reinhardt short is also a really good one. You gotta think about what actually appeals to people when you want to them to get into something. Show them the actual story that exists, not the live-action (well, CG) promotional poster.
Honestly, I don’t understand what kind of immersion they’re trying to get from a game where you just go in and try and fulfill objectives. Unless they’re trying to get into roleplay in OW, immersion isn’t necessary in my opinion. And why even judge a game based on its sequel’s cinematic? You’re generally not going to even see that in the game, especially as it is now since this is not OW2.
And if they watched other stuff, it’s interesting that the sequel cinematic would give them the impression that this is a children’s game.
I’m guessing you’re trying to draw them in with the story though if what you’re showing them are some of the more story-related things? Otherwise I would suggest watching streamers instead. While the story is there, we all know it’s been lacking. The real chunk of the game is going to be the gameplay. Other suggestion would be to show some of the comics if they wanted to get more feel of the story. Otherwise I’m not sure.
I’m not even a fan of this one. Too much tearjerking.
Tearjerking via music vs earning them tears.
Can you blame them though?
I’ve tried with the first gameplay trailers. They watched the new stuff on their own accord. And now I’m just extra mad at Zero hour. You know how it is, you send people stuff but they say they’ll watch it and then watch what they please related to it… -.-
Technically no, can’t really blame them for that. They will think what they want to and of course they are entitled to their own opinions. For me it’s a different process though, so I just find it different is all.
I’m sorry. At least you can get your friends interested enough to look for stuff on their own. My friend straight up just say no without even looking at anything. :') But keep trying if you want. There really is no hurt in playing something during a free weekend at least so keep encouraging them to give it a shot.
I dont know where you get this part and probably this misunderstanding is why you dont get it.
Overwatch is NOT new player friendly. Like not at all, like it doesnt educate players properly and its not easy to learn at all. In fact the learning curve is one of the biggest problems: You find players level 700+ that still dont know why they lose/win games.
Had a friend who had a similar thought (and add on that they thought it was “just a TF2 clone”) until I bought it for him. He doesn’t play it a lot (mainly cause he’s low level and hates the lack of teamwork in low level play) but really enjoys the game.
Now ya can’t buy it for all of them, but maybe you can get one or two of them a copy. They have an open mind about it and play it a while, then they can tell the others it isn’t too bad and they buy it…
The bright, vibrant, unique art style and compelling characters are what made Overwatch the sensation it is. It is easy to forget several years in, but Overwatch was lightning in a bottle – something that many have tried to duplicate afterwards and failed. It wasn’t trying to be gritty, bloody, “realistic”, or “mature”.
If the OP’s alleged friends aren’t about this, then that’s fine. Not every game is for every person. But turning Overwatch into something that it isn’t won’t help serve positive ends.
I absolutely agree with this. What don’t I understand?
I’m saying that this game that is arguably one of the most fast paced, gamesense/mechanics skill heavy game out there and it’s being marketed directly to “toddlers”. They are not even compromising. Like, I’d call the first gameplay trailers and trailer directed at all ages. But Zero hour and Ow 2 gameplay trailer for kids exclusively.
