I think you have to faff about for a while and go there indirectly, or it is offended or something.

I can still reproduce this. It’s been happening for weeks, possibly months.
If the first thing I do when I start up OW is go to career profile → history, the bottom 3/4 of the screen will be grey-ish and the buttons on the left side of the screen are disabled. After about a minute, I’ll get a login screen with this text in big, red letters:
Lost connection to game server
The login details will be blank, but if I just re–start OW I can get back in without typing in my credentials again.
But if I faff about, looking in different menus for a while, I can then go to career profile and see my recent history without issue. I probably should have been clearer on that in my OP.
with how broken the game is they are better off shutting it down
