In the most basic understanding, where “climbing” mean getting a shinier badge on your Career Profile, yes. However it only applies to a specific portion of a portion of the population – to wit, those hardcore, dedicated OW players who can leverage the game specific part of their skill set to propell them past those who have not yet gained parity.
Wait really? If you take an actual hard stuck bronze account and climb it to GM I’d love to see it. Everyone does unranked to GM which is ez when there’s no MMR on your account. It’s far more difficult to take a hard stuck bronze account to GM cause MMR is trash and will take forever till it thinks you should actually be GM.
I have a funny story regarding stacks. I was playing Mei and our stack was a Lucio Soldier Dva.
We were defending numbani and our tank was sitting low ground in choke (lol, double lol because they were on DVA). Anyway I was begging them to come up and help defend the high ground. The soldier proceeds to flame me. I then call him trash (he was like 6-10 or something stupid in like 8 minutes). Lucio hops on mic and says why are you calling him trash, you’ve died 10 times in 8 minutes.
He was describing his friend. I laughed and said no, I have 1 death and 16 elims, that would be your sh/t friend that your playing with.
Match ended, we lost and they all screamed MEI DIFF in text chat.
But yeah I have like a 90% loss rate when I get large stacks. Alternatively, I find games with less stacks the most easily won. Sometimes a duo is fine, although support duos are always terrible for some reason too.
Because some people don’t have friends that play overwatch so they can’t bypass the atrocious matchmaking with grouping. I’m a 3k hour overwatch player and ranked has never felt more random than it does now. Plenty of top 500 streamers are talking about it too and I’ve seen many of them go on bigger loss streaks now than in their whole careers because OW2 gives you at least twice as many unwinnable games than OW1 did. It’s so ez to predict too. I call it out almost every game. Get two players on your team with default ow icons? New players gg.
Even blizzard knows its bad. S5 patch notes says they’re going to reduce the skill gaps in ranked matchmaking.

Lol I had the same when I played on multiple accounts in OW1. The ranked system has always been terrible. It’s all about the MMR bots opinion of where you should be. Here’s my analysis on how the ranked system works if you’re interested Matchmaker REVEALED blizzard secrets EXPOSED =O
I think one of the dumbest things about overwatch ranked system is that’s it’s a system that’s always saying you belong lower or higher. In games with good ranked systems like valorant, LoL, or even Apex now, my rank moves slowly up or down because the reality is when you’re at a rank you belong your skill isn’t fluctuating in large amounts. But in overwatch you’re always moving massive amounts up or down. It’s stupid…and how anyone can actually think it’s an accurate ranked system is beyond me.
The worst example I have of this was back when ball first launched. I dropped from mid diamond all the way down to silver. The game just kept giving me awful players trolls and throwers as team mates (see losers queue I talk about in my ranked analysis) just unwinnable games back to back all the way to silver lol. It got to the point where I was just laughing out loud at how stupid this ranked system is. So once I hit silver, games finally became so ez that I could hard carry even the worst team mates. I kid you not, I one tricked ball back to diamond with an 85% win rate. Everyone was reporting me and calling me a smurf and I’m just like “no sorry just blizzards garbage ranked system thought it should demote me to silver lol”.
OW2 just made it all worse with how much worse the matchmaking is. My rank was up and down all over the place. OW2 gives far more unwinnable games than OW1 ever did. Us solo queuers get the worst of it and I’m finding OW2 just a complete waste of time as a solo queuer. I quit the game a while ago and moved to Apex. It’s sad that a battle royale now has a better competitive system with 60 player matches than overwatch with 10 player matches.
OW2 S5 patch notes has stuff in there about improving matchmaking so I’ll probably make a return an see how it goes. Keeping my expectations low though.
I just find it weird that in other games I will always reach my rank, whilst in OW I feel if I don’t reach it fast enough I will never reach it.
Apex I’ve for the most part enjoyed the matchmaker (except for when they catered it to preds a while back so we were all just fodder). Unlike Overwatch I can actually climb in Apex regardless of my teammates because it actually rewards individual contribution (i’ve gotten so used to having bad duos in comp that now I can usually 3v1 lol)
