I don’t think OWL is to blame for this.
This is not an accurate comparison. The reason the NFL doesn’t let people go in right after high school is two fold, and education doesn’t enter into the equation. First, it was an agreement with the NCAA to not gut college football profits; this motive doesn’t exist in esports. Second, American football is a sport based on physical skill and output. There is a big difference between the physical capabilities of 18 year olds vs 21-22 year olds even among elite athletes.
No, we don’t all know about the Sinatraa situation but the headline said OWL suspended him for sexually assaulting and raping his girlfriend or something like that.
Sorry but you cannot fault someones parents for everything.
It also goes by the people they hang around with at school etc, which parents have no control over outside of the house.
My sister as a teenager ended up around the wrong type of people and she smoked (not at home of course) and did other things she shouldn’t have at that age and sometimes didn’t even come home until early hours of the morning, my mother would be worried sick about her. My mom has 7 children including myself and she raised us all very well and respectful, my sister now as an adult she is a very responsible and nice person, but as a teenager she was unruly for many years, this is no fault of my parents.
you also can’t blame a parent for their child not going to university/colleague, not even in poorer families, because education is AVAILABLE for all AGES your chance for further education doesn’t just “END” the moment you leave school, I have a friend who went to university in his 30’s and became a Teacher… he actually uses these forums a bunch lol.
While I don’t think OWL is responsible for who Sinatraa is as a person or the things that he’s done.
I think you do bring up a good point regardless about mental health support in eSports and the OWL. And how young people are joining these types of things without any help or support that they might need.
I’m not entirely educated here so I’m sure someone could correct me, but is there actually any help in this matter in OWL or eSports in general?
Actually at my college, they do teach guys about consent as part of orientation. And you’d be surprised what some of them didn’t know because in their head rape is something that happens only in dark alleys. They don’t think about how drinking alcohol could lead to a nonconsenting encouter or how someone could withdraw consent or things of that nature.
Withdrawal of consent needing to be respected is actually one of the biggest lessons they emphasize and one of the ones they’re least likely to hear from home.
This doesn’t excuse any of Sinaatra’s actions by any means. But if they are gonna pull these guys out of school, they could and should be giving them mental health help and lessons to help them navigate the situations they are likely to find themselves in as e-athletes.
you can be the best parents in the world and have a psycopath kid.
Have to agree here. OWL is only as responsible if they covered for him or enabled him in anyway. I see no way that they did.
Yes, this is true - you must be a parent yourself. There’s a show on ID Network called “Killer Kids” that commit patricide.
well Blizzard and Overwatch League are not responsible for Sinatra’s actions
they might get slightly hit for it but judging from the fact their refunding the zarya skin their taking the right precautions seperating themself from him
I personally think in any situation you should hear both sides of the story
however the evidence against him is HUGE there is no denying that
Maybe OWL promotes systemic misogyny? I don’t know but does anyone? This hasn’t been studied yet.
That only works up to a certain point, though. If he didn’t have a previous history of this type of behavior, a deeper OWL background check would not have turned up anything nor prevented him from getting into all the money and position of power.
I say “position of power” because from what I read, the ex-girlfriend admitted that she tolerated it far longer than she should have because she was a serious OWL fan and kept telling herself to just deal with it because he was an OWL player. And I seriously doubt he didn’t know she was such a fangirl when they met.
Internet culture is interesting. Now you’re blaming Blizzard or OWL for some individual’s action?
What about the entire crime scene in your area or city then? As part of it, don’t you have responsibility for the people who are committing them? We should hold you as guilty as well because you’re part of society as well.
If you think the ‘minimum’ education is going to make you a decent human being, I’m sorry to break the bubble but I’ve scene more people who are educated yet hungry for more. Educational institutions won’t make you a decent person or give you morality.
Apart from that, do you know how many of the ‘educated athletes’ become broke shortly after they retire? So much for education.
As for these sexual allegations? How about something to ponder? Why is it that current generations of teenagers stalk people who have some form of legitimacy over social media? There’s a fundamental problem with the society where you’re giving 13 year olds access to everything and wondering why they’re messed up in the head.
I don’t think that any of his employers, past or present, are responsible for his behavior. It seems like they’ve taken the appropriate action.
Depends who you ask. Systemic racism is jailing the majority of the black population according to some people.
I’m just asking the questions. Even if I had real solutions (otherwise known as opinions), would it change anything?
His parents are more responsible than OWL is.
Look at Lindsey Lohan, do you blame Hollywood for the train wreck mess she turned into, or her gold digging mother?
Never blamed blizzard or looking for a scapegoat.
More asking a question about how detrimental the esport is to young players and should blizzard make an effort to make sure the 13-16 that are in there contenders system aren’t ruining there lives mentally or educationally. Also considering how intense mentally it is being on a team at the highest levels of the game is.
And yes it doesn’t have to it only needs to function within the law and this is fine but if blizzard want to say it’s a progressive company. Without trying to help the players that keep its esport alive then IMO it’s not.
He isn’t in OWL any more, his Valorant team suspended him pending further investigation, but this did happend during his time in OWL.
Unless blizzard outright knows something is going on, at the time the player is in their league, then they are not at fault, or responsible for anything.
Is the NFL responsible for OJ Simpson?
Perhaps brain damage from concussions? It is refreshing that people still endorse personal responsibility although a lot of people were blaming his parents in this thread.
