My enthusiasm died. It was killed by rock, paper, scissors, horse. How long do you think before a dev even acknowledges the thing we all know is killing this game? We gotta wait for a streamer to make a rant video I guess?
Actually, to be fair, rock paper scissors is harder than what we got. Which is rock, paper, scissors with do-overs. I see you chose scissors so I swap from paper to rock. How is that skill?
Well, I did just write a 4000 character concise thesis yesterday on how âBalanceâ doesnât mean what most people think it means.
Which includes Pros and Streamers.
But the TLDR, is that an overfocus on Quantitative issues, is kinda incoherent when what people mean is Qualitative issues. But they are using the wrong terminology.
There will always be rock paper scissors, because heroes are unique, if they curb rock paper scissors it will be the start of making all heroes the same which will be lameâŚ
Counterpicking has always existed in overwatch because the entire game was based around swapping heroes.
A core mechanic of the game cant ââkill the gameââ. Hero diversity and variety is the lifeblood of this game.
If anything, its obstinate one tricking what is killing the game. Almost every single bad change in this game has been with the intent to make X hero be more acceptable to deal for some popular heroes like Rein, Soldier and Tracer, whose players usually have self inflicted shallow hero pools they can play and complain the moment something counters their one trick.
it is a mechanic in ow blah blah , we just want it to be less of a crap show on tanks ffs.
Itâs not fair that I can go 100 hours on kiriko non stop, but no more than 2(1) fight(s) on d.va before my team mental is desintegrating.
My take: Right now they are in full hype mode with the current collab, and wonât let up or worry about any distractions (Rock-Paper-Scissors is a distraction) until it ends. When it does end, theyâll probably make a statement regarding how pleased they were about the collab and what they learned this time to help make it easier to sell even more next time. (lol)
Then? Hard to say. Weâre basically in November now. The holidays. Which means theyâre going to be wrapping up the year, Bobby K is tidying up to step down, and then all are going on their usual winter break. The Winter Wonderland event will run essentially hands off, by a skeleton crew, as it usually does. It wonât be until mid or late January (I think?) when they come back to work. At that point, itâs under new management, so that means new adjustments internally being made before plans on where to go next or make more PR statements come out.
In short: maybe by March theyâll address it at the earliest? Thatâs assuming they even want to address it over some other, easier to fix, less consequential, less polarizing issue.
Campaign for 6v6 then. Or for defense DPS heroes to be restored to what they were so they can aid tanks.
You cant escape hero diversity and the counterpicking that is borne from it. OW was based on it. Its basically the core of the game.
The only other solution possible would be to delete every single tank and enforce Reinhardt mirrors every single game. No Dva to get countered, problem solved.
I donât see how anyone expects this to be fixed realistically.
Supports donât have to swap as often because their entire gameplay style revolves around avoiding the fight as much as possible while still doing their job. Thatâs always going to be a lot easier to do than throwing yourself at the enemy and intentionally making yourself a a target â which is what Tanks have to do.
I mean supports can still get counterpicked, and hard.
The difference is that even if the Zen in your team is getting farmed and doesnt want to swap, you can still go Brig or Lucio and peel the flankers off him.
With tank⌠your team cant do anything if they get stuck with a suicidal rein main, or a sniper dva. And as a tank you are basically enforced into playing the counterpick game or lose.
Yeah, thatâs why I specified âavoiding the fight while still doing their jobâ. Countering a Support means making one of those two things not true, and itâs a different answer for every Support. When people are talking about Tank RPS, theyâre talking about characters like Mei, Bastion, Ana, Zen, Orisa and Zarya who essentially make a Tankâs life hell no matter which Tank it is.
Supports donât have such a universal counter because every Support does their job completely differently. You can go Winston to block off Anaâs healing and grenades, but that wonât work against Brig or Lucio.
People who are complaining about Supports being too strong essentially want there to be a character they pick where pretty much every Support can be ignored or outright deleted.
I mean, I can see why a lot of people consider Tank âunfunâ to play. In fact, Flats accidentally said the quiet part out loud recently when he said âPlaying Tank in 2023 is like playing Support in OW1â, which he specified as âYou donât make the play â you enable someone else on your team to make the playâ.
That statement was very telling to me. Tank players essentially see themselves as the âmain characterâ of the team (again, another thing the Tank players â including, again, Flats said in the SVB âGreat Tank Debateâ podcast). They donât want to play a role that involves enabling the team; OW Tank Players arenât likeâŚsayâŚMMO Tank Players where they just sit there and use cooldowns to not die while the DPS do all the cool flashy attacks/spells. OW Tank players do not enjoy the function of âmaking spaceâ unless you specifically define that function as âbeating the enemy team to deathâ.
Never. If they were going to they would have said something by now. They donât care if tank is not fun to play because we have 5v5 and donât need many tank players for it to work.
Also because fixing it would require a lot of work (making tank the hardest role to counter in the game) and they are lazy devs.
Me, a Paladin and Dark Knight player in FFXIV: what?
This doesnt really apply to 99% of the playerbase. And Flats is an extremely biased dude that hates anything that counters Reinhardt on principle. His takes are often entirely from the viewpoint of Reinhardt one tricking and nothing else. He put Roadhog in high tier because he hates him and he kinda counters Rein.
Influencers are not trusthworthy of having good opinions.
