How does MMR or Placements work?

I know how it usually works for accounts that have already been placed in a rank but how does the game decide MMR before Lvl 25? do they judge your individual role stats on qp and arcade? or is everyone automatically placed in plat/gold and work from there? Im just curious to see how a new player would be placed in this age of overwatch

Not really, every player starts with a base of 2350 SR and quickly fluctuates based on the performance of their initial 50 or so matches. More details can be found in this handy guide:
