How do you define high and low skill heroes in the game

There’s a subtle point about the difficulty ratings: They’re specifically meant for beginners. That means they’re more based on skill floor than skill ceiling, they penalize a hero’s complexity more than their difficulty, and they take into account the amount of game knowledge you need to be good with a hero.

For example:

  • Orisa is in many ways an easier tank to play than Reinhardt, but for someone brand new to the game, Reinhardt presents one decision (Shield or fight?) while Orisa presents many (Where do I place the shield? Who do I shoot? What’s this “Fortify” thing? Wait, where did my shield go?).
  • Pharah is a little bit difficult to play well because you have to stay aloft and shoot at the same time—but actually, for a beginner, you don’t have to stay aloft and shoot at the same time, so she’s a one-star.
  • Torbjorn and Symmetra are usually considered “low skill”, but placing their turrets requires good map knowledge, so they’re two-stars.
  • Sombra is more difficult than Tracer? Well, yes. Sombra’s player needs detailed knowledge of every hero’s kit so they know what Hack or EMP will disable. Without that, they’ll go “Reaper is such a problem for my team, I’ll just hack him!” and then take a few shotgun blasts to the face.
  • Zenyatta is a three-star? Yeah. Harmony and Discord are such subtle effects that you won’t even notice the difference in a chaotic game full of newbies. They only matter when players start being able to, like, select their targets instead of shooting at whatever happens to pop up in front of them.

Having said that, these ratings are really good at the thing they’re trying to do. And that’s the problem with the question posed by this thread: It’s just not specific enough. Without knowing why you want to know which heroes are low-skill or high-skill, you can’t really give a useful ranking.
