Alternative explanation, that does not run counter to any of the references in this thread.
Please note that while Kaawumba is well spoken and his explanation is absolutely possible, there are still anomalies which are hard to explain in the context of a fair system(most visible in bronze to GM climbs). I am not saying my explanation is absolutely correct, nor that his is false, simply that we do not have enough data to accept either as fact.
