I know it’s a weird question to ask, but I’m seriously confused by this phenomena. Is this hairstyle all the rage in Korea right now or something?
Because it seems like the vast majority of OWL Players all sport this mop-top hairstyle that hasn’t been popular in several decades, or something resembling a bowl-cut which has pretty much always been considered nerdy, or at least that’s how it is in North America.
It’s just so bizarre seeing these kids sporting the same hairstyle which has been distinctively out of style since the 1970s at the latest, yet they’re clearly trying to push these kids as being cool, professional gamers, which their hair just seems at odds with.
Granted, I’m not a young guy anymore in my mid-30s and I’m not really up on the latest styles, but as far as I know, the mop-top hasn’t made a comeback, or at least I haven’t seen anyone wearing it out on the street or on television, so what’s up with it?
Is this some kind of bizarre attempt to create a distinctive image for pro-gamers or is this haircut just extremely popular in Korea right now?
For some reason, the spectacles are far less awkward that the hair, although the combination is pretty funny due to its Harry Potter-esq appearance.
Admittedly, I’ve never been much for fashion trends, nor have I ever liked the idea of having the same exact look as everyone else, (that creeps me out for some reason) so personally if I were on an eSports Team, then I’d actually want to stand out from the other players, to the point that if I saw everyone had the same hairstyle as me, then I would like immediately ruffle it all up or something, then proceed to immediately dye it/restyle it after the match.
Honestly, I don’t know why, but that’s unsettling to me. If I like go somewhere and everyone is dressed exactly the same right down to the hair, it weirds me out. It feels unnatural, I’m just not used to seeing people who all look/dress alike, so I try to watch OWL and keep getting put off by it.
I wish that at least one of those kids would do something different with their hair, don’t care what. Spike it, slick it back, cut it short, grow it long, dye it a crazy color, put it up into a hideous man-bun for all I care, just stop wearing the same hairstyle.
The nail which stands out gets hammered down as the saying goes… American girls with those damn “Beach wave” haircuts are equally as bad… come on girls, it’s time for something new after a decade or so of that.
If you pay attention, fashion is often times unflattering, awkward, and just plain silly, hence the term; “Fashion Victim” being used for those who follow fashion trends too religiously without any real fashion sense of their own.
So yeah, I don’t doubt that mop-tops and bowl-cuts being brought back and labeled as trendy. Yeah, it factually looks terrible, but they’re young men, they want to look cool and handsome, so they follow the latest fashion trends, hit up the nearest barber and say; “I’ll take The Paul McCartney” or “I’ll take the Moe Howard” then walk into a room with their teammates with pride knowing that they’ve got the coolest hairdo, because everyone else in the room has it too.
I want you to look up male kpop stars and check how many have bowl cut or similar to bowl cut hairstyles, it’s been a fashion trend for a while over there
I see. I’m a heterosexual American, ergo my exposure to Male K-Pop musicians is effectively limited to what I’ve seen in LG advertisements and one-off McDonald’s promos.
That being said, I suppose it makes some sense that K-Pop musicians would want to adopt/revive the classic look of The Beatles. Unfortunately, it has spread to the youth, who look less like The Beatles and more like how Justin Bieber did in his adolescence.
I’ve been told it’s cute boy culture that mimics some of their cartoons and kpop. Clearly if the women over in KR didn’t like the look, the men would not do it.
Lets not to be too smug about it. We all know if say Marvel movies some how made mullets the most popular hair style for younger guys in the USA, you would see every college guy rocking a mullet.
Keep in mind, besides it simply being a practical and common hairstyle in KR, a large portion of these guys are super nerds freshly out of high-school (and remember, they have uniforms and a lot more dress-code restrictions than Western schools). The long term players usually end up developing more individual and flattering personal styles over time.
I don’t have to imagine it, I grew up in the 1990s. Mullets were big for a time in the 90s, even I had a variation of one when I was about 10 years old.
Like I said, I get it if it’s just kids chasing trends out of a desire to fit in and be popular, it’s natural at that age.
It’s nothing personal, in fact I will even throw them a bone here by making the following statement; mop-tops and even bowl-cuts are infinitely more stylish than the cringe-worthy abomination that is the man-bun, which is disturbingly popular here in North America.
At least mullets are masculine, unlike man-buns which are the most emasculating hairstyle ever created because it’s literally a female hairstyle (and an unattractive one at that) repurposed for men.
Honestly, what’s next? Hog-Tails, pigtails for men?
