Hot take: Movement inflation killed Lucio

yes preach
Lucio should have the best boops .

Moira, Mercy, and Lifeweaver are main healers.

Ana, Kiriko, Baptiste, and Illari are flex supports.

Zenyatta, Lucio, and Brigitte are off healers.

The main issue with someone like Zenyatta and Lucio right now is that all the flex supportls are just blatantly better picks 100% of the time.

Example being, Why should I pick Zenyatta when I can get the highest single target healing(beam+ pylon is 142.5 hps) and high damage as Illari ?You sort of have the best of both worlds in this scenario.

Lucio is also fairly limited IMO in the teams comps he can fit into, most of the time I’m only picking him when my tank goes Junker Queen or Reinhardt, really is only good for brawl these days tbh.

This is literally better categories

He could be if others change. This was a long rant that ignored the fact that others will change too

Hes my main and yeah hes just not good in a bastion orisa meta but that wont last forever either.

Meh, Lucio is always a product of the meta tanks. When rush is good, Lucio is good. He is barely changed and he is constantly either meta or completely off meta. He is incredibly team comp dependant. If you need speed he is your go to, if you don’t then there is no point to pick him over literally any other support.

Agree on the Boop being pretty garbage nowadays though. Not because Boop is bad, but because dlc supports have better version of it lol. Illari, Brig have much stronger boops. Tank passive makes it pretty underwhelming ability since it’s pretty much ONLY boop. Illari is movement ability on top of displacement, Brig is triggering her inspire with it (+ deals a lot more damage). Lucio boop is pretty outdated. His speedboost isn’t though and always has been the main reason to pick him. The only map where you were thinking about Lucio for the boops ever was Illios:Well xD

I think the OPs real point is that hes been off meta for most of ow2. He was in the JQ comp but that was nerfed pretty fast

Lucio is the the state he is due to OWL. He was such a key character there, they were afraid to give him any significant changes.

Now that the pro scene is up in the air, maybe they’ll finally give him some buffs. Unlikely with “all supports are OP” narrative started by a bunch of content creators dominating the discussion.

Although would be nice if they fixed the map geometry in the new engine so wallride would work properly. And wall climb as well.

Lucio has never really been a bad pick even in suboptimal comps in ranked unless it’s double main support. His duel potential is pretty good and they’ve been throwing him some bones like the amp heal change keeping him alive if he wants to play away from his team outside brawl. He’s still THE brawl support and will always be amazing when teammates actually 3 2 1 run down people.

Honestly a very real angle I had never considered. I still like playing Lúcio sometimes with a good Rein, JQ, or Ram on our team (or even an Orisa, basically any Tank that likes fighting up close is fun with Lúcio), but I can honestly see how he’s fallen off to the wayside. It would be interesting to see him buffed to make his mobilitycrept utility have more oomph (it’d be hilarious if Speed Boost was brought back to OW1 launch strength, but that’s probably not happening), but with powercreep always being a prevailing issue, buffing is a little scary.

I guess they want Lúcio to be more of a peel machine for his other Support, which is fine, I guess - I enjoy the moments of solidarity where I save my Support bro from getting jumped by knocking them away, but I feel like most other supports can do this just as well, if not better. Brig comes to mind here, she excels at backline patrol. Clearly they should cut Boop’s cooldown in half but make it cost ammo again. /j

New map geometry makes wall riding a pain sometimes though, yeah.

Lucio stopped being peel support since Brig release. If you need a bodyguard you pick Brig. The sole reason to pick Lucio is his speed. That’s his only unique feature.

If someone picks Rein, I 110% of the time pick Lucio

I would say hes a pretty poor pick in bastion orisa comps. Not very good with or against them

There are two sets of terms: Main/Flex Support and Main/Off Healer. The first used mainly in high level competitive – i.e., professional or near to it – circles; the second set are layman’s terms used by regular players. Main Supports are Lucio, Brig and Mercy with the rest being Flex. How much healing they do doesn’t affect their grouping, that is the deciding factor for the “healer” categorizations. What sets them apart is that they are pivotal to certain team composions; e.g., it would not be a Rush comp without Lucio. Their pair is whatever works best with the comp/situation, hence Flex Support.

Honestly not every tank needs Steadfast. Rein, Ram, Junker Queen? Yeah sure. Doomfist, Ball, Orisa, Winston, Dva? Absolutely not.

Basically any tank with mobility does NOT need Steadfast (with the exception of Orisa, she can already make herself unmovable on cooldown, she definitely does not need it).

Frankly, he could have dealt with all these insane movement abilities. It’s the fact that he doesn’t have an answer to a tank walking into your backline anymore; can’t boop them and half of them get speed boosts too. Dive tanks are uncounterable for him now, whereas before there was some level of skill involved in peeling, etc.

Essentially, main thing that killed Lucio was Tank power creep, specifically relating to the passive.
