Since a couple of days ago my ping is higher than usual.
It used to be around 130ms now it’s at 170-180ms.
Other games are fine, it’s just Overwatch that suddenly has a higher ping.

Hey there Takeru,
We appreciate you taking the time to run those WinMTR tests! I’m not seeing any wide-spread increase in latency for your ISP nor region, which leads us to suspect that something local to your home network or the routing of your connection to the game server is causing the sudden increase. Can you temporarily test an alternate network such as a mobile hotspot or VPN? This will help us quickly determine whether the issues are network-related.
I disabled my ethernet connection and connected my phone to my pc and enabled USB tethering. My ping in-game was at around 160ms

Thanks for following up with us and for providing these tests! It looks like the increase is happening at the undersea cable nodes. It’s basically already at the 130-150 mark once it reaches the Americas, but it still has to be routed to our servers from there so the end is a bit higher. Since those are necessary to get from A to B there’s not much way around them that wouldn’t cause an even higher latency.

Since any network in the local area will all still have to go through those undersea cables, this means the issue is outside the service provider’s realm of support. They would have to reach out to their peer networks to ensure they are aware of any ongoing issues.
Of course, playing on the Europe servers may also severely reduce latency since they’re located closer to the local client. Though that can mean not being able to play with our overseas friends so it’s mostly a preference which server to play on.
Game region can be changed by clicking the little planet earth icon above the blue play icon.

I’m on console, and this game is literally unplayable 50% of the time due to the servers

Stratttyyy Yeah, not sure what’s going on lately. Can’t speak for console gaming but definitely noticed an increase in ping on PC since the last update.
Judging by some other post I have seen here, I’m not the only one and more people seem to be experiencing it. Sadly, not a lot of them provided more information.
My ping has always been around 130ms when playing on NA servers from Europe (and it still is when playing other games).
Obviously changing server regions to Europe will most likely solve my issue but since I’m playing this game with my girlfriend who lives in the US, it’s something I won’t do. As silly as it may sound, I got used to playing with a 130ms ping and having to play with 180ms now changed the game a lot for me.
I’m guessing it seems to be maybe a bad coincidence that my increase in ping started to occur after the latest update, for now I’ll just have to wait and see whether the issue fixes itself or not.
Well the test showed that the issue is happening on the undersea cable, so it’s probably coincidence. As a US player the lag hasn’t changed at all for me for years, but people only post in tech support when they have a problem. I’d say 95% of the issues for North America players are ISP or ISP routing peer related.
